I started to prepare my backyard about a month ago, unfortunately, for me it’s a very slow process at this time, because job, studies, et cetera. I already have some potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and some herbs growing. I already ordered some wild seeds to start growing more types of vegetables, I try not to grow any modified types, just the natural/wild ones fortunately, I live in a subtropical area which is very suitable to grow a lot of different types, some grow all year round.
The ease to grow almost every kind of vegetables and fruits, compensate the lack of big wild animals. We do have deers, rabbits, but they are very scarce, with that I need to work with what I have, lots streams and river for fish and lots of lizards and some small mamals to get protein and B6/12 vitamins.
Don't look back, you're not going that way.
Crops must be planted at precisely the right time, depending on precisely where you are located for a good harvest. Everything in nature will continuously try and attack your crops as they ripen, from Deer to rabbits, insects to microbial parasites.
That’s for sure. When I plant a garden, it’s usually just tomatoes and it’s almost a full time job picking off those damn horned tomato worms. They always come and they are sometimes hard to see because they’re skin color is exactly the same as the tomato plant. Oh, I hate those bastards. Just one can destroy all your tomatoes and plants in no time.
Living off of the land and off the grid does sound very appealing, but it is anything but easy. I’m too spoiled in my old age. If the apocalypse comes tomorrow, I have enough skills and supplies to last awhile, but I really do love electricity. I won’t mind dying sooner than later.
The evil in women’s hearts leaves them no moral bounds as to inhibit them from descending to the lowest levels of darkness to acquire their self entitled desires.

You have some options to get rid of those little bastards. Plant some mint near it. Sprinkle some mint-water or garlic-water on them, it makes them run and don’t come back for some days, if your garden don’t get too much rain, it really worth the time.

Thanks for the advice. I had never heard of those remedies.

Seems it would be a good idea to start collecting actual books on survival techniques, permaculture, gardening, etc… cause if SHTF you may no longer have the internet to look s~~~ up with.
Anyone have some books they recommend?

There are many books about this topic out there, I don’t know any in particular because I seek PDF’s and ebooks to print. I don’t like to spend money where I can get the same thing for much less. I printed the U.S Army Survival Guide, and there is tons of information there. I did the same with the Brazilian Forest and Jungle Survival.

No doubt it is very helpful to have these things on hand in case of the system going down, oil, electricity and water.
I personally seek knowledge in videos, we have some great YT channels here in Brazil, it suits my reality very well. I have about 1100 videos stored on my laptop, a backup laptop, some powerbanks and some solar energy cells to get energy for them, I can keep a laptop on for hours without the need to collect energy sun again, lots of printed stuff about edible plants, first aid, and the list goes on.
I recommend you to learn the basic, doing it some times and assimilate the knowledge, like purify water, build a good shelter, know the terrain and plants where you live, plan some escape routes, et cetera. The basics to keep you alive.
I could talk about it all day, geez.

First things first stop looking East of the Mississippi River the area is far too settled and has been for far too long as an aside to that the Appalachian Mountains are lower and gentler than the Smokey all of the valleys in hollows have been occupied for a very long time you’re not going to find any sort of refuge there.
Second if you have a continuous and perpetual source of income, you will find yourself able to accomplish that without a tremendous amount of difficulty, however subsistence farming is not conducive to paying Bills and as much as you would like to be independent the sad fact is there are things you were going to pay money for.
Speaking as someone who grew up on a farm you can expect to spend anywhere from 3 to 4 hours a day attending to your garden and your animals, just basic upkeep . In addition to that amount of time you also find yourself spending entire days Either resolving unexpected problems, or working on projects that will prevent problems that you have seen coming.
This is all very doable and if you have the stream of income which will allow you to succeed then I am envious of you . I myself have hobbies and passion that while not terribly expensive do you require the outlay of hard currency on a regular basis as well as interaction with the vast majority of society . Where my hobbies and passions different or should I become unable to pursue them at that point the idea of ditching society by and large would become irresistibly attractive .
~Insert witty comment here~
A lot of people are going to die no matter what and everyone dies eventually.
More power to you preppers, do your best, but I intend to see the whole damned evil thing on its way out if it does happen.
