Anonymous0I was in the Marines, spent a lot of time in the field.
If food and clean water are provided or available at a local store, but there are no modern entertainment amenities, then when you’re in the field you just kind of sit around with your thumb up your ass. Or go for long hikes or dig ditches or something.
If you don’t have food provided, then life becomes immeasurably harder. You pretty much spend every waking minute trying to find something to eat and prepare it for eating. And without refrigeration, food goes bad within a day or two, so the food scramble never stops.
If clean water isn’t plentiful, then that becomes another big consumer of time and energy. It’s not just about drinking water. You also have to clean your own body, your cooking utensils, your clothes, your ass after s~~~ting without toilet paper, etc.
In fact, water would be the big chokehold if society broke down and everyone had to live off the land. There are more than a quarter of a billion people in the US, and the land can’t support even a tiny fraction of that without modern agricultural and livestock techniques. And good sources of clean water are fairly few and far between. Found a good water source? Be prepared to defend it, because everyone and his brother is going to want a piece of it.
To sum up: Yes, it’s easy for a single individual to go off the grid as long as it’s just him. But if it’s a lot of people, forget about it. The land can’t support it. And if you *do* go off the grid, be prepared to spend a lot of time just getting the basics done (food, water, cleaning up).
Alternatively, if you want a simpler life, then just buy a tent, camp out in your back yard, and run an extension cord and cable TV from the house. Frankly, that’s pretty much what most people are thinking about when they talk about going off the grid.
And you want to live without society? Just don’t answer your email and front door.
I’d be doing all kinds of projects on my own. I also plan on making a complete off the grid property in the future. Sure, there would be luxuries like the internet, video games, movies, etc. But, here’s the thing. I don’t NEED THEM. They’re not necessities.
Lol…that’s my point man. If you hated society so much you wanted to leave you’d be gone…instead you are doing what most of us probably plan on doing…limiting our exposure to the aspects of it we don’t like while still enjoying what we do like as much as possible.
The only reason I’m still a part of society to begin with is because it forces me to be a part of it.
And again…the only reason you are part of society is because you apparently really don’t want to run off and go live on your own or you’d do it. Take a trip to the Congo and build your little hut in the middle of the jungle…nobody will come looking for you. What do you want a plot of land in Montana or something where you can feel safe(thanks to the surrounding society lol)? If you really wanted out of society you wouldn’t give a s~~~ where you settled, you’d just go.

Pretty much nailed it. I never understood when people act like living off in the woods foraging for their own food is an easier lifestyle than what the average American is accustomed too. I think a lot of people just equate it to going camping for a weekend when they show up with a cooler full of food, access to a grill, their smart phone, and can make an emergency trip to the store 10 minutes up the road if they forgot something at home. They wouldn’t have any of those things if they were truly unplugged from society out on their own.

For me, the big difference between a modern camping trip and genuinely roughing it is that point where we run out of toilet paper. When the toilet paper runs out, things go downhill real fast. You just can’t get clean. Rashes, hygiene problems, fouled clothing, and so on. That’s when people start saying, “Get me out of here, I’ve had enough.” 🙂
And again…the only reason you are part of society is because you apparently really don’t want to run off and go live on your own or you’d do it.
People who are so dependent on society make these so called fallacious arguments. You’re essentially telling me this:
@beer Lol, you must be dependent on society or otherwise, you’d go live naked in the woods building your mud hut!
Nope, that’s a fallacious argument.
Once you have a Fleshlight real vaginas become worthless.

If you run out of toilet paper, just go find a smooth rock somewhere and wipe your ass with that. And afterwards, you can rinse and wash it off.
No toilet paper needed.
Once you have a Fleshlight real vaginas become worthless.

No sir…what I’m saying is when you say this…
The only reason I don’t end up leaving society completely is because society forces me to be a part of it no matter what I do.
It is simply not true. You aren’t being forced to stay here. If you really want to leave society so bad, you wouldn’t be opposed to leaving the United States for a less civilized part of the world, and the government isn’t going to come get you and force you to come back and work a 9-5 job and pay taxes. The government does not keep you on a leash, and they haven’t started installing tracking devices on everyone yet.
Yes if you want to stay here and you want to benefit from modern infrastructure, technology, medicine, etc, you’ll be forced to participate in society to some degree, and rightfully so as the rest of us certainly don’t want to pay your share.
Right now…yes, you are dependent on society. If you want to build your off the grid house full of modern technologies brought to you by society…you are dependent on society. If you want to claim no dependence on society then yeah…go run off in the woods butt ass naked, because all your manufactured clothes and material were made by society, carrying no tools or technologies that are beyond the capabilities of you to piece together out in the woods when your own hands, and claim independence brother! I’m not saying one would instantly die if they did that…but its kinda silly claiming you are going to use modern technology because you want to, but you don’t need it, and that you are forced into being part of society…yet when given the option to give up modern technology and leave, which is an option you have, you decline and stay. You are dependent upon society to maintain your current standard of living.
It is simply not true. You aren’t being forced to stay here. If you really want to leave society so bad, you wouldn’t be opposed to leaving the United States for a less civilized part of the world,
But leaving for a part of the world that’s less civilized still means you’re living in a society. You’re still a part of the Congo if you decided to move there.
You are dependent upon society to maintain your current standard of living.
No, I’m not. I’m just enjoying the luxuries of modern day society. I don’t need the internet. I don’t need grocery stores. I don’t need bottled water. I don’t need fast food.
For instance, do you need your Ps4 to have fun and entertainment? As in, are you dependent on it in order to feel any and all enjoyment out of life? What, you don’t? Then why do you use game consoles to get happiness out of life to begin with? Why don’t you just throw it away and play rock, paper scissors, a game where you don’t have to dependent on getting enjoyment from?
And yes, I just committed the same logical fallacy you committed in by arguing that last point about games.
I don’t need society to survive. I can get along just fine without it. But why do I stay? Because I like the entertainment society provides. That’s why.
If I wanted to go around running naked in the Congo, like on Naked Survival, I’d have no problem doing that either. But, I’d still be a part of their society.

So your telling me there isn’t a single place on the face of the planet you could go live like a hermit if you truly wanted to? If you moved to some dirt poor African region and built a hut in the woods the government, if they even have one, would waste resources deporting you?
No, I’m not. I’m just enjoying the luxuries of modern day society. I don’t need the internet. I don’t need grocery stores. I don’t need bottled water. I don’t need fast food.
Yet you use them all. I stand by my statement.
You are dependent upon society to maintain your current standard of living.

Well I can’t exactly play rock paper scissors on my own…and if I was dependent on another person to play with…wouldn’t I be dependent on society for that enjoyment?
I don’t need society to survive. I can get along just fine without it. But why do I stay? Because I like the entertainment society provides. That’s why.
So, your dependent on society to maintain your standard of living lol.

You should try googling a bit…there are plenty of areas in the world you could disappear to and live like a hermit. Do you really think some African territory that can’t even supply its people with food or clean drinking water is going to waste resources giving you s~~~ if you built a hut out in the woods lol. You won’t though, because you are far too dependent on society to maintain the easy life style you have now.
