Ironically Those who went out this way included non smokers and moderate drinkers.

I’ve noticed that too. I’ve seen hard drinking, hard smoking people live well into their 80s. I’ve seen healthy, fit, gym goers drop dead in their 50s.

Life is not fair and I say live it how you want to. Seems like doing all the right things or doing all the wrong things has little affect on your life expectancy despite what Doctors would have you believe.

Death is the only certainty. Lately, I have a renewed interest in Re-Incarnation. Original European Pagan religions all believed in Re-Incarnation and there seems to be some Scientific research being done into this subject as well.

no one ever came back and complained.
    probably not so bad….

Not so bad at all. We just go back to non-existence. Our own non-existence wasn’t a problem before we existed was it?

Death bothers many people because they just really don’t stop to seriously think how f~~~ing horrible living indefinitely would actually be…

I had a grandfather who smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish his whole life. He lived until he was 95. He died of gangrene poisoning in the leg. The same leg that he got shot up in the First World War…

What messes me up is when someone much younger dies way before their time

    Good post, Greg.

Yes I agree – there’s a very different atmosphere at a funeral of a woman who lived a full life and died in her 90’s than there is at the funeral of a school friend that took his own life at 24.

There was a Twilight Zone episode in which the lead character was a man who was thousands of years old. He had met an alchemist who gave him a potion for immortality.

After all those years he finally got sick of living. In the end he slowly decayed into a pile of dust as the spell finally wore off. He did so with a smile as he knew death had finally arrived.

From the Blood Sweat and Tears song “And when I die”: “If its peace you find in dyin’ well then…let the time be near.”

There was a story of 104 old man not long ago who went to Switzerland for euthanasia. He said he regrets deeply he lived to reach 104 years.

My take from this is I better live fully for as long as possible than simply wait for inevitable in later years in fear.

Death is not an end but a beginning the sooner you understand that the sooner you will come to peace with mortality. But yeah go ahead and blame God or anyone else you think is responsible you were never meant to live forever everything comes to an end here on earth eventually. Live your life how you want you are here to experience and learn from it but some people will never be able to grasp this and will fall short when it comes time to meet their maker.

As an Atheist I see death as my ultimate end and I’m totally fine with that. I would imagine that many other non-believers feel the same…

Over the last few years since my divorce I have been thinking the same thing. Everywhere I look I see people working their ass off to buy a nicer car or to have a big house extension built for the “wow factor”. Every body wants to get themselves into debt up to their eye b~~~~ and go to a stressful job they hate every day to show people they are “doing well”

We are all going to die, when you are on your death bed are you going to think back to the long scrapped Mercedes you “owned” 30 years ago? Are you going to think that the pointless, stressful job that you had to do every day for years to pay for it made it worth it?

I am 44 and I have a decent standard of living, flushing toilet, healthcare, freedom and my health is good. I am better off than probably 99% of the planet. Most people never take a step back and think of how lucky they are, they are more concerned that consumerism makes them feel inadequate for the things they don’t have.

I have an 11 year old car that works perfectly, do I care that someone I don’t know in a white, leased Audi may look down on me? No, I love the freedom of being able to park anywhere I like and not worry about it.

These people don’t see they have been conned into exchanging the best years of their life through work in return for some temporary possessions. Possessions on the whole that will cause more grief as you have to look after them and worry about them.

When I was younger, I wanted “stuff”. Now that I’m older, “stuff” is becoming less important. My house is very modest, but I’m just glad I have a home to keep me warm and dry in winter and cool in the summer. My truck is 12 years old and has rust on it, but I’m very glad that it runs well and gets me where I need to go.

I used to worry about having the few things I own being stolen from me. Now, not so much, because it’s all just stuff and it’s all temporary. Everything on this Earth is temporary, including the Earth itself. The stuff we wanted so much and polish and clean to keep it shiny will turn to rust and dust and none of it will matter. I look down at the ground sometimes and wonder how much stuff that was once someone’s cherished belongings has long since returned to the dirt right where I’m standing.

The older I get, the more I look forward to death. I have no death wish and am currently enjoying my life, but I don’t want to get old and feeble and not be able to take care of myself. Everyone is going to die. It’s been happening for a very long time now. I’m not afraid of death. It’s part of life. I just hope it happens when I’m home and alone and that it happens quickly and painlessly.

The other day at work, I had this strange feeling in my left arm and a bit of pain in the left side of my neck up into my jaw. All I could think of is “God, please not at work……”. I almost left the office and got into my truck so I could go home and die in peace. Wouldn’t want anyone seeing me on the floor and calling for an ambulance. I’d rather just die and get it over with, as opposed to waking up in the hospital having them tell me that I need some f~~~ing surgery.

My dad had a heart attack a few years ago and he called 911. They did a triple bypass on him and said that would extend his life at least another 15 years. He said recovering from the operation was the worst pain he’d ever felt in his life and would never want to experience it again. Last week he came to visit me and was complaining that he could no longer do the things he did when he was younger because he was too old, crippled and feeble. What good is another 15 years of living like that?

I’m already to the point that I can no longer do things like I did when I was younger. Just changing the oil in my truck the other day was a damn struggle. The older I get, the less I can take the heat of summer. I only mow my yard about 3 or 4 times a season now because I can’t take the heat.

No, I don’t want to live to the point of having to rely on others to take care of me. Death is a much more welcome thought. It will eventually happen, so I pray that it comes for me before I get “too old”.

I’m glad you posted your thoughts on this because I was curious and believed yours would closely resemble my thoughts.

As someone who believes in God and an afterlife existence, I feel very much similar. Either way, death is the end of this corporal existence.

You are not afraid because you believe there is nothing else and you will blink out of existence and that will be that. I am not afraid of death because I believe this physical life will be over and I will be released into another plane of existence, the spiritual one.

Just spent the day at hospital to witness my nan look look like someone unrecognisable and gasp for air, while they stop treating her and pump her full of morphine.

The look of death on someone’s face is difficult – like seeing a corpse still breathing.

Me and my brother drove back through the countryside. I looked out the window and realized the countryside looks good in the sun.

    Lessons learned:

1: you may as well run around in a field rather then work – we’re all going the same way.

2: enjoy the younger years, they want to work you to death and then you’re dead.

    3: who gives a f~~~.

I live this every day and you are right, enjoy the breeze, the sun, relax as much as you can becouse one day you will be there on the bed, dying, doesn’t matter what you do, you will be there.

Kids, no kids, wife, no wife, hard worker, lazy bum, drug dealer, decent men, it does not matter, my lord, the reaper will come for you.

The final rest, the last day, the absolute retirement, that day will come and I’m delighted to think that one day it will be my last, from a heart attack or maybe old and insane covered in my own s~~~, one day I will be free.

However, for this moment, I will enjoy the breeze and the sun, the food, the air, the water, the warmth of the fire, the mountains and everything life has to offer.

    Everything else? 0 f~~~s given.

To those following me, be careful, I just farted. Men those beans are killers.

I really hope it is the end, I’m pleased with this time.

I do not wish to exist after my death, I want to go into nothingness and just stop existing.

The idea of existing after this life is just disgusting to me.

Everything must come to an end and if god exist (hope not), given enough time even god shall die, and even time shall stop.

Im not afraid of my end, it is my wish to just vanish into nothing.

Now I ask the believers, why do you wanna keep existing after your death?

Why do you want there to be a god, an afterlife, why are you so afraid of nothingness?

I would think that the concept of death would be much harder on the believer. If their particular faith has a Hell, how could any one of them be absolutely, positively certain that they won’t end up there?

How it is possible that they know for sure that they’ll be going to a Heaven???

Whatever differences in our beliefs, it seems we can all agree on this. Enjoy in this life what we can, while we can.

One of the most enjoyable things for me is a nice breeze. A nice cool breeze on a warm day and a gentle warm breeze on a cool evening. Such a simple, natural thing, but I really love it.

As for me, I am not afraid of nothingness. If that’s what there is after life then that’d be fine too. It isn’t that I want there to be an afterlife. I just believe that there is one. I don’t choose to believe this, I just believe it.

Either way, an afterlife or no afterlife, I’m not worried about it.

Some believers will imagine Heaven to be a place where you would go to lie in the soft grass listening to pleasant harp music for an eternity. Something that you’d get tired of doing after 5 minutes here on earth.

I think it was Mark Twain who might have said that…
