if you need to stay 10 or 15 minutes extra so be it

I had, as I told my manager, absolutely zero problem staying staying longer if that’s what he needed, and I was sure, as two rational, reasonable men, we could come to some sort of arrangement where I could fulfill that. I said $15/hr was fair, but he just laughed at me; and I told him it was completely up to him.

that’s the sad reality of the job market nowadays, where workers are plentiful and disposable, and the employer could care less about wages, benefits, or if you show up tomorrow.

My only consolation is that I’ve realized it’s a non-trivial pain in the ass to fire a worker, even one that’s not unionized (unionized? He might as well be a tenured f~~~ing professor). The employer has to conduct interviews, find a right person, and then have to train him from scratch.

Never put your heart into a S~~~ JOB, however, when in a s~~~ job always be looking for another before you quit in anger and disgust or getting fired

Tiny bit disagree. I’ve found that whenever I put 100% of myself into something, even if it’s something I hate, I rarely end up feeling worse about myself. But putting less than 100% results quite frequently in regret, even if the job is s~~~.

    Also.. STEM fields.
    Science, Technology, Engineering and Math/Med.

Ha, I have a degree in Computer Engineering from one of the top schools in the country, but thanks anyway.

I’m not uneducated/unskilled. The economy is really just that bad. Also, employers’ standards are absolutely absurd, almost as bad as the standards 40+ women have on dating sites.

It is the other person duty to be there 12:30, I am not responsible for that person turning up late. If that’s the way this store runs, I better be late coming to working knowing the person before me will be punished instead of me.

GENIUS BRO! ABSOLUTELY GENIUS! Why didn’t I think of saying that?!

Then again, when I got home, I realized that they had already made up their minds, and there was nothing I could have said to change their minds.

It shows financial wisdom to live frugally and have money set aside — as opposed to living high and blowing it all on shiny new things.

Yup, I’m incredibly frugal (I’ve never been offended by the accusation of being “cheap”). I think there was a Cæsar or someone who said: “Wealth consists not of having many things, but in having few wants.”

Give me some coffee, some music, and a piano, some time to read and write, and I’ll be happy till the day I die.

Work to live, don’t live to work.

    Right.

If ever I were in a situation where the only way I could survive and get my food and shelter met by working every single waking hour, then I’d be living to work, and that’s unacceptable. That’s how I would justify suicide in that situation.

But I’m not there, and I hope never to be there.

Your manager should have been up your relief’s ass for being late.

Never have I actually been replaced on time. Always I left when my shift ended and no one was there.

But as I had only been there for a month or so, and was still on probation, I think all my replacements had higher seniority than I in the union. Makes sense why they’d go after me; absolutely zero consequences for doing so.

So there’s me after taking 15mins of s~~~ from some c~~~ because of policy he told me to enforce only be be told the exact opposite because I was disturbing him.

After enough experience in customer service roles, I never, ever get angry with low-level employees or phone tech support people. Not only will getting angry accomplish nothing, but their problems are not their fault, and they’re trying to do everything in their power to rectify it.

I went above and beyond before – MANY TIMES – and did other people’s jobs… to the point where I should have been promoted. Guess who go the promotion. The LAZY one. The one I covered for. The one with no work ethic.

Yup, there’s no justice in this world. Which is why I’m always loathe to go the extra mile unless there are immediate, explicit benefits for doing so.

This way, your manager would be forced to get off YOUR back and get on someone else’s case for being late.

No, because the employees are unionized; and I, having absolutely zero seniority, still on probation, have absolutely no recourse to unfair treatment; I didn’t even get a union rep to represent me to the employers when they were firing me.

As did I. It gets you exactly the same thing as catering to women does corn holed.

Most workplaces are political s~~~ holes. The bosses’ favorites can slack off with no fear while idiots such as my former self who logically figured that one would at least be recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty get f~~~ed over time after time.

Some managers will recognize those who do truly excel, but they are in the minority. They are a true pleasure to work for. Consider yourself fortunate if you have one. Every time I’ve had one, a corporate buyout happened. The good managers with ethics are fired and hatchet men sociopaths are brought in to cut costs to maximize the profits made from the sale of the business. That’s how it works in real life.

Also, employers’ standards are absolutely absurd, almost as bad as the standards 40+ women have on dating sites.

    LOL…. So very, very true.

@rockmaninoff You were right to do what you did, when i was younger I worked low hourly rates and had to deal with pencil dick lifer managers who knew nothing about the job. They of course would try to make you work longer over when you are scheduled and my response is usually if you want me to stay longer you need to ask me far ahead of time as I schedule my life outside of work and need to keep a constant schedule. Also for 11/bucks an hour that really is only beer money and not worth going over an abroad what you are tasked with doing, I sure as hell would not. If it is a good employer they will see what you are worth and pay you accordingly, a bad employer will try to suck you dry. There are plenty of jobs around and also trades as others have described so getting a job is not a problem, all I can say is make sure you have a backup plan always in place and some money set aside for any job loss.

With a degree in computer science from a top university I would stay home, don’t work and just send out resume’s all day. With those kind of skills in this economy you have to find something within a year. That time would pay off better than pushing a broom for min wage.

Yeah, that’s what I said. My manager was so appalled that I wouldn’t work longer last minute, because he couldn’t conceive that even if I wrote that I was available that whole day, I would make plans to do stuff during the times he didn’t schedule me.

With those kind of skills in this economy you have to find something within a year.

Yup, that’s the plan. I’ve got phone interviews coming out of my ass, would like a few more face-to-face interviews though.

Toronto is the New York of Canada, so I’m bound to find something soon.

Oh no, it wasn’t free, but it was longer than I was scheduled. Which is fine, but if they need me to work last minute, they’d have to pay me more.

$11 an hour US dollars? Thats exactly what im being paid here in New Zealand for this s~~~ty security job, which equates to $15.50 NZD an hour. Minimum f~~~ing wage here.

They f~~~ing called me yesterday asking if id do a 14 hour shift, and i said not a f~~~ing chance in hell. EVER. Never will i work 14 hours. What a bloody cheek. Its bad enough doing a 12 hour shift.

You did right man. Employers will always slave drive you as much as they can. You are expendable. I have clashed with many so called ‘managers, mostly women, some men, who were utter c~~~s to me for no reason. When I bit back they cried victim and that i was in the wrong!

I will never take abuse or s~~~ in a workplace from anyone. I would rather be homeless than put up with some c~~~~~~~~~.

People don’t realise that the economy is F~~~ED. Nothing makes sense out there. Someone is making millions/thousands a year sitting on their fat ass, someone else is busting their ass for f~~~ all. And no one cares.

Getting a ‘good’ job today is based on luck only, or who you know. Forget credentials and your resume, it means s~~~.

This is why you see so many f~~~ing wankers in high ranking jobs who are thick as s~~~ and dont know what they are doing.

7-Eleven here in Australia got busted ripping off workers, often paying them for only half of the hours they did. Often it was foreign workers who were only allowed to work 20 hours under their student visas, but 7-Eleven made them many hours unpaid under threat of telling immigration and getting them deported.

    http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2015/08/30/4301164.htm

And now ‘Zero Hour’ contracts have been embraced by Burger King and Dominoes Pizza in the UK to help their executives get even fatter bonuses yer-on-year –

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/aug/06/burger-king-dominos-zero-hour

Personally, even as an Australia, I’ve been f~~~ed over here by a boss telling me to be at a job-site at 6am and we can’t start because he had the property keys. He wanders in at 7.30am after a long, lazy breakfast with his family and cracked the s~~~s when we put a 6am start on our timesheets. He’d even f~~~ apprentices out of their tool allowances. Quit that job and he went out of business a few years later. Karma. Doing bar-work years back I caught a boss doctoring my timesheets to save wages. College educated, I gave him a lecture that it was unethical and was breaking the law. He changed the hours back and that prick later lost all his money in the stock-market crash. Karma.

The problem here in Australia is that employers abuse the 457 foreign worker Visa scheme and pay these foreign workers chump-change. In time employers think they can pull the same low wages and s~~~ty conditions s~~~ on us indigenous workers. Hence why big companies and their bough politicians trumpet ‘globalisation’ and free-trade. It’s why people like Trump and Pauline Hanson win elections, because locals are fed up with seeing their work, skills and talents undervalued and wages and conditions forced down by dodgy government industrial relations deals with foreign multinational corporations.

Consecutive Australian governments have embraced an ‘axis-of-evil’ if you will when it comes to employment for future generations. With rising unemployment, underemployment and household and government debt, Australian Governments continue to allow ‘cooks’ for f~~~s sake to be allowed in under the 457 Visas program. Are they seriously suggesting we need to import cooks with 20% youth unemployment in many parts of Australia?

Alas, the s~~~ employers try to pull won’t improve until we have a politicians prepared to stop-the-rot and make Australia great again.

Enough people have answered, but I’ll say it anyway.

They were trying to get over on you as some of us southerners like to say. They were going to push you to do the work for less, but you let them know you weren’t having any of that nonsense. They know they could find another person to work the job, so they try to blame it on you. It’s a good thing for you that you’re out of there. I know they would try the s~~~ again and again if you didn’t leave and you might have ended up doing things you wouldn’t have liked. just make sure that you’re saving up money and IMO, learn how to invest. Learn now and learn well. The next thing you know, the money will be working for you instead of you working for it.

Learn from the past, Control the present, and you will know the Future.
