I see hobby stores that still have models. I built a PBY from the Black Cat squadron once. I painted every piece. It looked awesome.

Try hobby stores and then go on-line.

Granted, I prefer the good old days too.

    It’s what got me flying.

    They’re SCALE models … right?

    1/72 … right?

So they’re just like the real thing … but smaller .. right?

Then why the fk don’t they fly when you throw them?

So I spent many an hour in the library trying to figure it out.

Ps don’t leave your newly painted model behind a bottle of cleaning fluid and a sundrench window.

Salvidor Dali would have been proud.

We have a hobby store in my town called Hobby Town USA and they sell a lot of models, trains, car tracks and stuff. They’re expensive though.

I took my model building a step further. I took sheets of foam board made measurements, cut out walls and built (I’m not exaggerating) a 7 foot tall Sears Tower and World Trade Center out of foam board cut outs. They are literally inches below the ceiling. It took me only 2 hours to build. It was painting it that took a lot of time. This hobby started with an 8th grade index card building contest. I first made buildings out of folded/stapled/glued layers of index cards, but when my buildings started to weaken, I went with foam boards. I even had a HO scale train set that wraps around the foam board city.

Speaking of model kits, there’s one out there at Hobby Town USA and eBay of the Bates Motel house I like to get some day. It’s only $20 some.

So cool! I wanna come to your house and play. I’ll bring the beer.(You know, I’m joking about coming over right?) Or, should I bring some Wa. weed instead?

I’ve still got some OH scale cars and a locomotive. I looked into doing that once…just never had the room. Too much of HER s~~~ in the way. I used to love model train sets as a boy. Ours was upstairs in the attic. My brother had a Lionel train set.

My first model was a Cessna 182 with a .40 fox nitro engine when I was 15.

I crashed it a few times by stalling it on takeoff, without the needed flying lessons from a pilot I was doomed to failure, but that didn’t stop me, instead of building time consuming kit models I started cutting and folding cardboard to create and airplane in a matter of hours with hotmelt glue, needless to say my flying garbage model got off the ice smoothly and gracefully just like the real thing, then at about 50ft it went out of range from a weak transmitter battery and impaled itself to a tree.

By the second flying garbage model I had enough sense to hold it level and climb climb climb, so I could have 300ft to make my 200ft turning mistakes from not pulling up and coordinating the throttle.

Landing is another story, again I made the mistake of stalling and wing over whirl into the ground.

I was hooked! The models got larger and faster along with allot of amphibian experience.

By the time I went to flight school I had more flight time than my instructor and understood allot of what they were saying from my own experiences. I even landed an ice covered model not realizing why I had to keep giving more and more power just to keep it flying, it landed like a speeding brick under half power but survived with a bent landing strut. I taught myself how to fly heli models without a pile of wreckage only because I practiced for months on a simulator before I purchased my first heli.

Every floor of my house has RC aircraft slung from the ceiling and my garage loft has 7 stored away, Some being duplicate builds but different engines.

I have a really cool rigid skin ultralight design I’d like to build, I’m considering a turbo prop, or otherwise a turbo piston with variable pitch prop.

Cloth wings are as slow and inefficient as parasails, I’d like to fly inverted, I fly upside down as good as right side up! One of my models is and Extra 300 S, the most challenging thing to fly with its acrobatic whip whirl flight characteristics.

    FLYING IS THE S~~~!

Some ultra lites crashed here in oz tower and it was due to be a lot of prop mods that caused them so just a tip don’t f~~~ with the prop.

    LOL I hear ya brother!

For me it was model ships and firearms ( thats right, back in the early 80’s you could buy model kits of your favourite fire arm in plastic of course but to scale with bullets!) Imagine how that would go over today.

    My ships/boats/subs included a German WW11 U-99,
an American WW11 Gato class submarine, JFK’s PT-109,
Probably what motivated me to join the Navy.

Lifes a bitch, but you don't have to marry one!

I still see them in stores from time to time.

I’ve actually got quite a few sitting in the attic of my garage that will probably never be built. It was one of my few hobbies from my cash strapped days, but I’ve moved on.
