I see one young woman occasionally who picks up the tab about 40% of the time, which is pretty impressive (the fact that I’m impressed she does it at all is telling, right?) She’s self-proclaimed “polyamorous” and probably HAS to maintain the appearance of a high degree of financial independence to justify being openly involved with a number of men. That’s not to say she is actually making that money herself, she’s married and I know she’s not very well employed.

I have another female friend who picks up the tab pretty much every time as I only meet her after work… she gets everything comped anyway but I’ll count that as paying since she’s spending some of her accumulated good will on me.

The only other one that leaps to mind is my female friend from high school who is pretty much a sister to me at this point… she is very generous with her money and always has been, but she was a trust fund kid and now is pretty much dependent on her husband so, again.

On the rare occasion that a woman reaches for her wallet on a date, it’s usually a very visible gesture to make it clear that she doesn’t owe me sex. Of course I’m thinking “If I wanted to pay for sex I wouldn’t be at a restaurant.” But I know that gesture is only going to last until we actually have sex and then she’s never going to pay for another single thing, so naturally I’m not falling for the whole “independent woman” thing even if she makes a good showing from the start.

So three, maybe four women out of hundreds… possibly thousands that I’ve met. Let me revise that percentage… 0.2%
