Anonymous3Ok guys, let’s discuss this.
Is VR going to work out? Which headsets and what games are you looking forward to?
Where would we try it out, and when?
It’s probably not something to just buy, I was thinking maybe Best Buy will have demonstrations to try out. Maybe we can figure out how it is and share some reports.
Since it’s first generation tech, likely it’s best to avoid it for now. 2nd and usually ideally 3rd generation are where the best experiences come from. But that could be at minimum 3 years away, likely closer to 5. I was thinking of doing a new computer build, as my CPU and motherboard are now a solid 5+ years old, but outside of VR I can still run everything fine so it seems like I should wait, perhaps at least another 2-3 years. But if VR takes off in 5, who knows if that timing works either.
you need a good GPU to support the Oculus Rift.
MGTOW is not a movement, it is a way of life.

Will tie into this with Oculus Rift.It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion, it is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning; it is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.
I’m fence sitting right now now because i know 3D tech has a habbit of coming and going rather than taking off, there was something simiar around back in the early 90’s. There was even a microsoft holo lens sort of device in development back then that i remember seeing on a tech program, but i’m guessing it never got past the development stages.
It looks like people who have tried it are pretty impressed with the immersiveness so i’m going to wait and see where things go with the early adopters.
I think the Sony VR headset may have the advantage right now because it can run on a current generation console.

Anonymous3Yeah the sensible thing is to wait another gen or two for it. But if this stuff really is as amazing as the hype is going for it, it’s something I’d like to jump on and try.
As a frugal MGTOW, since I don’t waste money on women, clothing, shoes, or traveling around etc., the money is certainly there for this. And if it really is what it’s cracked up to be, for games that usually winds up to something like 0.25 per hour of gameplay. Often even less. The only cheaper entertainment is books, which are great and I do read a lot, but VR can have its own charms.
I swear after those debts are gone I am so f~~~ing jumping more into my drone and vr stuff…
Hopefully it’ll be more than just hype.
Since the 3D-fiasco concerning the televisions sold as “3D-ready” a couple of years ago, I’m vary of anything 3D. It wasn’t ‘real 3D’, just fake 2.5D they were trying to sell as “the real deal”.
Now, with Oculus Rift, we might get something, because you’re not ‘outside looking in’, but you’re in virtual reality. The first clue I got that there’s something coming came some weeks ago when they announced Steam VR, with a wide selection of games.

For this to take off, we need to wait 3 generations, because I think the tech hasn’t reached maturity yet.

Don’t know if that will be of help to you guys, but I’ll be buying S6 + gear vr. It’s reasonably priced and I’ve already seen how to change battery myself. I was torn between Note 4 and S6 due to exchangeable battery and SD card but decided to go for S6 in the end (smaller screen door effect and stronger processor for the price of smaller Field Of View).
Just so you know, I don’t buy it because I’m too excited or something, just that my father mentioned about gifting my grandparents a smartphone and I figured I could use an update anyway, the gear vr is just a bonus (a big and hopefully pleasant one). This and the fact that as a single man company (or how it’s called in english), in Poland, I can deduct taxes from it and put it under costs of operating, so the price will be significantly cheaper. My current aim is to get myself my own place without debts so even though I have the money for oculus, it’ll have to wait for 3-4 years, right when we predict 2nd consumer gen.
I’m currently seeking cheapest offer with convinient warranty around my place, my guess is I’ll have the S6 in around a week or two, gear vr probably a week or 2 later. I’ll post in this thread as soon as I get the stuff 🙂
I got super excited with the HTC vive but i just don’t think the games are there yet.
Only thing so far that would hold my interest is the 3d free painting program they had bundled in.
As much as I would love to grab a virtual paint brush its not enough for me to justify getting one.
When and if the right games come along then I will put some cash aside for the HTC. Sure its more expensive but from what i hear its well ahead of the rest.
I’m fence sitting right now now because i know 3D tech has a habbit of coming and going rather than taking off, there was something simiar around back in the early 90’s.
It’s different this time. It’s not just that we have better computer graphics and more power. They’ve solved the major technical problems that killed old versions of VR.
So far, the best product on the market (and the most expensive) is the Vive.
We’re about 95% as close to total VR as we’ll get without actually being “inside” the simulation like the holodeck from star trek. And, ironically, the last 5% will come with better displays and more powerful computers. We’ve got everything else right now.

Anonymous3The hype seems to have collapsed, and people are selling their kits waiting for a future version. Some people are saying it’ll be a good 10 years before it’s really any good.
Others are saying keep an eye on PSVR, which is really going to show if it will be viable. Not because it will be great, but because it’ll have the largest potential base for it. I think that’s due out by the end of the year.
I’m waiting on AMD Zen chips at the earliest to do a new PC build, since Zen is more multi-core, and AMD has been working with console devs and VR. If it’s really going to take off, that’ll be the route. But the risk is if it fails, Intel and Nvidia have traditionally been better for normal gaming. I do have the money to build multiple rigs, but I do not think that is an intelligent thing to do.
Not gonna spend 800 bucks for a VR headset. I’ll wait.

Alright guys, here I am, I’ve had Samsung Galaxy S6 phone, GearVR and the SteelSeries XXL controler for about 2 weeks.
You can see the screen door effect (if you focus on it enough) and you can see the limitations of your field of view, but there is literally no comparison to Cardboard when it comes to quality.
I’ve tried playing games on it (most free games suck though, just a show of gimmicks) and the one free, I can recommend is Herobound. You are forced to use your controller there but it is really nice and enjoyable. I didn’t really go into buying games yet and don’t know if I will anytime soon. Oh, one more thing, most games don’t need a controller, which to be honest makes them kinda boring fast. Head tilting and touchpad usage only goes so far.
I’ve tried watching movies on it and to be honest those 360* ones in 4k quality are pretty fun to watch (though you can’t call 4k really high quality here, the view is pretty stretched), especially those:
You can easily download them from youtube with TubeMate application on your phone. Those 360* videos must be put into specific folders (Oculus/360Videos) and in some cases have specific name ending (specifying movie split, like TB – top bottom, etc.) to work properly in Oculus Video app (if I remember correctly). In case it is legal in your country (like it is in mine) to download movies etc., as long as you don’t upload it, you can use browser plugins to download those streamed videos and put them into Movies folder to be able to watch them in Oculus Video app. I’ve watched whole Deadpool while lying on my bed with my face directed to the ceiling and didn’t notice (or rather paid attention) to pixels. There are several surroundings to choose from, like cinema, ant cinema etc. but I’ve chosen void (pitch black background). Gotta say, it was a pretty good experience, made me kinda want to watch more movies from now on.
You can use a Samsung Internet app which serves as a GearVR internet browser, however it’s biggest drawback I noticed is lack of adblock. Those popup ads really make browsing some sites annoying (reason why I downloaded deadpool instead of streaming it). However viewing porn sites on it is quite easy and nice :D.
There is a Netflix app inside, but I don’t have an account, so couldn’t have tested it.
You can also download a service blocker (though that costs) from google play store, which let’s you disable the automatic start of Oculus app. Then you can use an app like VaR’s VR Video Player and TrinusVR freely.
Interesting movies for VR Video Player can be found under “free vr porn” tag on google :D.GearVR is comfortable to wear you’ve got 2 regulated rubber straps, one goes around the head, the other goes on top. I’ve not really paid attention to it’s weight while wearing it, so I’d say it’s pretty well made. There is room for glasses, which is both a plus and a minus, people with glasses will surely like it, but for others it lets in some light from outside (though not much). You also have a phone screen distance regulation which lets you find the sweet spot with clarity of picture. Sad thing is – you have no IPD (inter pupilary distance) regulation. You see it clearly when unable to find the sweet spot you move the gearVR to the left while closing right eye, catch the sweet spot for the left eye, then open your right eye. In my case it was blurry – means I have higher IPD than recommended range (my research of the product was lacking). Though nearly everyone I’ve shown this to had no issues with finding the sweet spot, so I guess my IPD is not that common. What can be done to combat this issue? You’ve got to look straight ahead and use your head to look around. That works for me though it still is a bit of an inconvinience.
There is an app called TrinusVR, which lets you stream view from a window opened on your PC. You need to set up a client on your phone and server on your pc. Sending data through WiFi will make you nauseous (or my WiFi is too slow), the image gets choppy and I got this motion sickness pretty fast with that choppiness. Sending data through usb cable solves the issue. Compatibility of many games (which must be run in windowed mode, so MK9 or 10 doesn’t fullfill that) is questionable. When I’ve tested Hearthstone I didn’t see the cursor, so it’s pretty game breaking. With sending data through usb cable comes a previously unknown to me issue. You’ve got a built in micro usb male port in GearVR (where you lock your phone in) and female port on the bottom of it. What I didn’t know is that you’ve got no data connection between the 2. Only power line is connected, data line is connected to the touchpad and buttons on the side of GearVR. This makes it pretty impossible to use GearVR with TrinusVR efficiently. I’ve read about fixes containing angled microUSB cables, but haven’t been able to find one small enough to fit the gear in my vicinity (haven’t found many of them either). I’m planning to make my own microUSB cable with angled male microUSB port, but just can’t seem to find the time to get down to it right now. I’ve tested TrinusVR with Cardboard though and it’s not even close to what could be achieved with GearVR or probably other headset, the field of view is hugely restricted and it impacts the feel. However, it works! I’m pretty sure that when I get around to making the mentioned angled cable the experience will be extraordinary.
Smallest specks of dust are visible, so get some compressed air and microfibre handkerchief beforehand. This also makes an issue of glass protectors for the screen, some can blurry the image (I haven’t put one on my phone due to that).
All in all, it’s a great toy. I can’t use it that often, because I don’t really have the time and without game streaming from PC, the really good entertainment is kinda limited to watching movies.
Would I recommend buying GearVR? Well, as with many things it depends. If gearVR is an addition to the phone you decided to take, then I say go for it. If you’ve chosen a different phone than those compatible (high screen resolution, like in s6 is still a must!) you might be interested in third party headsets. Unfortunately, I have no idea about those so you’re on your own with research. Gyro, IPD regulation, distance regulation and data link to phone through cable are the things to look at.
What about when you don’t have/plan to have a high res screen phone? Not worth it. Overall it’s a fun and enjoyable experience, but nothing indispensable. Even when you get it you won’t use it nearly as often as you might imagine now.
I’m open to any questions, will try to answer them 🙂
After looking at free porn for VR available now, I stand corrected, you will fap furiously with it 😀 (eg. http://kinkvr.com/39362_2.html).
Porn quality and immersiveness level is way above just watching it on PC. That’s a big plus for anyone considering.

Anonymous3Whelp, tried out the HTC Vive. I would say the first 2.5 minutes or so were kind of cool, and after that it was just so absurdly obvious that it’s little more than a set of 3d glasses with low resolution packaged into an overpriced gimmick to get people to actually wear 3d glasses.
I would say that with higher resolution it could be interesting for movies. Although movies would need to be shot with full field of vision 360 degree cameras. But even then, I don’t know, because standing around seemed kind of dumb pretty quickly, and if you’re sitting probably you won’t turn more than about 180 degrees.
I fully expect VR to fizzle out long before this technology would actually mature, if it could even mature. But then again there are people that pay $600-800+ for smartphones every year or two, so perhaps not. Perhaps if Apple releases VR it will become popular. If I was Apple I’d get on iVR right now. Google glass is probably the next step in that, but nobody will care until Apple markets their version, just the same way nobody cared about music players, smartphones or tablets until Apple pretended they invented those things.
In my opinion this is mostly a gimmick to try to sell you more stuff.
Like MonkeyMind said, they’ve tried this before, yes it’s better now but it’s essentially the same thing.
Now remember motion controllers and 3D TVs in recent years, I don’t envy the people that wasted money on those. So frankly I don’t think you’re gonna miss out on much if you just wait, or skip the tech all together.
I know I have 0 interest in it, might be cool for racing games and something along those lines, but I still can’t be bother.Perhaps what annoys me most of all is them getting rid of the classic controller, Imagine the PS4 for example, if you could still use the controller normally and basically replace the Right Thumbstick with the VR head set, then they might be on to something.
Standing around with the set while using gimmick things in your hands, not for me.

Just sold the HTC Vive.
I had it from April 2016 to December 2016.
I am a big fan of VR.
I agree that it is too early for most users: it is only for sw developers and for very early adopters, currently (as of end of 2016).I am a proud owner of a Vive and I must say it is f~~~ing amazing if expensive as f~~~.
Only buy if you have some money to burn and a desire to experience incredible immersion!
