Hello; I’m Jj (forced dead beat dad; I’m a very nice guy) I practice, compose, and study both the Mandolin and Guitar. I’d like to know what you guys play and what projects you are working on or what interest you etc.. Right now I am taking Cittern pieces from the 1500 -1600s and rewriting them for the mandolin. A Cittern is tuned BGDE (Mandolin is tuned GDAE and has the same range as a Cittern) so essentially you can keep the lead melody intact, the issue left is to rewrite the chords or play different voicing. Also is you tune the G-string of a guitar to F#/Gb (E A D F#/Gb B E) it is now Lute tunning, add a capo at the 3rd fret the be in the same range. I’ve studied music from Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Celtic, Jazz, World music etc., 70s, 80′, 90s (I grew up in the 80-90s and am a big Alice in chains fan). I like it all (not into rap or pop).
Jj lots of musicians here. I have played Guitar from the age 13..Sing and play harmonica..I am 52 years old now..
like you not into rap, and not into opera, but classical is good
I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.
Very cool to harpomason; I’ve been practicing with a guy who is a guitar player for over 12+ years who is 20 years my senior (he is in his mid 50’s) i’ve learned quite a bit over the years from him (He primarily focuses on 70’s rock; we have done acoustic covers of let’s say Balck Sabbath and Crosby Stills Nash and Young). Opera is largely for women… one thing opera did do at it’s beginnings (late Renaissance) was open up music to new forms, but if you take someone like the composer Bach (the Albert Einstein of composers) , he ended up being unpopular, became obscure, then was resurrected and praised in the 1900’s; he wrote for the church and never created any operas therefore never gaining the popularity he could have if he had done so.
Musician here. Guitar player for 37+ years. I also pay bass. I write/compose. I also sing. Blues is my first love. However, I have a strong affinity for many many types of music. I have had several bands over the years. I am not very active currently due to a s~~~ ton of responsibility. However, I did recently buy everything for a digital home recording studio. I just need time to learn to use it.

Anonymous42Guitar, sing, and can pound out a good beat using my feet and anything that sounds good. My brother and I have played for years, I’m currently guitar-less, I want to get back into it…oh yea I can read music too, I know my chords and scales. played Zeplin, VH, Pink floyd, Rush, lead belly, and many others. I recently developed a liking to blue grass, but my favorite is blues.
Robert Jonson is amazing, I wish I could only heard him in Hi Fi, not the scratchy tin can recordings of him from almost a century ago.
Soul Man; since the early 2000s I have used a 4track tape recorder, despite the fact that I had to special order the tapes (they were mostly not sold anymore) the recordings had a very warm feel to them, like what u here in a Jimmy Hendrix album. Sadly it broke last year. I do have a new recorder but like you I must learn how to operate the device. Good luck on your musical endeavors man!
It’s inspiring to see so many axe strapped warriors poets in my midst! My favorite song from that Robert Johnson album is Preaching Blues (Up Jumped The Devil l!)

Get down!!
Anonymous42Hey JJ, Robert Johnson must have fingers that are hardwired individually to his brain, it would take 5 musicians each there own string to come close to Johnson’s miraculous control and coordination, he’s the absolute best guitarist in a 500 year span…
My father had a reel to reel when we were kids, we heard Peter Paul and Mary’s Puff the Magic Dragon for the first time. He had lots of tapes, they sounded uniquely good, just like all the other vacuum tube hi-fi of yesteryear… Nothing beats the high energy static killing amplification of the vacuum tube circuit. An EMP wave would be buried alive in it’s circuitry. Vacuum tubes are king over transistors and microprocessors.
The high voltage from spark plug fields use to destroy the first electronic ignition systems.
Listening to Robert J. in those recordings brought confusion to me when I found out he was the only one playing; he had extremely long fingers and could play base and lead at the same time in ways that where astounding. The only other musician that comes close to him is Jimmy Hendrix.
*That brings back memories of my grandfather, he would give me tapes of early music which now I’ve grown a taste and obsession with.
Thank you for sharing;

^ This is Bernardo de Pace; I study a few pieces from the master of the mandolin. Check him out~
Anonymous42@ JJ, Imagine what they could do with the power-steering of modern electric guitars? I’m a f~~~in cripple against them! Those old guitars you could slide a domino under the strings and not hit a fret…I bet they could crack a billiard ball in a single poke……Ninja Guitarists!
Jimmy page from Led Zeppelin was playing with heavy set strings cuz that’s all they had! Men from earlier periods of musicianship hands were stronger then what we see now. In the 80’s the string gadge became lighter for faster playing.
I hear ya man…..analog always has that “old familiar sound” that feels like a warm blanket with a cool pillow. That’s why I strictly use tube amps with my guitars.
Here’s just a very small sampling of greats that I admire. …

Anonymous42GHS Boomers are my pick of strings, those old guitars were nothing short of bridge suspension cables! I use automotive wax to prevent premature rusting (New England) even the rust rusts around here!
@ Harpomason, that guy is looking to make a nelson guitar…
I use Martin strings for both my Mandolin and Guitar; also because of our climate I do a tune up on both instruments in the spring and in the fall (Truss rod adjustments, String hight, hammer frets down, and intonation (especially the mandolin, the movable bridge make it easier than the fixed bridge of the guitar.) I use a medium’s on my Mando (aka hatchet) and med/lite on my git-axe.
Who is the man of excellent on the acoustic Soul Man?
The older gentleman with the Australian accent is Tommy Emmanuel. He is simply phenomenal! I’ve seen him live 3 times. The younger looking fellow is a native Texan. He is Eric Johnson, another killer guitarist. I’ve seen him live a couple of times.
HISTORY...learn from it, memorize it, DON'T repeat it...Tommy is very cool indeed; I have set up* for Eric Johnson during my stage crew days, his lead work mind blowing.

I love Eric Johnson. I just saw him at the MIM Theater in Phoenix this past January. Kickass show as usual.
Tommy Emmanuel was a protégé of Chet Atkins. Tommy is one of only a handful of guitarists in the world to hold the title of “Certified Guitar Player” as bestowed by Chet himself. Tommy is very humble and down to earth. He is a real class act and all around great human being.
