For a while I chewed on plastic straws

weird, I have a couple straws I cut up to the size of a cigarette, and have been chewing and pretending it is a smoke…it helps…but I agree, I need to just see myself as a non-smoker….

IMAGINE THAT FOR JUST A MOMENT AND NOT F~~~ING PANIC LIKE CRAZY EH!!! Trying to get your breath and not being able to….F~~~ING SCARES THE LIVING S~~~ OUT OF ME…So, I have decided to do something about it…Anyways, I hope that helps you…Peace brothers, I am going to go try taking a nap, maybe I won’t think about it if I am sleeping…

I’ve tried several times to quit – the most recent being a few months back and failed miserably.

The problem is when I have a drink my cravings go up 100x. The association between drinking and smoking is incredibly strong.

I plan on trying again after I finish this pack. I think I’ll have to curb the beers.

I’m heavily into my fitness and the amazed looks I get when people see me light up after a session on the track – covered in sweat and cigarette hanging out my mouth ha.

Best of luck to everyone trying to quit.

Good luck Jeremiah! I tried quitting twice, last time was 11 years ago. I know I need to, still I’m just not ready yet. Someday.
I did like the bizarre dreams I had when I was on Nicoderm.
Anyway, best of luck to you!

Good luck. I have never smoked in my life, because I couldn’t stand the stink. It mystified me why anyone would start smoking, but it’s the chemical giving the ‘high’. Not sure if I offer any aid, but if you’re quiting one thing, maybe add another (healthier) habit? And, btw, I don’t think rubbing one out is a bad habit (to Math).

I have been smoking now for 10 years. I keep telling myself it keeps me away from illegal drugs. But that’s a load of s~~~. I stopped once for a month in that time – i started hacking black s~~~ up. It was messed up. Did I feel better? Yes. But the addiction is far worse than anything I have faced to come clean. I conquered being overweight when I was young, I did alot more too.. But smoking seemed to be this impossible constant for me. I hope one day I have strength to stop. I hate it. I hate smoking more than radical feminism. You know what in my heart this place here could be the place to do it. It’s different when I hear the members here talk about. It seeps in deep. Be content my friend you are one step ahead of me and am inhailing the dust -cause your going light-speed.

Allan Carr’s Book Easy Way to Quit???

Read that 8 months ago haven’t smoked since after 30 years at a pack a day it really works I can’t recommend it enough.I’d say get it in paperback though so you can keep it in your back pocket and read it as you walk through life, my method was I read it while I smoked so if I had to go outside on the porch or restaurant I would just pull out the book and a smoke and light up and puff and read, must say I got some weird looks from passers-by but I don’t smoke now so yeah best and only self-help book I ever read.

Go for it brother. You can definitely do it.

I have been trying for a while. I quit buying packs a long time ago and I’ll take tobacco chew pouches a few times a night when I drink. No sober tobacco use for a very long time. My strategy has been to ween myself slowly and it has been working I believe.

So basically two nights a month I use a little chewing tobacco now when I’m drinking with the boys. I have bummed a few cigs when at the bar etc but I still think it’s leaps and bounds from when it was 1-2 packs a day.

I think after NYE this year I’ll try to cut it out completely. Not because of a new year resolution but because I’ll have a tough time not partaking on such a big party night.

Best of luck to you man, as an ex smoker of almost 10 years ago I know it is hard. I quite by sheer will power and drinking water… every time I felt having a drag I drank water. If you are thinking of vaping don’t be stupid and do that, its trading one carcinogen for another… that s~~~ gives you popcorn lung (its a real none curable permanent condition) and empties your wallet. Try substituting the craving for something healthy like fruit or working out or something that is good for you and see what happens.

Thanks Skeptisk…I am quitting cold turkey

I hope I’m not out of bounds here, but I never officially “quit” for a reason. Because I still might have one here and there — with a drink or c~~~tail when the mood really hits.

If I officially “quit” and made some grand overture about it, I would hate myself for lighting up just once, so I never really “quit”, and that way I can still have ONE without feeling like a weak asshole.

    Interesting thing is….

When I still allow myself to still have ONE in “emergencies”, it turns out I don’t really want it after all.

    Strange, that.

In any case, however you approach it, I wish you every success with it!

Keep calm… this too will pass. It’s not permanent. EXPECT it too happen, and tell yourself that this is part of your OLD habit dying.

Also, don’t be alarmed if you start having dreams about smoking. It’s all just part of the process.

Remember, the smoking habit is like an invasive weed that you let grow wild for years. It has entangled itself around your daily life. Smoking was a good friend that you are attempting to cut out of your life. It was one of the first things you did when you woke up, and one of the last things you did before you went to bed. You did it when you were: happy, sad, mad, thinking, relaxing, after eating, etc. In other words it was ALWAYS there for you.

EXPECT that you will have CRAVINGS and certain things will trigger CRAVINGS. Be prepared psychologically to talk yourself down, and have some thing ELSE to reward yourself with other then a cigarette. Allow yourself to be in a mad mood when you have to be. ALL this s~~~ will pass!!

Yes, drinking and smoking go hand and hand. I could smoke upwards of 2 packs a day, and when I was drinking, I could easily smoke another pack on top of that.

When I quit smoking, and I went out drinking, I made a deal with myself that instead of having a cigarette, I would reward myself with another beer. Probably not the best idea, and I don’t recommend it, but it worked to keep me from smoking. Unfortunately, it definitely amped up my drinking. I dealt with the drinking a couple/few years down the road after the smokes were gone.

Thank You Key…Indeed, great philosophy Key, and I hope that works for you, but for me, I don’t think I am the kind of guy who can just have one every now and again…If I have one, there will be 2, then 3, then 4…Then just after dinner, or just when I wake up…Then all over again…I have heard of some people being able to keep it at bay like yourself, have friends that only smoke at certain times, etc, but that is not me…Either all or none kind of guy here…Just no gray area in my world, your either black or white, yes or no, smoke or not….But I certainly appreciate that you can sir, and am glad that even when you do have one, you end up deciding you didn’t really want it anyway…With me sir, I just cannot be a smoker, cannot let that little cancer stick back in even for a drag here or there, but….on the other hand, I can enjoy a good cigar…But that will have to wait until all this s~~~ is over and my lungs are healed back up…I do enjoy a really fine cigar…And btw Key – – – – No matter what, your opinion is NEVER EVER out of bounds as far as I am concerned brother, as a matter of fact, I was kinda wondering where you sat in the whole smokers boat…Now I see you sit in the back with the other cool kids…lol

Hell Yeah sir…I bought a pound of these fireb~~~~, S~~~ I wasn’t sure if they were even still around or not, had not seen them since I was a little kid…Sure enough Amazon has them…We used to all run down to the 7-11 when I was a youngster, and buy up penny and nickel candies, and the ONE video game they had down there in the corner of the store…Man the 7-11 was freaking magical when I was a kid, cannot explain it, just loved hanging out down there…Every now and again, probably once a summer, I could get a slushy…man that was a super treat though, and did not happen often…

Funny – I avoid going into 7-11 now at all costs…Or any other convenience store for that matter…
