Whether that’s to be like UNIX, or to be something entirely different.

Different how? I’m not sure what you mean there.

So I thought about it more before switching to Windows. The only thing I really use Windows for is a few applications that aren’t available for Linux, and games.

What I’m doing instead of installing Windows on my main system, is that I’m going to install Windows 7/10 on a virtual machine.

That way, I get to keep Linux(which I do love in spite of all its problems) and game on Linux as well. And since I really only play old games on Windows, I won’t have a problem with them on a virtual machine.

    Best of both worlds.

    Windows 10 is bipolar.

The user interface and basic technologies are vastly improved. The forced updates and telemetry are draconian.

I was closing out my accounting year and a feature upgrade decided to reboot on me one night. Luckily, Excel autosaved properly otherwise I would have been f~~~ed so I turned rebooting control back over to me. Since I’m a Pro Edition user, I’ve a little more control.

I do not like the tricky ways they try to force updates on average users. Windows 10 is not fully backwards compatible either. Telemetry is now a feature of Windows 7/8.1 too by the way. I will try the Spybot antibeacon. I’ll be able to tell from my logs if it does any good.

There is a Windows 10 feature that lets MS upload files for troubleshooting. I’m under NDAs for certain clients so I supposedly turned that feature off. Windows 10 proves Microsoft does not give a f~~~.

S~~~ like this makes me glad I’m only going to use Windows in a virtual machine. I’m also glad I posted a thread like this before actually doing anything major.

I do love Linux, I just wish it had more support for games and emulators. But, at least the games I’m wanting to play will work just fine in a virtual machine under Windows.

The systemd crowd is pulling Linux away from it’s roots, by making dramatic and sometimes controversial changes. Major companies like Red Hat are supporting them. I don’t know that Linux will have much actual UNIX left in it in the future.

Linux will still be Linux. As many forks and distros as there are out there, not everyone will go to systemd. I don’t know what the big fuss over that is anyway. I just need a better operating system that’ll work and do s~~~ for me. I couldn’t give a s~~~ about open source vs closed source software.

And that being said, I’m using Debian because it’s one of the most stable operating systems out there that’s based on Linux.

Wound up taking advantage of some deals, and will be doing a new Skylake build. I will be using Win7 though. I will just turn off updates and never update it. Within 5 years I can see if Linux really takes off, and if it does, I’d switch to Linux and then think about my next build at that point.

Win10 on its last forced update uninstalled a couple of programs and changed file associations. I was not pleased.

Almost every game plays on Win7 anyway. I will wait on my GPU upgrade a bit, I sorely needed a new CPU though, and will be fine the next 5-6 years with the i7.

That’s definitely the way to go if you’re not going to use a virtual machine in Linux.

If Windows 10 didn’t have so many technical issues I wasn’t aware of (especially before this thread) I wouldn’t have a problem using it.

But since the only thing I use Windows for is gaming, it’s better put off in a virtual machine on my Linux system. That way if something is f~~~ed up by the updates, I can just delete the virtual machine and reinstall it.

Allegedly DX12 is supposed to be a big deal. But with Win10’s bunglings, I can see Vulkan taking over, and that will work on everything. And if that’s the case, I can see migration to Linux as a result.

Most older games you can run on a virtual machine, but not newer games.

I foresee systemd crashing and burning under the weight of its own cruft and bloat and hubris.

Even Linus hates it and thinks the maintainers are assholes.

A friend showed up at my door with a laptop that a small construction company uses to run their company where they got tricked into upgrading from Win 7. Well, a critical $5,000 dollar program they use would not even run under Windows 10. Even on this POS laptop which had no evidence of being backed up, ever. The rollback process took all of 10 minutes. Microsoft is screwing the pooch massively.

He took me to a really nice place for lunch for saving his bacon.

I’m rolling out some Win 7 machines for a small company where the admin assistant is the IT expert. I did purchase them with Win 10 Pro licenses for eventual use. I swear every clean install I’ve done of Win 10 goes differently. Windows 10 seems to change by the week. I guess we all need to cough up for Windows 10 Enterprise to not be treated like children.

    Fun times…..

Win10 and the future is also why I am moving strictly into networking only over the next year.

Last night windows 10 downloaded in a W-7 ubdate. I had to hit decline twice, before God all Mightrosoft would uninstall and return to W-7, wasting my f~~~ing time! And RISKING MY MACHINE!

Hey MICROSOFT, NO MEANS MOTHERF~~~ING NO, OR DO I HAVE TO POUND IT IN YOUR F~~~ING HEAD BY STANDING IN LINE ON A W-10 CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO POUND NO MEANS NO RIGHT UP YOUR ASS!

    @Tower:

Download and install GWX control panel:

    GWX Control Panel

I had a machine with MS Security Essentials asking for permission to send the files for this to Microsoft. I declined. They can go to the f~~~ing web site and download it themselves. They are at war with this guy so keep on top of it.

It works well now though. There is another package whose name I cannot recall that does the same thing too. It’s SOP for any Win7 machine I meet.

Thank-you very much kind sir C-Pig, Nobel kayak man of the deep sea.

That cork fit perfectly up Microsoft’s ass, and they gave me a little hammer to pound it in, and the hammer rings a bell if they try to come back.

    Nicely done +1!

    Thanks C-Pig, U-da-man!

Here, I’ll pass it along; Perfect 10, Ass cork panel

Win10 and the future is also why I am moving strictly into networking only over the next year.

This is why I’m scared as s~~~ to go into other fields such as programming. I’d rather deal with networking concepts and routers and switches any day of the week than to have to deal with the bulls~~~ Microsoft brings to companies on an enterprise level.

I’m working towards getting my Cisco certifications for this very reason.

It’s one thing to deal with bulls~~~ on your own personal computer, but it’s an entirely different thing to deal with this bulls~~~ on an enterprise level.

Same here. My home Cisco lab is arriving today. I’ve mostly worked with Adtran and Enterasys products on corporate networks. The two IT things I love most are SQL Database programming/design and networking.

They are moving to version 3 of the cert tests this August. I’ve been in the field so long that I already know a decent amount. I just need to practice on real Cisco equipment and learn what they want me to know. I’ve always been a very strong troubleshooter which is very important in networking.

I may price what the tech school down the road charges, but I learned how to learn in college so I can do it on my own.

I totally agree that dealing with Microsoft’s bulls~~~ on the Enterprise levels sucks meat. I liked the company better under Gates. I hate this new guy. He makes me pine for Ballmer.

I love those as well as ethical hacking concepts. I’d love to do any of those for free or for a salary.

I definitely agree with that. Microsoft was the best under Gates. Even Ballmer was better than the new guy Microsoft has.

Finally got Win7 running on my i7-6700k. Hopefully everything else is in order, including the TIM etc. RAM seems to be okay, sound is okay, graphics installed…

Did try Linux Mint but sadly, without motherboards supporting it and games being designed for it, it’s just tough to really use. I didn’t have any sound, for awhile I thought maybe I screwed up the sound or something, but it worked on Win7 so it must be okay.

This will likely be my very last build however. As I play less and less games anyway, I might as well just switch to buying laptops or something going forward.

Microsoft is trying to push business and people who value control over their PC to subscription service.

They had announce Window 10 Enterprise as a monthly subscription service

Announcing New Subscription Options for Windows 10 and Surface for Businesses

They introduce upgrade to subscription tool for normal window 10
    http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/685963/Windows-10-Microsoft-Hidden-Subscription-Plan-Operating-System

Now they remove the ability of the Window 10 Pro user to control their policy or disable window store apps or block third-party application installations or links. They do not allow that anymore.

Microsoft removes policies from Windows 10 Pro

So anyone buying window 10 pro as it has better control then the home edition is screwed.

Want control? Come subscribe a monthly fee.
