A Primer on Cat Grooming
Article provided by Catster
Some cats require more grooming than others. Generally, the more fur a cat has, the more grooming she will need. Senior cats require more grooming because they groom themselves less meticulously. If you acclimate your cat to the grooming process as early as possible, grooming can be incident-free. If your cat simply won’t allow you to groom her, find yourself a professional groomer.
Brushing
A Primer on Cat GroomingFrequent brushing is essential to keep your cat from getting hairb~~~~, which can sometimes require surgery to remove. Brush shorthaired cats at least once weekly and longhaired cats at least every other day. When the warm weather hits in the spring, you may need to groom more often as your cat sheds her winter coat.
A de-shedding tool is especially effective at removing hair, but care should be taken when using it. Don’t start by enthusiastically raking your cat’s backbone. Gently stroke her, then draw the brush across the very top of her coat without catching any hair in the teeth or bristles.
Don’t assume that what works for one will work for all. You may have to try several different brush or comb types before finding one that works well on a particular cat.
Removing Mats
Mats are painful to your cat and can restrict movement, so they should be removed as soon as you notice them. If you brush your longhaired cat every other day, it will obviate the need to remove mats. But inevitably, every longhaired cat will develop them, and you’ll need to be adept at removing them without harming your cat.The safest way to remove mats is with clippers. Have a helper hold the cat still while you shave away the mat.
If your cat has a number of mats, it’s much easier and safer to take her to a professional groomer.
Bathing
Some cats rarely need baths; others, like members of the Sphynx cat breed, need weekly baths.Bathing is easier if the cat has been accustomed to bathing since an early age. If she is not a frequent bather, you may need to prepare for battle
For specific advice on how to give your cat a bath read How to Survive Giving Your Cat a Bath.
Nail Clipping
As a general rule, you should trim your cat’s nails at least monthly. This procedure is best done with a helper who holds the cat in his lap while you trim the claws. If your cat isn’t wild about this procedure, wrap her in a towel to immobilize her, exposing one paw at a time.As you look at the claw, you’ll notice a triangular pink area, which is the quick. Avoid cutting into this area, as doing so will cause bleeding and pain. To start, hold a paw and press the toe pad to extend the claw. Talk to your cat in a calm, soothing voice while you clip the tip of each nail. Clip straight up with a vertical cut, not diagonally across the nail. This will keep the nail from splitting.
Many cats only need their front claws trimmed, so don’t feel you need to trim the rear claws if they don’t require it. If you snip the quick, don’t panic. Use a styptic to stop the bleeding, and calm your cat with a low soothing voice.
Ear Cleaning
Check your cat’s ears twice a month for dirt and wax buildup (and ticks if your cat spends time outdoors). Some breeds produce more wax than others and require more frequent cleaning. To clean your cat’s ears, enlist the aid of a helper to restrain her. Wrapping her in a towel will help. Clean the ear lobe using a cotton ball to gently remove dirt, wax, and debris.
Only clean the parts of the ear that are visible. If there appears to be debris inside the ear canal, have a vet remove it.

Cats are extremely clean animals, but even the most fastidious cat will benefit from a little help with grooming, especially if they have long hair. Grooming your cat is also an excellent way to bond. Grooming is also a good opportunity to check for any skin and coat irregularities.
Grooming your catIt’s a good idea to get your cat used to being brushed and combed from an early age. This will prevent irritating knots and remove dead hair. Do this regularly and not only will it keep your cat’s coat clean and healthy, it’ll help reduce hairb~~~~ forming.
How often? If your cat is longhaired, you should comb her once a day, or at least a, couple of times a week. Short- haired cats only need to be brushed once a week.
What you’ll need. There are specially designed grooming tools for longhaired cats, but at the very least you’ll need a good brush and comb. If your cat is shorthaired, a veterinarian recommended brush is all you’ll need.
Brushing. If your cat’s fur isn’t too tangled just give her coat a good brush. This shouldn’t take longer than five to 15 minutes. Most cats love to be brushed, but if yours doesn’t, let her go and try again later. Longhaired cats’ fur sometimes gets matted. If you notice tangled masses of knotted hair in your cat’s coat, you’ll need to make time for some careful, patient brushing. Holding on to the fur just below the knot while you brush will prevent the hair from pulling. If your cat’s coat is really unmanageable, you could consider professional grooming. Also consider finding the right nutrition to help reduce shedding.
Bath time. Shorthaired cats do not need to be bathed, unless they are very dirty or have allergies. But for longhaired breeds, the occasional bath will help keep her coat in good condition and prevent a build up of grease. Your vet will be happy to advise you how to bath your cat and will recommend a special cat shampoo.
Prepare for the bath. Most cats don’t really like getting wet, but if you have the shampoo and towel nearby, bath-time will be quicker and easier. To make things even easier, ask someone to help — then one can hold the cat while the other does the washing.
First of all thoroughly brush your cat’s coat to get rid of knots. This will prevent them from shrinking and tightening in the water.
If you’re washing your cat in the bath, run the water before you bring your cat in. The less noise and motion there is during bath-time, the better.
Fill the bath just high enough to reach your cat’s belly. And make sure you test the water to make sure it’s not too hot. You don’t have to use a bathtub — a couple of bowls will do just as well. You can use one for the soapy water and the other for rinsing.
When the bath’s ready, bring your cat into the room and shut the door — you don’t want a soapy cat running around the house! You may want to put cotton b~~~~ in your cat’s ears to help keep water out. Then, gently lower her in to the water and reassure her with soothing words and constant physical contact.
Gently wet the fur with a cup or wet flannel, but don’t pour it directly onto your cat’s head or try to submerge her.
Once you start washing your cat she might object by howling. Don’t worry, this is entirely normal and your cat is fine, just a little unnerved.
Gently lather the shampoo into the fur, being careful around the face, ears and eyes. When you have finished shampooing, rinse the fur thoroughly as any residue may irritate her skin. If you’re using a detachable showerhead to rinse your cat keep it close to her body to minimize noise and spray.Wrap up warm. As soon as you take your cat out of the water, wrap her in a towel and gently pat the fur dry. If your cat has long hair it’s particularly important to be gentle to avoid knots and tangles. You won’t get her completely dry with a towel, so make sure she stays inside until she’s completely dried off. And never be tempted to use a hairdryer as the hot air could burn your cat’s skin.
Trimming nails. Cats scratch to keep their claws trim, but you’ll need to help out too. Make sure you get your cat used to it while she’s young and it’ll be easier in the long-term. Ask your vet to demonstrate the correct technique and the correct clippers to use.

Cat Grooming Basics
Cats are neat freaks. In fact, if you’re a cat owner, you know firsthand that your cat is a fastidious groomer. After all, it seems to spend most of its life either sleeping or grooming!
But as gung-ho as your cat is about keeping itself groomed and clean, the truth is that it could still use a bit of help from you.
Grooming is about more than just keeping your cat looking good. Grooming your cat on a regular basis will also help you to keep an eye on its health. And grooming your cat can even help to prevent feline health issues such as digestive problems caused by hairb~~~~. Regular grooming can also help to improve the health of your cat’s skin and coat.
GETTING STARTEDIf you’re already a cat owner, this probably goes without saying: Don’t just snatch up your cat one day and commence to grooming if you’ve never groomed the cat before. The outcome is likely to be unpleasant for the both of you.
Instead, slowly accustom the cat to the process of grooming.
Pick a time when the cat is relaxed and content – after eating, perhaps. Then start with short grooming sessions of maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Pet and praise the cat as you’re grooming, and maybe even offer a treat at the end of the session. And if the cat begins to show signs that it’s none too happy about what’s happening, stop for now. You can try it again later.
With time, the cat will become accustomed to the process, and will likely come to enjoy it.
BRUSHING BASICSRegular brushing offers benefits such as dead hair and dirt, and removing or preventing mats and tangles. But do it right, or you’ll end up with a cantankerous kitty on your hands!
Always brush in the direction that the hair naturally lays, never against the ‘grain.’ And be extra gentle around the belly and chest.
For shorthaired cats:
Start with a fine-toothed metal comb. Run it through the cat’s fur from head to tail tip. Watch for small pepper-like specks that could indicate the presence of cat fleas.
Use a bristle or soft rubber brush next to remove loose hair. For longhaired cats:
Start with a wide-toothed comb to remove debris that may be caught in the cat’s coat. Carefully untangle any knots.
Next use a wire brush or a bristle brush to remove loose hair.
Consider using a toothbrush to brush around the cat’s face. And if you encounter matting in the cat’s fur, don’t try to cut it out; one or both of you may end up getting hurt.
Brushing twice a week should be plenty for most shorthaired cats, while a longhaired cat may need brushing every day.
BATH TIME (SAY IT ISN’T SO)Does the idea of giving your cat a bath send shivers of fear down your spine? Understandable! It’s well known that most cats aren’t particularly fond of water. You may even have been witness to a vivid demonstration of this fact in times past.
Luckily, cats don’t often need the help of a full-blown bath.
But on occasion, your cat’s coat might become sticky or dirty to a degree that the old tongue-bath just isn’t going to cut it. So you’ll have to get involved. Fortunately, though, bath time doesn’t have to be a time of terror for the both of you – if you do it right:
Start by making the water temperature pleasant. It should be warm – not hot, and not cold.
Use a shampoo that’s made specifically for use with cats, and labeled accordingly.
Use a sink or tub in which you’ve placed a rubber bath mat, filled to a depth of just 3 or 4 inches.
Gently wet the cat down using a spray hose, but DO NOT spray or pour water directly on the cat’s head – you don’t want to spray or pour into the cat’s eyes, ears or nose. If you don’t have a spray hose, use an unbreakable pitcher.
Start at the cat’s head, and gently work in the shampoo from head to tail.
Rinse gently but thoroughly, making sure that all the shampoo is rinsed out. Again, be sure to avoid spraying or pouring water directly on the cat’s head.
Gently pat dry with a large towel. And one last tip: If your cat’s nails need clipping, do it BEFORE bath time!
PEDICURE, PLEASEGetting your cat to accept having it’s claws trimmed by you really shouldn’t be too difficult, IF you approach it properly.
Start out by spending some time just training your cat to be comfortable and accepting of having her feet handled. Begin to massage its feet on a daily basis. Do that by running your hand along its leg, and then very gently pressing with your thumb on the pad of each toe, causing the claw to extend. After a week or two the cat will likely become comfortable with its daily foot massage.
Once the cat is comfortable with the massaging, it’s OK to clip. Use a quality, sharp clipper or nail scissors specifically designed for use on cats. Cut parallel to the flat of the claw, and clip off only the white tip. Be VERY careful to avoid the quick, which usually appears as a pinkish area that you can see through the translucent claw.
IT’S NICE TO BE NEEDEDCompared to certain other pets, cats are relatively low maintenance – a nice perk for cat lovers. But like all of us, your cat could use a helping hand now and then. Independent creature though your cat may be, it still needs your help in remaining happy and healthy.
And that’s kind of a perk, too, wouldn’t you agree?

How to groom your cat
Most cats will spend a significant part of their day grooming.
See our You Tube Channel for our video on how to groom a cat
Their bodies are incredibly supple and can bend and flex to enable them to reach all parts with ease. The cat’s tongue is covered with backward-pointing spines, perfectly designed to groom coats effectively, removing loose hair and dirt.
Domestic cat’s fur is generally made up of three types of hair: down, awn and guard. However, some pedigrees have their coats made up of a different proportion of these three types of hair giving them their distinct coat types. Moulting will occur, to some extent, all year round and grooming helps to remove the loose hair, much of which is be swallowed. Such hair becomes impacted and either passes through the cat’s digestive system or is vomited up as a hairball.
Grooming performs several important functions for your cat:
Removes loose hair and smooths the coat to help insulate the body more efficiently
Regulates temperature in hot weather by spreading saliva across the coat that subsequently evaporates, cooling the cat down
Keeps the coat waterproof by stimulating glands at the base of the hairs
Spreads sebum along the coat, producing Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight which is subsequently ingested by the cat
Spreads your cat’s own scent across its body
Removes parasites
Maintains strong social bonds when cats groom each otherGrooming your cat, irrespective of its coat type, has a number of benefits:
Improves muscle tone
Stimulates the skin to produce oils, giving the coat a healthy shine
Your cat will remove a large amount of hair itself when grooming but if you get involved on a daily basis, particularly when your cat is moulting, you can remove the majority of the hair and prevent the formation of hairb~~~~
Provides the opportunity to give your cat a quick physical check, looking at ears, eyes and mouth and checking for fleas, ticks, ear mites or any lumps or bumps
The whole process can be very therapeutic for both of you and should be a positive way of reinforcing the bond between youWhen you first acquire a kitten you should get it accustomed to being groomed from a very early age. Gradually build up the amount of time you spend grooming your kitten until it is quite happy to allow you to brush it. Eventually a lot of kittens may enjoy being groomed all over and will come to see it as part of its daily routine. To begin with, some kittens and also adult cats may be much more tolerant to be handled and groomed than others, and it is important that grooming and (most importantly) general handling tolerance is built up gradually, without it being a negative experience for either you or the cat. A cat should never be ‘forcibly’ groomed or stroked without the option to escape if they are finding the experience stressful. When, as a kitten, your cat is used to being handled it makes it easier for the veterinary surgeon to carry out an examination and the experience will be a lot less stressful for your cat. Your cat will know what to expect and there will be no nasty surprises.
Grooming shorthaired catsYou will need some equipment, such as a fine-toothed flea/tick comb, a bristle brush, a rubber grooming pad or a mitten. Always begin your grooming session when your cat is relaxed and happy. Plan to groom your cat at least once a week, using the flea comb first to check for flea excreta (tiny black comma-shaped dirt that runs red if a drop of water is added to it). If you find any, speak to your veterinary surgeon about effective flea control. You can use your fingers to loosen the dead hairs in your cat’s coat by massaging against the hair growth in the direction of its head. Gently brush or comb your cat’s hair, using strokes towards the tail starting from the head region, in the direction that the hair grows. Use the bristle brush to sweep up the coat in the direction of the head if your cat will tolerate it, and then smooth it down again (many cats might not like this bit if they are not used to being brushed in this way, and some may just find the sensation too unpleasant). This will bring all the loose hairs to the surface so that you can then use the rubber grooming glove or pad from head to tail, removing dead hair and stimulating the blood supply to the skin. Any loose hairs lying on the surface of the coat can be removed with a damp cotton or rubber glove to produce the final glossy finish. These sessions should be as short or long as the cat is comfortable with, and should be ended before the cat shows any signs of discomfort. They should also aim to finish on a positive note, with treats and praise.
Grooming longhaired catsThe equipment you will need should include a wide-toothed comb and a rubber mitten or pad. Longhaired cats need to be groomed at least once a day but careful attention should be paid to the current tolerance level of the cat and time spent grooming should not exceed this. Again, as for short haired cats, always choose a time when your cat is relaxed and happy to begin grooming. Massage the skin thoroughly before grooming commences by gently rubbing with your fingers against the hair growth from tail to head. As the hair is lifted check for flea excreta (see above). Using the wide-toothed comb, groom from head to tail to remove dead hair and take particular care with areas under your cat’s ‘armpits’ and between its hind legs, as the skin is very thin here and extremely sensitive. It is also an area of friction where knots are common. If you do come across a knot (known as a matt), tease it apart gently using your fingers. This needs patience as you work slowly from the root towards the end of the hair. Don’t be tempted to use scissors; it is extremely difficult to see where the skin ends and the hair starts when it gets really matted and you will inevitably cut your cat at some point. Another common area where matts can form is between the toes and pads, so check each time you groom and tease out any accumulated debris gently. Once this process is completed, use the rubber mitten or pad to remove more dead hair and do a final sweep over the coat with a damp cotton or rubber glove to remove any loose hairs that remain. Finish off with the comb if your cat is being patient and enjoying the attention. If grooming is a struggle, it should be stopped. Start again at a time when your cat is relaxed and aim to have smaller goals for each grooming session, these being goals that your cat can easily tolerate. Always reward relaxed behaviour with praise and food treats throughout the grooming sessions. There are numerous grooming products on the market, particularly for longhaired cats, for example rakes, slickers and detangle sprays, many of which claim to make grooming as simple and safe as possible. What works for you and your cat can be a very personal thing so it’s worth investing in a range of equipment until you find the combination that does the job and causes the least amount of stress for all concerned.
DemattingThrough daily grooming, cats should not become matted. Preventative grooming is key. However, if a cat comes into your care that exhibits matts, it is important to remember that these can be extremely uncomfortable (put a clump of your hair in a tight elastic band that constantly pulls at the scalp and you will an idea of what this feels like). You may find a professional cat groomer who would still be able to groom manually but most severe matts need to be shaved off by your vet. This will require at the very least sedation but, in reality, it is usually done under general anaesthetic. You will then find that your cat will end up with fur on his tail, head and lower legs and nowhere else until it all grows back.
Bathing your catIf your cat is healthy there is no reason to give your cat a bath. Most do not tolerate it well.
Key behaviours to look out for when grooming or stroking catsThe following are some of the more subtle indications that the cat may be feeling uncomfortable. Interaction should be stopped when any of these signs are visible.
Skin rippling or twitching
Tail swishing, thumping or twitching at the end
Sharp turn of cat’s head to face your hand or the brush
Cat suddenly freezes or becomes tense
Cat’s ears flick or rotate backwards
Cat swallows or licks lips
Cat’s shakes its head
Cat performs a short lasting but rapid burst of grooming to body

Cat Grooming Tips
Cats clean themselves, why should I have groom them? We see our cats spending a lot of time each day licking and cleaning themselves. There are various reasons as to why your cat still needs your grooming assistance to stay healthy and happy. Grooming accomplishes much more than just making your cat’s coat look nice and shiny. It also stimulates circulation, removes loose hair, and helps prevent matting.
Regular Groomings
Regular grooming will also provide you with the opportunity to spend more “quality time” with your cat, combing, brushing and generally bonding with him. You will also be able to check your cat closely for any problems while grooming as well. Move the hair aside and examine the skin closely for signs of fleas and ticks. Also check for any unusual problems with the coat such as mats, tangles, skin irritations, etc. Should you notice matting, try to gently comb the mat out but never use scissors to cut out the mat. Cat’s skin is very thin and can be cut easily resulting in a trip to your vet and daily treatments to heal the wound. If you are not able to remove the mat, schedule a grooming appointment with Cat Connection to give your kitty the professional care and attention he deserves. Learn where he likes to be combed and brushed, and where he doesn’t. Cats have sensitive ears that may need to be groomed a little more gently and carefully than other areas. By paying special attention to these locations, you will help make your cat more comfortable while being groomed, and he will not resist future grooming sessions.
Cat bathing is also an important factor in your cats health and coat maintenance. Cat Connection recommends bathing for short-haired cats at least 2 times a year and bathing for medium/long-haired cats at least 4 times a year. Most cats do not like to be bathed and that is why we are here. Our groomers work with cats only and do not use restraints or complete sedation.
We pay special attention to each cat and do not rush the grooming process. All cats must be brought in at their scheduled time to ensure enough time to groom your cat properly with as little stress as possible. When making your grooming reservation at Cat Connection, please be honest on the condition of your cats coat. We normally book all reservations 2-3 weeks out (yes, we are very popular!). It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to maintain your cats coat, therefore do not neglect proper brushing and combing for 2 weeks just because you have a grooming appointment with us. A cat’s coat will not get in a complete matted stage in 2 weeks unless the cat has been neglected.
Kittens
Grooming is also important for kittens. We see cats constantly licking and grooming their kittens to help keep their coats clean. Your kitten will also need some help with his grooming. By starting with short grooming sessions at a young age, your kitten will become accustomed to the grooming procedure and will be less likely to resist your grooming efforts when he gets older. Constantly reassure your kitten in gentle tones while brushing and combing. This will, in time, make him accustomed to being handled and brushed. Eventually he will be quite comfortable and will look forward to these grooming sessions with you.
Health
Regular grooming is essential to your cat’s health and well-being. Regular combing and brushing will keep the coat clean and healthy, stimulate the skin, and allow the natural oils to circulate to the coat. It will also help to prevent hairb~~~~, which are the result of loose hair being picked up by the cat’s tongue and then swallowed. These hairs sometimes accumulate in the cat’s stomach forming hairb~~~~ which can be harmful to the cat. Grooming will also allow you to check for potentially serious problems. Check for areas of hair loss, inflammation, unusual tenderness or lumps under the skin. Constant scratching in a particular area may also be an indication of a problem. Check with your veterinarian about any unusual problems you may find.As cats get older, it is often difficult for them to properly groom themselves (especially medium/long-haired cats). It is very important for you to pay close attention to your cat and make every effort to assist your kitty in keeping a clean and healthy coat.
Frequency
How often your cat needs to be combed/brushed depends upon several factors: type and length of coat, weather conditions, time of year, etc. Generally speaking, shorthaired cats should be combed/brushed about twice a week, while longhaired cats should be combed/brushed daily. You will soon find the grooming frequency that provides the best results for your cat. It is important to establish and adhere to a regular grooming schedule. These sessions should be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. Be sure that you allow time to provide proper grooming, and are not likely to be interrupted.
Combing
Comb carefully in the direction of hair growth to smooth the coat and remove any minor knots or tangles. Never use scissors to remove mats as this is very dangerous and could injure your cat. For longhaired cats, begin with a wide tooth comb and follow up with a fine tooth comb. After combing, use a shedding blade to remove any loose or dead hair in the coat.
Brushing
Brush in the direction of hair growth with a wire slicker brush. This will help detangle any matted fur and remove dead hair and debris. After brushing the coat until it is thoroughly clean, you can follow with the cat brush. Use long, flowing strokes to bring out the beautiful luster of your cat’s coat. A grooming glove can also be used after brushing. It will remove any remaining debris, massage the skin and distribute your cat’s natural oils resulting in a shiny, healthy coat.
Nail TrimmingRegular nail trimming is important to your cat’s health and well being. Never use ordinary scissors to trim your cat’s nails; they may injure the cat. Use trimmers that are specifically designed for cats. Hold the paw with gentle firmness and squeeze the paw at the base of the nail. This will cause the nail to protrude. Cut off the tip of the nail with a single stroke, being careful to stop short of the quick, the pink blood vessel inside the nail. Cutting into the quick will hurt your cat and cause some bleeding. If possible, follow up with the nail file, filing toward the tip to smooth the cut edge.
If you are uncomfortable with trimming your cat’s nails, you can bring them into Cat Connection and we will trim them for only $10.00. Just give us a call and let us know you are on the way. We can also show you how to properly trim kitties nails in the future.
Food and Nutrition
Diet is especially important to your cats health. A combination of proper diet and grooming will make a huge difference in your cat’s well-being. Cat Connection only carries premium cat food that is specifically designed for every cat’s needs. Does kitty have a problem with Hairb~~~~? Shedding? Vomiting Food? These are common problems with cats. Please stop in or give us a call and we will be happy to help you select the right food for your kitty’s needs.

How To Groom A Cat With The Right Tools: The Best Cat Brush, Clippers, and Nail Trimmers!
Cats are cleaning machines. They spend up to 50 percent of their waking hours hard at work grooming.
They rely on their tongue and teeth for more than affectionate nibbling of their owners’ noses.
Felines spend so much time grooming because grooming is essential to kitty well-being.
Sometimes your furry friend needs help taking care of her fur.
Senior cats and long-haireds have lots to deal with when it comes to personal care. Even short-haireds in their prime benefit from regular grooming. Regular brushing and nail trimming paired with a quality cat food and regular check-ups keeps your cat active and healthy.
Here is some advice about how to groom a cat at home and the tools you need to do it.
Cat Grooming 101Cats groom to clean themselves, to maintain body temperature, and to relax. They groom each other to show affection. This is why many enjoy a gentle brushing.
Start grooming your pet at a young age to get her accustomed to the ritual. Grooming is a great way to bond with your kitty while also keeping her healthy and comfortable. Grooming your feline is simple. It just requires patience, affection, and the right tools.
Long-haireds have twice as much grooming to do as short haireds.
Your long haired needs to spend more time untangling mats and distributing coat oils. This does not leave him much time for fun activities like hunting mice and insects or lying on your lap.
Help him out by brushing his coat once a day. This brushing keeps your him mat free and comfortable and reduces the amount of shedding hair left on your furniture.
Short-haireds also enjoy a gentle brushing. It helps them get rid of dead fur and debris.
Grooming also allows you to keep an eye out for other health problems. You are more likely to notice a cut or sensitive area if you handle your cat daily.
Brush your short haired once a week to keep her coat shiny and your furniture free from fine hair.
Using The Best Cat Brush To Groom Your KittyThe purpose of a brush is to remove dead hair and untangle any mats. Brushing is a soothing experience for cats. Always brush with the direction of the fur – not against.
Be gentle. Your cat won’t enjoy a rough brushing or brushing that pulls his fur. The best cat brush depends on his coat.
Short-haireds benefit from brushes that are designed to remove shedding fur. These brushes usually have a fine toothed comb.
#1. DakPets Brush (EDITOR’S CHOICE)dakpets furblaster
This insanely popular tool is an excellent choice for short, medium and long-haired cats. It comes with an unbreakable guarantee and is recommended by veterinarians and professional groomers alike.
It’s a very affordable tool and one that your furry friend will be begging you to use day and night.
I use this one right now, and have for awhile, plus it’s got an unbelievable amount of customer reviews across the web. Normally I don’t care about that kind of thing, but seriously it’s crazy. I suggest picking yours up from Chewy.
It’s tough to say too much about a product like this because it’s “just” a brush, but it’s first up in our list of tools for a reason. Easy to clean, easy to use, cats absolutely adore it, well priced…I mean this is bordering on a MUST-have item for every cat household.

#2. The Furminator Brushfurminator brush
The Furminator is another similarly priced shedding tool that promises to reduce shedding by up to 90%.
Shedding blades prevent excessive hairball development. This brushing saves you from trips to the vet and from stepping in a hairball on your way to the bathroom.
The Furminator is an excellent tool for long haired and short haired cats as it reaches the undercoat as well as the outer. Also insanely popular, it’s hard to go wrong with this or our first recommendation. Another slam dunk.
Honestly these tools are almost identical, it’s just that I personally prefer the one I recommended above. This is fine in a pinch, but the other one just “feels” better while I’m using it, you know?

#3. Safari Cat BrushSafari cat brush
A low-cost alternative is the Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Cats. It’s a it cheaper than the others we suggest, and but still has the added benefit of a self-cleaning mechanism.
The pins that form the brush retract, allowing you to remove the accumulated hair with ease. The teeth are slightly longer than the Furminator. These long teeth make the Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush ideal for longer hair.
Long-haireds also benefit from a wide tooth comb in addition to a shedding blade. This helps keep mats and tangles under control and is effective on long outer coats.

Best Cat Clippers For Shaving, Trimming, and Clipping Your KittySometimes mats get out of hand. Cats have a knack for getting into trouble despite their supposed nine lives. Clippers are useful for eliminating messy fur that cannot be cleaned up or brushed out.
Long haireds that have a hard time maintaining their coats benefit from a clip. Overweight kitties that cannot reach their whole bodies have a hard time keeping fur clean and may require a sanitary clip.
Clipping at home can be dangerous. Even clippers with guards can cut your kitty. Contact your veterinarian or groomer to get this done, unless you definitely know what you’re doing.
#1. Wahl Pet Pro Clippers (EDITOR’S CHOICE)
If you have the skills to do this at home, consider clippers by Wahl. The Wahl brand is tried, tested, and true, and has been around forever. This is actually an affordable option, too, and it’s high quality.
Wahl makes some of the best cat clippers on the market.
A plug-in model like this is nice because the motor won’t slow down or cut out like a battery model, which can sometimes cause it to pull fur, which is a good way to make sure your furball never lets you do this again!

Best Cat Nail Trimmers For Trimming ClawsCats have sharp claws that are designed to help them hunt and defend themselves. Their claws grow quickly and require regular trimming or wearing down to keep from turning into daggers.
The wild ancestors of domestic cats and today’s feral cats wear their claws down over the course of their daily life. Hunting and climbing keep the claws from growing too long. Domestic cats rely on your furniture to achieve the same purpose.
Cats scratch to shed the dead outer layer on their claws. They scratch to mark territory. They knead your thighs to show affection. Scratching is a nice stretch for them and is an important part of their behavior. In short, scratching is good for your cat.
Your curtains, couch, and tender skin do not agree.
Trimming claws does not eliminate scratching. It does alleviate some of the pain and damage.
Pair regular nail trims with a good scratch post and your kitty and your upholstery will thank you. You can also try some nail cover caps if scratching is getting out of hand.
Just, whatever you do, don’t declaw!
Trimming your cat’s nails is simple.
Most have clear nails. You can see the pink quick encased in the clear, outer layer. This makes it easy to avoid cutting the nail quick and causing pain.
Start trimming the nails from an early age to avoid painful wrestling matches in later years. Kitten claws are extremely sharp, and kittens often do not have the use of those claws totally under their control. They get caught on fabrics and cause kittens discomfort. Keeping kitten claws nice and short saves you and the kitten pain and trouble.
Cats do not need to hate having their nails trimmed.
Reward her for good behavior by tempting her with her favorite treats during trimming time. Find a treat she cannot resist and reserve this treat especially for nail trimming. She will then associates this delicious delicacy with the necessary evil of a nail trim.
Familiarize her with the trimming process by first massaging her paws. Massage her paws while she is sitting on your lap. Repeatedly touching her paws desensitizes her to the sensation of having a human handle her feet.
Trim her nails during a relaxed time. Don’t decide to trim right after a stressful event or in front of another pet. Trimming her nails is a vulnerable time for your cat and you as her owner must respect this. Otherwise both of you could get hurt.
Trimming is relatively simple. Press gently on the pad below the desired claw. This extends the claw. Look for the pink quick. Trim the nail to a few millimetres below the quick (BEFORE the pink part, not INTO the pink part). Err on the side of caution. Cutting the quick is painful and causes bleeding. Release the paw and give a treat after each nail.
Right, so, now you know how to trim your cat’s nails.
Make sure you choose the best cat nail clippers to get the job done. They’re not like dog nails, so get a tool that’s specifically designed for them.
#1. Gripsoft Cat Nail Clippers by JW Pet (EDITOR’S CHOICE)cat nail trimmers
This is super affordable, super high quality, and is designed by veterinarians for use in vet offices and in your home.
It’s professional grade and therefore highly durable. The rubber grip prevents your hands from slipping as you trim, and the simple design works just like scissors.
Stainless steel blades are long lasting and stay sharp, and they come with a 3 year guarantee. For just a few bucks, this is a no brainer, and they’ve worked fine for me for a long time.

Cat Grooming, Bathing, Clipping, Brushing Services and Tips
Cats typically take care of daily grooming by themselves. If you’ve ever seen a cat lying in the sun grooming itself, it can be quite calming to observe the meticulous routine. Cats instinctively groom themselves to banish any odors that may be noticed by other animals, especially predators. Cats are also able to maintain a healthy-looking coat by daily grooming and distributing natural oils to keep their coats clean and shiny.
The Benefits and Importance of Cat GroomingWhile cats do a good job with basic grooming on their own, there are a number of grooming related items that they need help with. These include:
A weekly flea check
Noticing mats in your cat’s fur before they become unmanageable
Attending to any dermatologic problems by scheduling a vet appointment
Keeping tabs on whether your cat has gained or lost weight
Checking to make sure your cat’s nails are trimmed
Once a week while brushing, be sure to look for irregularities of the skin.
Brushing is also a positive way to interact with your cat.If you notice irregularities or have questions we would encourage you to schedule a veterinary appointment.
Cat Grooming Services Offered At Metairie Small Animal HospitalFor the cat who does need some extra grooming care, the veterinary grooming services we offer include:
Ear cleaning
Cleaning soiled fur to reduce odors
Trimming nails
Medical bathing treatments
Thorough brushing, especially for long-haired cats who are prone to fur mattingCat Bathing
From a veterinary perspective, cat bathing is rarely recommended and typically cats don’t require baths. Some cats can become stressed by bathing. Typically, the only time you may need to bathe your cat is if it gets into something that has to be promptly removed from the fur. If this is the case, here is what we suggest:
Use a mild shampoo
Keep the water temperature warm, not hot or cold
Perform the bathing in a small area, to minimize the chances for your cat to run off
Before you get started, know how to handle your cat properlyOf course, if dermatological conditions arise, then bathing with a prescribed cleanser may be recommended.
Cat Claw TrimmingTrimming your cat’s claws can be challenging. One of the best and safest ways to trim your cat’s nails is to be informed before you begin. Perhaps watching a video will teach you how to hold your cat comfortably while showing you step by step how to get the job done quickly, without causing stress to your cat. Specialized cat nail clippers can be used, however it is extremely important to understand that most of what looks like the cat’s nail actually contains the cat’s “quick” which delivers blood supply to the nail. As the cat’s nail gets longer, so does the quick. This is why trimming longer cat nails typically results in the nail bleeding. However, as the tip of the nail is trimmed, the quick will recede. Therefore, proper trimming of cat’s nails involves trimming the very tip of the nail and then waiting a few days for the quick to recede, then trimming the very tip of the nail again. This can be repeated several times on longer nails until the quick recedes enough that you are able to trim the nail to the proper length. However, even once you understand the procedure for trimming your cat’s nails little by little, the trickiest part may be simply handling the cat in a way that you will be able to trim the nail without causing undue trauma to the cat and potentially earning yourself some cat scratches along the way. When in doubt, cat claw trimming is a task that is best left to professionals.
Cat Hair CutsMost veterinarians typically do not recommend cutting your cat’s fur. For some long-haired breeds whose fur becomes matted or hopelessly tangled, those tangles may need to be cut out. Also there are a few styles such as the “lion’s cut” which have become popular among owners of long haired cats. However, these cuts require trimmers that can make cats very uneasy, startled and unnecessarily traumatized. These are services that are best left in the hands of professionals and may require sedation.
