Once upon a time I was in ROTC (I never took my commission, because I was dumber than paint, and followed a girl halfway across the country and dropped out of college after finishing the term; I later finished myriad degrees, but didn’t finish ROTC. disclaimers apply, just making it clear I’m not claiming any particular honor nor active service).

So some slight and practical military familial background.

We’re in formation one day, in active formation. On the football field, but theoretically in active theater. Plastic rubber ducks and other weight-realistic plastic weapons issued, all that s~~~.

One of the seargeants starts a long, slow whistle that can only mean one horrible, horrible thing to anyone actually trained or familial or well-read in actual combat. The cadre, who are technically observers and not participants, are just sitting watching what everyone does.

I bug the f~~~ out, grab my battle buddy, start literally kicking him and pulling him, with me, off the field and into the swale near the concession stand. I roll a dumpster over us as much as we can. Having witnessed my correct assumptions in the past, he just goes with it.

Everyone else on the field is “dead”, as per the rules of the game. Long slow whistle means incoming. The two of us are the only ones who aren’t “dead”, as a bunch of American soldiers massed together are an awesome target for all matter of badness. Everyone else has lots of extra crap to do; we basically get the rest of the afternoon off.

But I’m not involved with this chick. I’ve been invited over, f~~~ed her numerous times, and she feels like I owe her something. I know that without her even saying it. Her mind works differently because she’s a female, and I’m a male not looking for a provider. So I’m going to make a clean break from this, and I think it’s entirely possible for me to do so. There are no ties holding us together other than memories of us f~~~ing, and a few dinner dates. Once her daughter gets into her head about things going back to normal between them it should be an understanding on the mom’s behalf that it just wasn’t going to work, and I have serious objections to her mood and emotional fickleness. I’m not on board, and no amount of forcefulness in character will change that.

It’s not possible. She made the decision to have a kid at 16-17, and with her being 33 and the child also a teenager there is a relationship issue between them that probably stems from closeness in age so to speak. The father is not in the picture at all. He’s on the west coast, and she lives on the east coast. So there were red flags all over the place, and I simply ignored them. A lot of s~~~ I knew to avoid, but I walked right into it.

You’re right about experiential knowledge being the best teacher however. This is a fixable situation. As much as you may think I’m buried over this one month rendezvous I’m leaning towards the contrary.

I’d hope to avoid s~~~ like this in the future, and I’ll do whatever it takes to avoid crazy single mothers.
