I recently had oil change on my five speed manual vehicle. The older owner of shop had to drive it on and off lift rack .. the younger mechanic couldn’t drive a stick shift with manual clutch.
What have we become?
What’s happening in this world?I wouldn’t blame the kid. There’s no reason anymore for the average driver to learn how to drive a stick shift. North American manufacturers quit installing manual transmissions in many vehicles a few years ago. I’m not even sure if you can even get a stick shift in an American car today.
There was a time when the driver had to know to adjust the engine ignition timing advance while on the fly and how to change gears using only foot pedals. I doubt many people know how to do that anymore either…

How the f~~~ are you a mechanic if you can’t adjust a CLUTCH? What is he going to do, get his OBDII reader out and see if the clutch pedal throws a code?
Why do you think so many men are overworked when working as a nurse with women. They are the only ones that can do the job of lifting the patients.
Do you really want a guy that only knows how to fix your computer buy just reformatting your hard drive each time you have a computer problem?
This half ass s~~~ does not fly with me. You were there to do a job. No excuses.
This is the same kind of attitude that got women into positions of power.
Tons of cars still have Stickshifts. Just about every Semi truck on the road has one. How the hell did he get is ASE if he can’t DRIVE A STICK.
Did he suck Dicks instead of shifting sticks in schools?
People like this is the reason why Bridges fall, men die on the job site, and guys that worked their asses off get s~~~ pay.
Women want to be lawyers, then get tired of putting in the work.
We got a whole generation of men that are so f~~~ing worthless that women walk all over them. Then go cry rape the second they don’t get their way with us at work for not doing their work for them like “Brad” does.
Enforcing mediocrity is how we got here in the first place!

You are all alone. If you have been falsely accused of RAPE, DV, PLEASE let all men know about the people who did this. http://register-her.net/web/guest/home

It’s a different world today. I was once told by an engine re-builder that the dealerships now train their mechanics to specialize only on certain specific models of vehicles. The complexity of modern vehicles makes it impractical for them to teach mechanics how to fix everything so they teach them to be experts only on certain models.
I mean how often do you even see a vehicle on the road today that has a carburetor???
Is it expecting too much from people that they can perform basic tasks? .. like driving that vehicle when they service that vehicle. This also happened to me once before .. while travelling.
I said to the older guy, the owner, I remember when many cars had stick shifts .. when most all small cars were manual transmission. He said .. so do I. He was slightly apologetic about the whole scene as he hired the guy. In his own defense .. he did say that they get virtually no vehicles .. these days .. with manual stick shift .. and the young guy really is a good mechanic.
I have never driven anything but a stick shift.
It gives me perfect direct control over the power applied to the wheels.
To drive on the edge and do artistic things.
And perfect for handling the car in the snow, breaking free by pulsating the clutch at the rate of (felt) traction.
Same with a linear cable tied hand brake/parking brake. To make an artistic u-turn a fixed and locking parking brake will get you a crash. It’s all about the dosage and the time the brake is engaged…
It seems that soon I will have to pay extra to get the old world…
Too good my current transmission handles 390 Nm of torque. It’s the same as in the “R” model. Same as the drive shafts.
BTW, stick shifts still dominate the German market.

That day is coming. Here in Canada, the Turdeau Liberal government has this year banned the importation of any item that contains asbestos. That means that clutches for the older vehicles are going to become harder and harder to get.
A few years ago I couldn’t even get the proper clutch for an ’81 Mercury Capri. I replaced it with a substitute clutch that worked but the OEM clutch was just no longer available in Canada.
We will soon have to pay to have older clutches custom rebuilt with non-asbestos lining material…
This is one reason I’ve kept my early model 2000 vehicle this long. I had it custom built for me as in i went into the show room and sat down the the guy and we picked the stuff I wanted and iw aited for the factor to build it.
Anyhow, i was so anti-technology i went as far as to have manual windows and door locks.
I look at cars today with their auto-breaking , auto-parking and auto-lane changing. F~~~ that stuff, seriously. I WILL DRIVE thank-you.
I WILL DRIVE thank-you.
Yes and not always comply with the highway code.
Since most speed limits are for non artists, texters, alcoholics and beginners…
… and for the state revenue service.

You see the drawbacks once this s~~~ breaks and costs 1000’s of Bucks to fix.
These tech-gadgets are the early grave for today’s cars. The engine can easily last 500,000 Km or more. So the decay has to be built in in other fields. (Planned obsolescence)
Like cold soldering joints in the DIM (Tachometer panel of Volvo and VW) or the ATE ABS controller.
Some car electronics are manufactured worse and less reliable than what is on the inside of an average desktop PC.Once you know these things and fix them yourself, your car is going to last forever without costing you a fortune.
Next is the proprietary radio… But eBay has DIN and double-DIN frames for many dashboards.

I do not diss technology. But companies sometimes go way overboard.
Are we running out of things to complain about?
This was my first topic. It does make me sound like a c~~~.
Good to know there are more intricacies to these over pampering features.
Personally, I find them a bit annoying and would happily strike off thefeatures which I think are unnecessary and save some money as well. I am watching reviews on youtube and shocked to see how much the cars have changed in the decade. This was my first topic. It does make me sound like a c~~~.

I too wish the manufacturers would ditch the crap in exchange for reliability but they just build what they think most people want. They don’t add anything to a vehicle unless their market research tells them that people what it (or the government demands it)….

Anonymous1Yeah, its not just Cars either. Washing Machines, House Hold Appliances. They all need Touch Screens and Internet Connectivity. “Smart Houses” the “Internet of Things.” Its just getting more and more retarded.
Its just over complicating everything, reducing the reliability and increasing the cost. I’m a firm believer in the “Keep-It-Simple-Stupid” method. That gives you best reliability and serviceability.

I am a high-tech guy. But I see privacy issues everywhere.
That’s why I love evolved technology without the “connectivity” and spying apps to control it.
The ages between 1996 and 2009 were wonderful in that aspect.
They built things that still can be fixed and do everything a new item can do. Just as good but without telling/spying on you.
That was also my marketing speech selling satellite systems in the age of IPTV.
Customers weren’t aware of the fact that their entire TV viewing history can be protocolled by the provider. And so they bought a satellite dish system from me and receivers that came without an Ethernet connection. Or we didn’t hook it up…

Features in modern cars
LOL
I drive a 14 year old Jeep Wrangler.
With literally no features.
Soft top with plastic windows.
The radiator fan stopped turning on & off due to that sensor on the PCM being fried. So I bypassed it & wired into the relay switch and installed a $12.99 toggle switch inside the Jeep. Now if the running temp hits 210 degrees, I turn on the fan for a few minutes.
I can replace anything around the engine in under an hour. The vehicle survived a fire in the engine compartment last November. The clips holding the air filter cover we’re loose and the air filter fell out and caught on fire. I was still going 70mph with smoke rising so I pulled over, popped the hood and the engine was still running with the air filter engulfed in flames, wires burning, an O2 sensor melting. The vehicle was still running.
Twenty four days later I got it back from a Dodge dealership ready to go.Then in January at 4am in the middle of nowhere, going about 60mph, I slammed my brakes down and slammed into two deer.
Had the Wrangler towed in, covered by insurance again and got it back ten days later.
The vehicle can go anywhere due to it’s off road capabilities. And I have a Smittybilt tent system on top of it that can be opened up & secure in less than ten minutes – anywhere.
F~~~ modern cars.

I did the same to an old Car I had. Toggle Switch on the Dashboard beats “smart” sensor any day of the week.
I’d rather have my Car look like the C~~~pit of a fighter plane, if it gave me greater control and reliability.
All of the Digital Tech, is too unreliable and too much of a pain in the ass to replace. I think the Auto industry did it just to make a killing selling after market replacement parts. All of these Sensors get made for a couple bucks in China. Then they sell to us in AutoZone for a couple hundred bucks. A few months later its failed again. F~~~ THAT S~~~!!!

Use an in-hose thermostat from a 1970’s car.
And a simple relay that can handle the current of the blower motor.

Switch to Mobil-1 or pay the high price of clogged oil galleys and a possible fire if the valve cover leaks or overflows onto the manifold.
Go to a boneyard, eBay, or auto parts store and get the right sensor, if the problem is in the harness or CPU and you don’t want to go that route, get an old fashioned 180 sending unit and wire the fan through that, on a relay switch with proper amperage circuit breaker (not fuse) is the best way to do it. They usually thread into the block or head water jacket, sometimes their’ll be a threaded square-head plug blocking holes elsewhere in the cooling jacket and you can use one of these for a makeshift temp sensor.
I did my Ford powerjoke diesel oil gauge using another plug instead of pulling the entire turbocharger to get at the one they HID!
Seriously, Mobil-1 that bitch with 10-30! 5-30 will heat up too much and get too thin! Knowing you? 10-40! High Mileage!
210 f. at the water jacket doesn’t mean 210 f. everywhere! I bet your valves are SPOTLESS and your exhaust system is CLEAN, is there white soot inside the tailpipe instead of black?

P.S. never remove a thermostat either, low operating temperatures cause the products of combustion to cling to the cold parts and contaminate the oil with acid etching the surfaces and wearing them out prematurely, also cloggs the exhaust system and EGR with gobs of black thick carbon.

2 high temp type thermistors on the engine block and 2 Op-amp comparator circuits. (Double for fail safety)
And maybe more circuit paths if you want “silent mode” and have the fan going at half speed in normal driving.
And those pre-driver output stages going to high current transistor output stages.
“Pulse width modulation” controlling the motor speed. And all of that PLL locked to a frequency given by your oscillator – and turned on and off by your temperature comparator stages. Thresholds also preset by your potentiometers.
No “quartz control” needed since this is not a tape machine. LOL.
But the circuit is alike.
And the output amp must be built like an audio amplifier since DC-motors are the most and most evil complex loads you can drive. Worse than any loudspeaker system.
Then your fan will never be heard but will go into high gear when you decide to race and put it on before stepping on the gas. Just have a “sports” switch.
But the engine will never overheat if you forget it. Then the motor will go to “sports” on his own but after the fact of getting hot.
I would make cars that would have too many controls for c~~~s to drive. But setting the injection values via OSD would be fine. Beyond any exhaust regulations. Just turn the car into a rocket.

Oils with high washing factors also keep sensors clean.
Anything with VW/Audi or Porsche spec. should do.
Shell Helix kept my Audi “AEL” engine alive beyond all abuse.
303000 km.
Mobil 1 is also one of the good ones.

The synthetics are made with animal renderings, they say the renderings are the only thing that works on London Bridge’s load bearing mechanisms, I read they tried petrol based grease to eliminate the foul odor, but the bridge stopped operating smoothly and would jam up. Oil is a hydraulic spring, longer molecular springs (chains) create thicker oil. Nature has some amazing properties!
Synthetic motor oil also keeps ball bearings of buzzing and whining VCR head drums alive for many more hours.

My 94 Ranger is the best of both worlds. It has a sample electronic engine and analog speedometer/odometer, HVAC controls and a manual transmission. It currently has 225,000 miles, still has the OEM water pump. Nothing has been done to the engine other than oil, plugs and timing belt changes. Other then the drive train needing work because I have a habit of overloading it and the fuel pump taking a s~~~ every 90,000 miles it’s been mostly trouble free.
