So today I’ve finally decided to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 and switch from Linux because I want a gaming machine.
I’ve tried Windows 10 quite a few times on different machines and it wasn’t that bad. The only thing I hate is Cortana and Edge (mainly because Edge has no add ons like Chrome and Firefox does.)
I also don’t care about the spying issues because I realize whether I like it or not, pretty much every operating system (aside from Linux OSes) is going to go that route. Hell, even Ubuntu is going that route with Canonical. So I couldn’t give a s~~~ with that regard.
All I want to do on my machine is practice coding and game. Those are the only things I do on my PC anyway the majority of the time.
I love Linux, but I don’t want to live in its s~~~ty world where no (good) games exist on its systems.
At least Classic Shell still works for Windows 10 as well. Which will cover all my needs.
For me it was either you have the games, or the UNIX. I chose the UNIX. I don’t play any new games at this point anyways.
It’s always been that way in UNIXland, even SGI IRIX with it’s once cutting edge hardware that cost in the six figures and up, didn’t have many games and certainly nothing of commercial quality and polish.

I definitely understand that. I also don’t play newer games that much. It’s mainly the older ones that run on emulators and a few programs that I may or may not need when I get a job in my field.
Spybot Anti Beacon supposedly disables/blocks the telemetry stuff in Windows 10.

I also play old games and emulators now, mostly. Few new games impress me anymore. Seems they are either to A. Sell you new hardware, or B. To push SJW agendas on you.
Windows 10 keeps trying to install itself onto my computer. It schedules an update time and if I don’t catch it and cancel it, it would happen. MS is pushing it like a virus with pop-up ads and everything. I refuse to use it until they stop with that bulls~~~.
I bathe in the tears of single moms.

Supposedly. But, I’ve heard of other people (mainly on Youtube) still getting the spyware s~~~ back on their PCs after they removed it. Microsoft will keep reinstalling that s~~~ no matter what as long as you’re connected to the internet.

My mom’s computer is doing the same. She can’t even shut it down without Windows 10 trying to install so she just leaves it up. I hate the way Microsoft is trying to force Windows 10 on its users.
THAT’S THE F~~~ING PROBLEM!! people stop giving a s~~~ about a privacy and this is why companies go that rout, if poeple would care companies wouldn’t dare!
And btw i use a pirated win8.1, because i respect MS so much i would never give them a coin!! plus i love windows 8.1’s start menu
Aside from Windows coming with a new machine. I’ve never paid for a copy of it either.
Windows 7 has started trying to hawk windows 10. Desperately trying to get me to upgrade. You have to wonder about the motive for pushing Windows 10 so hard.
I really wish ReactOS would get it’s act together and produce a functional Windows 2000/XP clone.
I thought valve was going full steam ahead (pun fully intended) for linux support.

Check this out, brother: http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system
It won’t completely delete the update as the little windows logo will still be active in the sidebar/taskbar/whatever you call it, but it’s passive and will not bother you anymore.

Use google and remove it from your system.

Idk.. i ignored the update notification and it disappeared after a while
Check this out. It may help to know just how MS does their tracking, and how to mitigate it.
Actions have consequences and consequences have prices. Cause and effect at work.
Anonymous3Windows 10 has forced updates. I have the Pro edition and I finally got around to, I think, disabling updates. Mostly because it recently tried to update to a new version of Windows 10 and managed to brick itself. It rolled itself back so I can still use it, but it wasted a heck of a lot of time and I’m rather disgusted with it.
Since I use Adblock, NoScript and have a third party firewall, I don’t really need MS’ “security” updates.
I am waiting on a new computer build to see if games start going to Linux. I can’t imagine myself paying for Windows at this point. I was going to buy a copy of 10 for my next build but after that latest debacle I changed my mind.
I agree with the issue with gaming on Linux. If Linux just had a better package install feature, got rid of the need to enter the password so often, and had better hard drive management/mounting, and of course better gaming, I’d just switch. But as it is, there are also a lot of good free Windows programs now that I use that Linux also doesn’t have (Sumatra PDF, MPC-HC, foobar2000, and a few other things).
In 10 years I’m pretty certain Windows will fade into obsolescence. I don’t think I can go 10 years without another computer build though. I’ll be looking in the next 2-5 years probably. Fortunately hardware advances so slowly and there are less and less good new games coming out anyway.
Even if you do not have the pro version you should be able to disable the updates
windowskey+r
->services.msc
->double click the process called windows update
->set startup type to deactivatedThat should prevent windows from installing any updates. The downside is that if you want a specific update(like a security update) you can’t download it without getting all the other s~~~, too.
And btw i use a pirated win8.1, because i respect MS so much i would never give them a coin!! plus i love windows 8.1’s start menu
I can’t stand Windows 8.1 Metro Start Menu. It’s complete s~~~ and unusable for me.
I just install Classic Shell.

Those are my main issues I have with Linux as well. If Linux fixed those things, I’d end up switching full time to a Linux based distro.

You can download software to prevent the update from happening like for example i got GWX control panel because i want to keep windows 8 on my machine.

Linux needs to figure out what it’s supposed to be. Whether that’s to be like UNIX, or to be something entirely different. Quite frankly I’m fine if it goes the entirely different route as long as UNIX clones can continue to exist unmolested as well.
One of the things stopping me from building a new computer is Windows 10. Hopefully a solution to the problem manifests itself before too much of my hardware dies of age.
