What Are Your Beliefs About Masculinity And Attitudes Toward Seeking MH Services

I am a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program at Northeastern University. I am conducting research, as part of my dissertation, on men’s beliefs about masculinity as well as on their attitudes toward seeking mental health services. Please participate if you are interested and do pass along the request to other men who you believe might want to share their thoughts. Any help in completing this project would be GREATLY appreciated. More specific information, as well as the link to my survey, can be found below.

If you are a male aged 18 to 64, I would like to invite you to participate in an anonymous online survey examining your beliefs about masculinity and your attitudes toward seeking professional psychological services (e.g., individual psychotherapy). The survey is part of a research study aimed at better understanding how men think about what it means to be a man, and how such perspectives might influence attitudes toward help seeking. Its not masculinity that prevents men to get help. It is the demand from others, specially WOMEN and SOCIETY in general that DEMANDS men not to seek help that prevent this. And when men DO get help, it is to be told that the very thing they are (masculinity) is the culprit. Not the people that actually wronged him, they can’t be blamed, it’s you, if you are a male. There is no empathy for men, just exploitation and the search for means to how to get more from men, never give anything back. That’s what I think this research of yours about masculinity is. The research of how to get more from men, using MASCULINITY. We are not suppose to have problems, don’t you know? And whatever problems we have, women’s needs comes first. the STATE needs comes first, we are supposed to suck it up. Haven’t you heard HE for she? 10by10by10? Men are supposed to help women, not themselves.

Wanna help men? Stop ATTACKING MASCULINITY. That would help a lot.

@nuresearcher, my previous answer was short and tinged with sarcasm. However, there is method to my mind: In short, you are sampling the wrong data set.

Any results you get from the MGTOW population will be skewed away from Political Correctness. Should you publish a non-PC paper, then you will never get on the academic tenure track. Frankly, you will be lucky to get a job from anybody. (I’ve assumed you are working on a PhD because you want to work in your chosen field.)

Take a look at what has happened to tenured professors who strayed out of the bounds of PC, and never mind that their data were valid and conclusions sound. It is not pretty. Many lost tenure, job, and all faced vicious character assassination.

If you are smart (as opposed to book learning), then you will stick to data sets that will yield PC results, and thus enjoy a long and happy career.

For the start of a non-PC paper trail (and a lesson in the consequences befalling non-PC authors), check out /books/ where you will find books by Sommers, Vilar, Levant, and Farrell. Dr. Warren Farrell deserves special mention because he is the only male on that list, and more especially because he managed to hang on to his professorship after publishing. It was a tough go for him, but he survived.

By the way, did you know the oil and gas industry is offering US$70-100K to welders and pipe fitters? And said welders don’t need to have student loans? Also, they aren’t likely to get ulcers from worrying about what some angry feminists are going to do to them next week. Food for thought, just in case the academic thing doesn’t work out so well.

I have to agree with Keymaster 100% here.  He said it all.

All you need to know about help for men in need is that there is a huge shortage of it.  The results are in the male suicide stats.  Period.
