Just a few years ago, cell phone security was the last thing on most users’ minds. But today, keeping your data secure on your smartphones is just as critical as securing your desktop and laptop computers.

A significant volume of data leakage stems from simple carelessness and lack of information and knowledge about security. What have you done about these threats?

1. Passcode lock (which is not your birthdate or street number) – on most modern devices. Set unique passwords for each of your apps. Consider using a password management system

2. Encrypt the storage – again, most modern devices have the ability to encrypt phone storage.

3. Set up remote wipe – again most modern devices support this functionality.

4. Set up emergency contacts visible from pin entry screen.

5. Phishing email that has an urgency to it (e.g., subject line: Get back to me asap).

6. The sender may pose as a bank or someone with authority

7. Be suspicious of free download offers.

8. Buy applications from a trusted app store

9. All devices should be set to erase all of the device’s data automatically after a set number of password attempts

10. All devices, especially Androids, should have anti-virus.

11. Never “jailbreak” or “root” a mobile device

12. Activate your update alerts immediately.

13. Wi-Fi in public is not secure use VPN.

14. Limit your connections to unknown people / sites

15. Disable the use of apps not downloaded from your device’s app store. There are rare exceptions.

16. The choice of messaging services.

17. Encrypt and anonymize every transaction

18. Properly backup your phone

19. Move away from storing private and sensitive information in the public cloud

20. Turn on Limit Ad Tracking.

21. Don’t give out your devices IMEI or MEID numbers

22. Don’t share your device with others

23. Delete text messages or emails that may contain sensitive information

Great information as always Yumbo but I would like to add one more thing that someone can do.

24. get a flip cell phone that is not a smart phone where you don’t have to do step 1-23.

I use a computer for when I need to be online and a regular flip phone for when I am out and about during work and I can look at any e-mails I need when at work or at home. If you need to be connected 24 hours a day because of a job who cares if they hack into that and take all the info if it is only work related. It is up to your employer to insure their devices are secure and if you are the boss it is up to you to separate your work phones from your personal phones. Problem solved.

Cheers. If you are on PC not cell phone use the third party WinAuth 2FA app – I’m using it. If you set it up it’s a backup in case your phone dies. I will not trust anything from s~~~ Google.

What VPN software are you using? The most important is updating.

Do you have a support e-mail/number to call for this or a website where you have FAQ?

It should not conflict with your OS or virus scanner. Check the internet for issues of this type.

TBH, it’s free version of Hotspot Shield.

I’ve planned to use it as basic tool for more safe Internet usage, following your advice. For now it’s temporary remedy and I’m planning to get more encrypted VPN software in future (very likely it would be bought, but payment requisites leakage is one of my major concerns).

My choice why I picked up that particular soft was based on the fact of FAQ and technical support sections presence on official site.
So far no problems with antivirus or with other software occurred.
I hope there won’t be any in the future, but I’m preparing myself for the worst = )

I’m honestly looking for advices onto how ensure oneself security and privacy in today’s environment.

I am not a VPN expert so you will need someone on this site who can answer any difficult questions. We will all help no problem.

Now just test the VPN. If you can set the proxy IP address on your TBH and check it on this site:

Anyone that keeps important, confidential information on their smartphone is an absolute IDIOT! Even if it didn’t have all the backdoors that let the government see everything you do, just the fact that it’s portable and easily stolen is reason enough not to put anything important on it.

I use my phone strictly for business. I have absolutely NO passcode on it, nor do I allow it to use my fingerprint for unlocking. You just turn it on, and there it is. I do NOT use it for banking. I do NOT use it to log into important websites. All the photos on it are of products I’m selling. My call history will reveal all my clients #’s that I’ve talked to in the past month, but that’s about it. I also have a few stupid games on it to pass the time, none of which I care about. And for God’s sake, I do NOT use it to look at porn! Why anyone would want to look at porn on a 5″ screen just boggles my mind anyway.

I use phones only as emergency call devices and do all important things on a desktop PC with a multi-monitor setup. One of 25 I own and some of them weigh about 20 Kg each.

The cops were at my place and they could not even energize them…
