Your vote on Live Notifications

Gents, good evening – or “morning” (depending on where you are in the world).

A few members have asked for something that will alert you if you have a PM (private message), if someone responds to your post, or “follows you” etc.. and so we have a new live notifications which will alert you as you’re browsing the site.

It’s pretty demanding on the site, but you may notice us testing it during non-peak times.

Please let us know if you like it – or hate it – or if you’re indifferent. If the demand is high, we will implement it for a future release, but may have to wait until we upgrade to faster servers.

You will see a “bell” in the lower left corner of your screen with a red marker if there was any activity. It will also let you know if someone viewed your profile – so please don’t be creeped out about that.

We will be turning it on and off periodically.

I definitely love this feature. I wish more forums had a feature like this. I sort of hate keeping multiple tabs open just to be aware of responses to my posts. This notification feature makes it that much easier to keep track of all that.

Do continue to encourage bros to sign up for a paying membership. So many man are dependent on the site.. you need resources to run it.

I definitely would sign up for the membership if I could afford it. Right now however, I’m trying to pay off my school loans as much as possible so it’s just not an option to pay for extra things.

I’m loving the notification system but I do understand features like that slow down websites if you don’t have the system upgraded to meet the requirements.

You could also reach a compromise and keep it on certain pages like the profile page so you don’t have to load it on every page. While every follow or reply may be written for every user, you don’t need to have it everywhere. I think it’s terrific.

I like it but Ive read studies that facebook notifications release dopamine rushes in a person when they see a notification leading to addictions.

But interactions on this site are much different from other social medias that tend to create validation dependencies.

All in all good addition.

The cool part is, the notifications are LIVE, so it will cut back on page refreshes too. You can just leave the window alone and the little red dot will just appear every couple of minutes. I love it. It’s just a bit heavy. So we will try it out and get feedback and see later.

It’s a good idea, but is it possible to have the bell icon appear only when there is activity? Having the bell icon there for nothing and needing a second indicator on top of it for when it’s worth clicking seems a little unnecessarily busy.

For now, leaving it always visible while testing so members know it’s ON (testing)….
and if the bell is not there, the feature is OFF (testing).

But for a full release, we can do it so that it only displays if you have notifications.
