What is your favorite handgun caliber of all time?
Why? is it fun to shoot? is it the most deadly? is it ballisticly superior?

.45 ACP. It is classic. The bullet is slow compared to other bullets, but the bullet is reliable for not jamming. The bullet is designed for automatic and semi-automatic firearms.

If the bullet does not penetrate, the bullet will knock a full grown man down.

The powder-load is respectable. In a 1911 series model the .45 ACP does not much kick and the muzzle flash is not that bad.

one of my favorite guns is the HK 45.

It shoots like a kitten because of its fullsize frame.
I personally do not think that the .45s slow speed is a detriment, it means you can suppress it with standard ammo and not have a sonic boom

For me it all depends on the application.

    Range target practice – indoor/outdoor/plinking/varmint control – .22 cal
Its lighter, I can carry more ammo/mags on me, readily available supplies, still deadly though.

    Outdoor ranges- general purpose
    I prefer 9mm 135gr due to familiarity/experience/skill. I haven’t met a living critter yet that I haven’t been able to put down with a 9mm.

Terror factor – I’d go with .45 or .50 cal
Most of these types of pistols scream “I mean f~~~ing business”.
Heavy, fear inducing pistols, with a rather loud report, more expensive rounds.

Mind you, in Canada all pistols are restricted firearms.
Owning one (all restricted firearms) allows all “law enforcement” agencies to legally enter your home without warrant to ensure you are storing them in accordance with the law.

wow I didn’t know that about Canada, that really sucks.

and yes it shoots like kitten, its mass and recoil system make it very soft shooting. If the hearing protection act gets passed (please God) im sticking a suppressor on it asap.

Stating a preference for a particular bullet caliber is like having a preference in screwdriver sizes.

Well my favorite screwdriver size is the 3/8″ phillips. It’s pretty useful whenever I need to screw in 3/8″ phillips screws. I’ve got a nice one with a soft rubber grip and magnetized head. It’s pretty much ideal.

    Except when it isn’t.

I disagree, its something nonpolitical that we can all talk about and have fun with. Also different rounds have different characteristics, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many of them.

My personal favorite in an autoloader is 40 super.
It is ballisticly the closest you can get to a 44 mag in an autoloader without going to .50 caliber and making a size tradeoff

I have a bursa thunder.380 that has shot placement unmatched by my Glock, Colt 1911 & SW.40. It’s the one I conceal carry. It may not be a heavy hitter or carry enough rounds, but I never miss with it. My guess if I need more than 8 bullets I’m f~~~ed anyway cause that’s a war not a robbery or a carjacking. I get plenty of range time to know what works best for me. Alos it’s a very safe gun with lots of features including a built in key lock and magazine safety.

I disagree, its something nonpolitical that we can all talk about and have fun with.

This is one of the most contentious arguments going in the realm of handgun ownership. People get VERY heated about, say, discussions of the relative merits of 9mm vs .45acp and it leads to more strife than it’s worth.

Also different rounds have different characteristics, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many of them.

That is precisely my point. There are so many different platforms for different purposes and situations that asking generally “which one is your favorite” is nearly meaningless.

How about a slightly more specific question like this:

“Hey guys… I have a concealed carry permit and prefer to carry a Walther P380 in an outside the belt fitted polymer (non-Serpa) holster. I’m curious to know what other people use as their concealed carry piece and why. Specifically I’m interested in the choices you made with regard to size and holstering options for concealment purposes, how you decided the caliber vs. capacity question, what situations you believe you might find yourself having to draw in and how that effected your decisions.

I know each of us have a unique set of considerations when making these choices and i’m interested in finding out if there are any patterns with regard to urban vs. rural environment, socio-economic status vs. potential threat profile and so on. I’d appreciate your input.”

I always leave things open ended. the point is not to start a 9 vs 45 debate and more hear peoples opinions and see where they lead.

My brother and I had this discussion last month. He works emergancy paramedic in a trauma ward and said 9mm really give him work because every 9mm handgun wound he saw would live. Seemed like a .22 and every other caliber would kill, but no one died from a 9mm. Not making an argument here he was just noticing a trend.

now see that’s intriguing. I wonder if that is because it is currently the most prolific round and many gang bangers are using it with ball and not defense ammunition.

My favorite is the p226 mk25 9mm too heavy for carry.
I like 9 cause its cheap, readly avaiable,

    For the daily carry I use a taurus pt111 9mm 12+1.
I use the N82 tactial Inside the wasitband. very comfortable
Just need to pratice your holster draws. Which you should be doing anyways if you plan on carrying.
And for the Ammo I use 147gr golden sabers.

I have nothing agaisnt the 45 acp. just my preference.
Now 40sw I do. I hate the recoil, The snap upward. Rented one at the range and after the first shot. Nope dont like it.

I used to hate the 40 Smith & Wesson because I had originally rented a Glock from the range. However after shooting it in a Walther P99 I changed my mind. The Recoil was not only manageable but Pleasant and it had a far superior trigger
