I wouldn’t worry, 9/10 Americans dying after one year is only the worst case scenario.

Rather than citing lobbyists looking for funding from morons in Congress, how about a report from Oak Ridge National Laboratory?

Pay close attention to the appendix dealing with popular myths, many of which have been repeated in this thread by well meaning, but credulous, members.

While EMP is a favorite boogeyman for preppers, survivalists, and others, it’s effects a grossly exaggerated.

Starfish Prime was detonated over the Jonson Atoll and caused havoc in Hawaii knocking out communications, and power in some areas, and that was before the microchip and shortly after the silicone transistor.

Everything holding an electric charge will get an immediate mind wipe, including motors and generators, they’ll need to be re-polarized Everything will be dead, but not for long, we’ll have the biggest recharging effort seen by mankind.

When I used to repair and resell generators I learned how to excite and re-polarize generator stator magnets that set too long and lost their magnetism.

I’d be in demand, that’s for sure!

What’s to stop N.Korea from putting an massive EMP in permanent orbit? Then hold us hostage with his finger on the trigger?

The damage alone could buy 500 N.Koreas with chump change to spare!

    Starfish Prime

Is addressed in the report I linked.

    Read it.

There will be wide spread damage to things other than the electric grid. Computers with their microprocessors will be one of them. Everything has processors from refrigeration to your washer and dryer. Anything that doesn’t have points and condenser will not be able to run. Only cars with magnetos will run on the the day after (model-T).

    In the “report”, Pg 2-1

For the U.S., the bursts were over
the wide expanse of the sparsely populated So
uth Pacific. The only real infrastructure
was in Hawaii, very far away, and generally co
    nsisted of electronic
    tubes, and power grid
relays that were bulky (and hardy) electrom
echanical devices. There were some upset
    and damage effects in Hawaii.

    The Russian
experience, which was over land and more
pertinent, was over a vast desert region, al
    so with very antiquated infrastructure
equipment. They did have damage associ
    ated with long lines
    (communications and
power insulators), and also damage to diesel
generators and radar systems. Now, more
than half a century later, and after all the te
chnical advances in our modern infrastructure
(solid state electronics), it is certainty true
to say that E1 HEMP is likely to be a bigger
problem than it was in 1962

There are rumors/speculation that North Korea has EMP capabilities.
Detonated from high orbit over the US, the electrical grid would be destroyed.
Our population would then kill/destroy ourselves trying to survive.

Nowadays people are so dependent on electricity that I won’t be surprised if things get f~~~ing crazy, just because they don’t have electricity anymore for a while.
