The people know not what they do.

Unfortunately, 99.999% of the people on this planet are complete imbeciles.

All the intelligent and educated people are right here on this website, and that’s it – I am convinced.

The future is self driving cars anyway. You will just order a pickup through your phone, it will take you somewhere, and then whisk itself away. Maintenance, insurance and other concerns will all be handled by the provider. There is little to no risk of theft either, as your car will not be parked unattended anywhere. Parking in general will not be an issue. The cars will likely be electronic so fuel also will not be an issue.

More rural areas won’t have this option most likely, but those areas also probably won’t have cameras and detectors all over the place to track you from your farm to the one store in town. So it really won’t particularly matter.

Things are going to be so different in 10 years. Most of these concerns will be silly when you think back about it.

I don’t get it. Perfectly fine with being tracked everywhere with your cell phones and tablets (s~~~ YOU will even download and install the apps yourself). Spied on by your smart Tv’s, laptops and other appliances. But outraged when they can track your cars? They already can BTW if you have a GPS navigation system etc.

How many of us would you guess have that gear? Myself I have an old school basic as you can get flip phone. No smart TV. No other appliances that are wifi or anything like that. Have a bunch of lap tops, but have not downloaded any tracking software. I also do not have a gps in my car.
I prefer to remain with limited connections.

No thanks. Aluminum works perfectly well for me.

They’ve already phased out the sticker system here in NSW – a pain in the ass, since if you are ever driving any vehicle other than your own, you have no idea if it’s registered. Here it was a way to save money, our government wants everyone to do all the business of government themselves, on line, so they can sack all the public servants.

There is a simple app that tells you the rego status of any vehicle in NSW. Just type in the plate number.

I also do not have a gps in my car.

GPS are only receivers. Don’t get one that has all of the smart crap in it…

And like I said, the Garmin Nüvi 660/670 will read and route “modern” 2017 CN (NT – non unicode version) maps and even topographic and OSM maps will display perfectly. I have made my own custom designed map color scheme.

And it will never record the route. It will only store your entered destination. And you can delete that and secure erase the .GPX file on the device with Ccleaner. But it never stores your route, it will always calculate it again. And you can do an easy factory reset on it…

20 bucks on eBay and 10 bucks for a new battery.

And it will display and route the “hacked maps” modern units won’t work with.

With the SiRf-star III chipset it is one of the best units ever built, despite of it’s age. It works in the dense forest with “still” 6 m accuracy.

No need to go without GPS.

    GPS are only receivers.

    You think so, huh?

It only collects data from the satellites it “sees” and calculates your position from the timing difference between these signals. That’s why you need 5 “locked” satellites to get a decent position.

It never transmits anything backwards. It would need a huge dish or an L-Band antenna to reach these satellites… GPS is a military system and they would surely not want to deal with millions of civilian signals.

If the GPS unit does not have any “smart” backward channel built in for “civilian” or commercial s~~~, then it does not transmit.

Most GPS units also have a traffic receiver and Bluetooth. The traffic works like a simple FM radio and gets the data from the SCA signal “behind” the radio station’s audio. And the Bluetooth is a separated module for the mobile phone, extremely limited in range. And on the units I checked, it stays off when turned off… (I checked with an RF meter) .

But in conjunction with the “internet enabled” mobile phone the Bluetooth can spy on you… So don’t pair it with your phone. Use a separate Bluetooth set.

Bad for your privacy are these “smart” units that use the UMTS, GSM or LTE/4G connection to send your position to Google and it’s advertisers… And a GPS that gets you weather forecasts and news is like always that.

If you use the built-in GPS on your mobile “whatever” then you can be sure to get tracked.

Then a PVN won’t even do any good. They can tell in which house you sit and have your name and address. Even if you “enter” the internet on the other side of the globe.

I always use self-built desktop PC’s without anything in them that I do not have total control over. No camera, no mic, no GPS… Or do I want the feminazis to know on which side of my house I sit?

    No way.

Oh, and don’t hook a modern GPS to your PC and have TomTom sell your “traffic violations” to the cops…

That happened in the Netherlands and since then, the cops know exactly on which traffic spots people regularly drive too fast and the radar trap financial return is most likely to be the highest…

In the Netherlands, TomTom is a hated brand since that day. It was supposed to be kept secret but it got leaked…

Get an old GPS before the “smart age” (2007). And never connect it to anything mobile or internet.

You can update your maps via SD card.

    LOL.

There should be lessons in school on privacy protection matters…

Not really to much worried, I do not buy the top of the line gear that would come stock with that kind of gear.

Some of this is kind of moot, CCTV popping up ever where. I even have security cameras up.

My cell phone doesn’t have a huge dish or L-Band

Cell phones have 2 watts of max. power and an L-Band antenna inside the case. Etched on the circuit board and best designed to keep the main direction away from your head. Triple/Quad (4G) band to resonate at 900+1800/1900 + 2100 and 2500 MHz depending on the country.

Range is 2 Km’s to reach the cell-tower. And the GSM (G2) system is designed to work up to 70 Km distance between towers in fringe areas.

A cell phone can reach LEO satellites if present. But in fringe areas with only a few visible satellites, it might need a dish. 200 Km is still some way to go.

Cell phones are designed to be a 2-way system. GPS is not. Any pure bred GPS without GSM or LTE s~~~ (enhancements) inside of it cannot be located or detected. If our GPS units would jam or spam military satellites, we would get them confiscated right away. And for position finding, a 2-way link is not needed. Only an accurate and “current” orbit data base and stable oscillator/time base inside your device is required.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

There is also one more enhancement to GPS that is called WAAS/EGNOS which is also a receive only system to increase GPS accuracy to “better than” 1 m even on consumer devices. It works on the GPS frequencies of satellites 33 to 49. 0 to 32 is the GPS range all by itself. But these add-on satellites transmit “correction” information to compensate for “atmospheric bending” of the GPS signal. (Designed for aviation use but good for hiking as well)

I like using it because it gives me perfect altitude readings in the woods. But you need clear sight to the geostationary orbit, like TV satellites. So WAAS/EGNOS does not always work. And it eats away battery duration time.

Again the ancient Nüvi 660 was the last automotive Garmin to have WAAS (USA) and EGNOS (Europe).

Or get one of the waterproof hiking units (Oregon/Montana series)

Just pop them in a microwave for ten seconds or so. Do not use a microwave you cook food with.
