Oh my G-d, I miss the 80s. It was the transition period between traditional and feminist culture. Relationships were at least possible, and most women hadn’t become de facto whores. Personally, I also preferred the styles of clothing and body shapes for women. Everyone wasn’t fat, disgusting, and plump.

The economy was in wildly better shape, education was cheaper, wages were much higher, and unemployment was much lower.

The government was also much, much smaller, and less intrusive. The prison industrial complex hadn’t grown to the terrifying level it’s at today.

Corruption hadn’t reached the point where malinvestment had so totally f~~~ed up the market that society was just bats~~~ doing random things that made little to no sense.

Because it was cheaper to live and easier to survive, more bands existed, and music was more of a cultural norm. Large corporations had not so completely captured radio, so there were more opportunities for smaller, independent labels to make money; this encouraged people to enter music, and music was in fact better. It was economically much more feasible to work s~~~ty jobs part-time, having a functionally independent lifestyle, while learning to play music and form bands.

The drinking age was lower, and largely nonexistent in reality, so high school students could financially support the playing of live music in bars. A better economy implies more disposable income, which people spent on things like live entertainment and live music. This provided an economic basis for a musical subculture which is just simply *gone*. I grew up in Miami, was here through the 1980s, and returned four years ago. This is a tourist town. My personal, anecdotal guess is that there’s *maybe* 1/20th the music scene there was in 1989. *Maybe*. It’s just not there any more. There’s no body count, as it were. It’s not something people do.

Less creative individuals in an endeavor, fewer creative works, lower quality. Painting is dead, as is poetry.

There’s a couple of good studies showing that complexity in music peaked in the 80s or 90s. A *lot* of people prefer music and especially music videos from that era, and feel it was a zenith creatively. There was some absolutely fantastic stuff being done.

Autotune has also killed things. Sound has been flattened out, digitilized. The human ear can pick up these differences. Analog recordings on vinyl sound *way* better than digital recording on digital. Drum machines sound like crap, digitally perfected voices and instruments sound fake and are less interesting.

Of course, it’s unclear how many “live” performers are live. Mariah Carey was not an isolated incident. Had what she been doing – defrauding the public with the help of the media – been unique or different, there’s no way they would have tried it for New Year’s for that audience. My sense is that most musical performers are using digitalization to clean up instruments and voices during live performances, which is bulls~~~, and that a sizeable percentage are lip syncing (with better control and management than happened during the chaos of that New Year’s).

No, things are much, much worse now. There are some positive developments for freedom in terms of the internet and aspects of computer science, and we’re at a cusp societally and civilizationally. It could turn around; maybe not. It is unlikely I will get my youth back to enjoy it, however.

I try and enjoy what is better today. I try and not culturally submerge too much into 80s things, even though I pretty much could choose to do so, as it makes me sad and melancholy. There are good bands out there – Seether and Placebo are two favorites. I try and enjoy what is good now; enjoy 80s stuff to the extent you can stand to without going bats~~~ with sadness and living in the past. There are good things to do now, that could not have been done then. I try and enjoy those.

Cars, of course, were way more awesome.

Any other thoughts on this: how awesome the 80s were, and how to fight melancholy and nostalgia today?

Great post, and I agree with most of it.

I think the decline of culture can be marked by the Telecommunications Act of 96 under Bill’s watch. When power is consolidated industry creativity and diversity (of ideas and points of view) will be killed as agenda will supersede it. This can be seen not only in the music industry, but in movies and t.v. as well, not to mention news… There are things, for example, characters like Al Bundi that we will never see again as agenda and propaganda is pushed by the very small group of people who are now in control of nearly everything.

Nope. TV is dying. While such shows have moved to the internet. Half the produced series on Netflix would not be shown on network TV.

Remember Milli Vanilli in the 80’s who lost some music awards for lip syncing? This crap has been around for a while. I do listen to more 80’s 90’s music in my playlist then newer music because these artist now have no creativity and sound the same.

Never lose sight of what brought you here.

Oh, I agree, T.V. is dying, as is MSM, and it is because of what I stated. I personally spend most of my time watching Youtube channels more than anything else. Guess I could have clarified that by saying “see on T.V.”.

Awesome point. You’re right. Artificial monopolies totally destroy creativity or innovation in an industry; only the internet is allowing the freedom and creativity that we’re seeing now in video. . . because it’s so much harder to control.

I don’t know about the scene in the states, but in the UK the 80’s started with Two Tone Ska, then New Romantics and synthesiser music, then Indie – Smiths / Cure, then finally Acid House and Rave music. That’s a lot of major style changes for one decade. Obviously throughout there was always Heavy Rock Metal etc and my niche of Northern Soul. Gotta’ say I enjoyed the 90’s more.

Ecconomically, some people in London and the South did fantastically well in Finance, while many areas of the North were devastated by Pit and Factory closures. I rode 60’s Italian scooters for most of the decade (Best was a Lambretta 205cc race tuned scooter), and went to rallies at the coast and gigs. Happy times if you discount the woman I was shackled to.

Would I want to go back? Only if I could live my life then with the knowledge I have now.
Anyway, I think I’d miss modern technology too much, (like this activity), and the knowledge it has given me. However, I agree the women dressed better, were cleaner and not so politicised as today. I also didn’t have to worry about speed cameras, identity theft, Islamic Terrorism, and other oppressive facets of today’s world.

I loved the time I can remember from the 80s and early 90s; the movies, the music, the arcade/pinball games, the video games, the cartoons. Yeah, it was a good time for me to be born and be raised. I kept saying for years “why can’t we go back to those good times?”

I too miss the 80’s – we still had a certain innocence

The internet – as much of a useful tool as it is –

really f~~~ed things up IMO – people became more self absorbed and we discovered just how many freaks, weirdos and other assorted scum there really are in the world.

Celular communications too,esp with the ‘smart phone’ have caused more of a ‘disconnect’ (no pun intended)
    in society.
In a way I sort of actually miss pay phones,or waiting to check your answering machine at home, now we can’t seem to be able to be unreachable.

I’d have to add the women AND men dressed better although now it seems that we’re becoming more body conscience than they are.

Music and movies seemed more ‘real’ or maybe just more genuine than todays processed, legal dept approved crap.

Then there’s ‘reality’ TV – I think it says a lot about a society that chooses to live vicariously through the lives of others – no matter how scripted that may be.

Remember the PSA announcements on TV back then that came with your Saturday morning cartoons? I miss those too,
now it seems we’re too worried about our kids playing
cowboys and Indians because it might offend a neighbour and you’ll be hung out to dry on FlakeBook.

The only positive thing I can see is that with the ‘net artists will forgo the traditional routes and just sell their fare direct to the public thereby getting around all the pc formula crap that is so indicative of mainstream movies and music.

In every single time era, people have insisted that culture and society were declining, that people were stupider, music more obnoxious, people ruder, etc. I sincerely believe you’re viewing the past with rose-colored glasses.

That may be true, but there are times that societies do collapse. Progress is not ever-increasing. Empires fall apart. Classical Greece collapses; Persia is overrun. Rome declines and falls into chaos. Byzantium likewise rots from within and is then destroyed from without. Imperial Spain and Portugal disintegrate into third-world status. Sometimes things get far, far worse.

I would argue that one of the central premises of MGTOW is that feminism has destroyed the West, the family, and religious observance; a secondary premise is probably that fiat currencies are leading to absolute and total economic destruction. I think most people on this web site – and, given the results of our recent election, most in the States – believe that things have been getting worse for quite some time, and were better in the past.

I don’t think I have rose-tinted glasses. I lived then, I live now. Things were better then, and I miss them.
