In the US, it varies by state but I have heard stores in the past that a while during a protracted divorce the separated wife got pregnant by Chad and since she was still legally married her soon to be ex got the bill.

The judge said “someone has to take care of the child’s needs”.

I believe it was in PA.

When it comes to these stories, I stick to reading actual case law, as there are many false rumors out there. Nothing beats actually reading the judge’s decision.

Laws vary, but I find it hard to believe that a man would be responsible for another man’s child, if he was not living with the child in some capacity.

You hear stories about women who trick men into fatherhood. The man pays child support because he’s the father. The fact that he was tricked is not the purview of the family court. The child was born, he’s the father, and the child has financial needs, so the father pays.

You also hear stories of men who were tricked into raising a child that they thought was their child, but it turns out it wasn’t. Again, the fact that he was tricked is not the purview of the family court. He acted as a parent to that child, he is the only father the child has known, and he will pay child support based on the fact that he acted as a parent to the child.

I’m not saying that I agree with these assessments, but that’s how the family courts work in my neck of the woods.

Luckily, the courts in my neck of the woods are not going to make you pay child support for a child that’s not yours, and you and mom were broke up before the child was even born. However, if the child is born, and you act as a parent, that’s a different story.
