Does anyone else here like to play older games ?

I have a lot of old games like Doom and Wolfenstein (both the “3D” PC version and the older Apple II version) as well as a collection of 50 Atari 2600 games.

Between DOSbox and other emulators, you can keep hundreds of these old classics and run them even on a very old notebook.

I thought I would never get to play Zaxxon again !

Not into computer games at all, but I do have an old machine because I occasionally geek out on RIVEN / MYST / EXILE which I was addicted to back then. It’s all I will play, really.

Also created an Asteroids game (in flash) a few years ago and I my favorite of all time was “Dirk The Daring” back when I was a kid and they had arcades.

I still have many consoles and a huge collection of games from my childhood and teen years. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Nintendo Gamecube, Playstation, Playstation 2, and then onto modern stuff…

If you don’t know about this guy on Youtube, check him out, it is very funny stuff. Start with his early stuff.

I re played Dune 2 a year ago, now going through Doom 2. It’s like a portal to adolescence. My fav game growing up was Elite for ZX Spectrum – I spent months playing it. Also Civilization and UFO Enemy Unknown, Heroes of Might and Magic was big in college
I also noticed I had much more focus and patience back in the day. Psychotropic meds must had fried my brain over the years.
I barely play now – maybe once a month. Hard to sustain effort for long periods of time. I can’t even watch most movies beginning to end any longer.

Always loved doom, even had it loaded as a hi-res version under linux with around 50 different wads and all the originals. You’ve got me thinking that it’s time to download all the bits and run it again at 2048×1280, connected to my telly with surround sound.

Hate to admit to be able to waste time on this, but I love it.
Even ran Hexic, Quake and a few others.

Damnit, no ! You’re busy and have other things to do.
But, I’ll only play one game ….

Sod it, you’ve got my inner child whining now.

I had to look up Dirk the Daring, Dragon’s Lair is all I ever knew it as, and yea, it was a big deal in it’s day for sure. Here is AVGN’s review of the NES version. He does talk about the arcade version as well.

Hey Keymaster, could you do me a favor. Could you please delete my previous post on this thread, and Nerevar’s reply. I may have posted too much information and I am worried.

I did play those games in years gone by, because that was all my computer could handle.

Though I don’t mind occasionally dropping into an old Microprose simulation, or Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D, just for old times sakes. I don’t play many DOS games anymore though, the age of them is starting to become quite apparent now and stuff like Digital Combat Simulator blows all those old flight games out of the water.

Only have one console and that is an N64. Sometimes I hook it up and play Goldeneye too.

I do have a small collection of MAME roms, DOS games, Windows games from 1995-2005 and internet games from way back that I managed to salvage. Burning Metal 3D anyone?

This is a great topic despite the fact that I only feel like playing the old school games every once in a while. I mean I grew up with classic atari console and arcade games such as Pacman, Pitfall, Frogger, Phoenix and the like. But you know what: these days virtually all of them have been converted to online flash based games and you may play them online whenever you like ie. here:

    http://www.classicgamesarcade.com/

For a few days in a row some months ago I got “re-hooked” so to speak (warning: retro-addiction-factor!!!) (re)playing most of them (and yes there’s even Doom and Quake to be found there). So yeah, Joe Bauers you won’t even necessarily need your consoles no more, but could sell some of them and instead just go online and have a go there.

@ Russky: If you liked Elite a lot, there is a fairly oldish similar type of game that I downloaded for free and occasionally still play on and off myself called “vega strike”, which is a game and an game engine at the same time and features not only the trading options and space exploration but also some serious space fighting (in some missions) as well but with quite a bit better graphics than Elite.

After years of walking away, I finally broke down and went back to playing World of Warcraft (WoW). I have been playing WoW on and off again since when the original version of World of Warcraft came out, before the Burning Crusade expansion release.

Ahh, don’t worry Faust ‘cos I’m actually worse than you since I keep coming back at Diablo II EXP both offline and online, he he.

So this is my nerdy face showing up now.

Have a great weekend, you all.

    Two words: Redneck Rampage

Any game that has both a p~~~ key and a yeehaw key has GOT to be good. And it didn’t disappoint.

BTW for Linux guys out there – it runs awesome under DOSemu.

@ Biggvs_Dickvs, I am not a gamer but I totally remember Redneck Rampage at a friend’s house. It was hilarious. Also, I’ve meant to comment on your handle, Wayne and Shuster? Peace brother.

Yea, but part of the nostalgia for me is having the actual s~~~ I had as a kid. In fact some of it is the very same items I have had for 20-30 years. I love watching AVGN, it takes me back… His basement is awesome. He also has a MASSIVE vhs and laser disc collection which I am into as well. Something about having the old stuff around you that is comforting I guess. I have about 700 VHS tapes, some rare and worth some money. Vintage hard to find Horror is getting pricey on VHS… I also collect vinyl.

Man I really have a boner for AVGN’s basement… Here is the “Video Store” section…

I don’t play games the way I used to. Back in the day, I was VERY competitive and kicked ass every time, but in the past few years, it’s like I’ve really settled down on games. I do still a lot of ROMs, emulators and ISOs. I would play the following which I do still have on my PC:

The old Ninja Turtles – NES
Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time – SNES
Super Mario Bros 3 (Alternate HACK versions)
    Tetris
    Dragon Warrior
    Ultima Exodus
    Bubble Bobble
Legend Of Zelda (original and alternate versions)
    Legend Of Link
    Kid Icarus
    Mega Man 1 – 6
Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, 3, Knuckles (when hooked up to 3).
Mortal Kombat 1, 2, Trilogy – Johnny Cage is my fighter choice.
    Street Fighter II
    Pit Fighter
Legend Of Mystical Ninja – SNES
    WWF Royal Rumble – SNES
    Monopoly – Genesis
    Test Drive 5 – PS1
    Resident Evil – PS1 era
    Tomb Raider – PS1 era
    Ridge Racer – Simulation game
    Final Fantasy VII
    Resident Evil RPG (Fan Made)

I have those games above plus a lot more, but like I said I haven’t played these or any game in a long time. I’m 33 and I felt like I just drifted away from video games, or maybe it’s because I never get myself in the mood anymore as I’m occupied with something else all the time.

    Hey Rusky !

I know there is a great ZX Spectrum emulator for Linux. I think Elite can be downloaded as a .tap file. A British friend of mine turned me on to a few games a while back.

My fav game growing up was Elite for ZX Spectrum – I spent months playing it.

    Months? Just only months? 😀
I spent some years, playing it on a similar computer (not a ZX Spectrum, something similar…) and I’m at a VERY high level
Damn, I cannot write more, it’s a pain but privacy matters and my real name is associated to this, in many pages on the Internet…

There’s an official site where you can download, legally, all the versions and even many emulators to run the versions.
I don’t link just because my real name is cited even here… 🙁

For people who loves Elite I suggest:

“Elite-A” – special version by Angus Duggan, you have to run it on an BBC emulator.

    “ArcElite” – the Archimedes version.

“SunDog – Frozen Legacy”, the only true competitor of Elite, 1985, Atari ST.

“Oolite” – modern version, freeware, available for Linux, Mac e Windows – here

I did something clever a few nights ago involving retro games. I have my ROMs and emulators for the 80s and 90s games on my computer. What I did was took my old XP computer out of the basement where it was not being used in my workout station, and I put it back in my room, hooked it up to my TV set and I put all my ROMs and PS1 ISOs on it. Now I can play my childhood favorite games on the TV again, but I have to use a keyboard and mouse to play them instead of console controllers, but that’s fine. I recently saw my old PC games on the TV for the first time. A game like Thief II: The Metal Ages. It’s neat to see PC games on m HDTV set.

So I figure what was the point of keeping it in the basement collecting dust, when I put it back in my room, hook it up to the TV and use it as a replacement for the old systems; systems that haven’t worked in over 20 years. I don’t even need that PC hooked up to the Net, I have the computer I’m using now (Windows 7 Pro) for that. That only system I was unable to get onto my XP computer was the PS2, because the emulator for it doesn’t support XP, at least it didn’t mine.
