While it’s not getting many GOTY awards(kind of baffling but eh), I can’t imagine this game is as little known as its previous installment. So far it seems it’s got a bit more than the average cult following.

For me it did start with the first one, I don’t care about having triple A nonsense if it’s fun and has good story and aesthetic. Automata is a clear step above, though, save some personal grievances.

I find it an interesting coincidence that the cause of a lot of things has to do with red eyes. From here on I’ve got spoilers for those who haven’t played through, so consider this your warning.

It would seem to me that whatever god is in this universe manifests itself in humans bearing red eyes. However, I often find that it simply represents either an underlying personality, or the revelation of truth. In Automata specifically, it signifies the machine lifeforms as a sort of hivemind, but also the character 9S’ coming to terms with an existential crisis.

This is not so important in the first Nier, although it’s interesting to think about what gave Replicants a sense of self. Won’t even bother talking about Drakengard 2 and it wasn’t present in 3, but in the first there was another character with a similar arc named Inuart.

He gave up his passion for music in order to gain the power to protect his s love, Furiae, irrational as it was. In much the same way, 9S gave up his logical thinking and was blinded with rage in order to avenge 2B. Different reasons and ways of contracting the supposed red eye disease, but still the result of blue pill narratives.

I wonder if the writer, Yoko Taro, realizes this. In any other game, Inuart would be the hero saving his princess, but instead his love is twisted and shown in a negative light. Caim isn’t a good person, either, but is the protagonist you play as.

Very ironic that SJWs claim Automata as well as Nier as what they stand for, and yet entirely miss the point of these games. Aside from the toxic romanticism, they frame it as the Shades/machine lifeforms being oppressed, when it is clearly simply about two conflicting sides unable to find a middle ground and are much fighting to the same goals.

Sorry a lot of this is rambling just birthday party drunk but I just played it again for the 3rd or 4th time since it came out so it’s fresh in my mind and wanted to discuss it anyway. Hope some of you have played it and hope to hear.

I love nier bro. I love all of Yoko Taro’s work, the crazy bastard. I wasn’t aware any SJW’s said that the game is “what they stand for” lol. Your going to have to explain that one to me.

Yoko Taro said that he doesn’t believe in a happy ending for mankind. So none of his stories end with the worlds more stable than when it started.

Very interesting and convoluted plot throughout the entire Drakengard and nier series, as well as a play and a few books if I’m not mistaken. Way too much for me to try and get into. Don’t understand a lot of it anyways.

You want to make me angry? I will take a bite out of that anger and shit out success.

Damn that is an interesting review, I may have to look into this one.

I am really into dystopian books and movies, and I am a gamer, Crankgankers description of what the creator said about believing there is no happy ending for mankind makes me want to know more about this guy’s stuff.

I’ve had my eye on this game for a while now, but I’m just hoping the price will drop in a few months.

Here is a great summary of the entire plot. The girl annunciates very well and is pretty easy to listen to.

Its a bit of a long one, but its pretty crazy.

Nier is on my list too. I know someone who raves about it and it does sound interesting.

Always thought Japanese RPG games were a little too weird, though Dark Souls was the exception.

Thanks Crankgankers! And I can attest to that summary. Kind of hard to get everything in there and still make sense to newcomers. Even so I think every game is fulfilling on its own. I actually prefer the first as a standalone story but appreciate how Nier incorporates it’s ending to it.

I can’t recall where I read SJWs talking about it, probably back when I browsed gamefaqs, some on twitter, etc. At least Taro himself has proven he doesn’t care about people complaining 2B is too sexualized. In fact I’d hope they’d model sex bots after her and A2 even if I’m not interested in them.

Dark Souls does seem a bit more western. Thankfully not as vanilla fantasy as something like Skyrim but easier to swallow than a lot of anime stuff. I do prefer both Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne for their stories but they still aren’t quite like Nier.

I watched an interview with Yoko Taro, where he was asked why 2B was so sexualized and he went on a long rant about how he thought androids from the future would look basically saying we would create them in our image to be a “perfect” human. But then ends it saying “I just like girls”.

But I mean the dude wears a mask whenever hes in public so of course he wouldn’t give a s~~~ about what the mainstream think.

I liked this game a lot. It had a good story, but they did that weird Japanese thing where it’s all told out of sequence for no real reason. I looked around and couldn’t find any playthroughs of the game where everything is in edited into the right order. The opposite in fact. Lot of people were claiming that it was impossible to do. Or that it’s structure was an integral component.

    Challenge accepted.

I made the edit myself. Most playthroughs of Automata are around 50 hours, but when you edit all the bull out, the games only about 10 hours long. So that’s the real reason behind it’s structure.

Of course I’m not a youtuber/twitch guy so my playthrough is buried deep in the search results and hasn’t had a single view. But what ya gonna do?

If any ones interested in watching it’s on my channel. It’s not monetised or anything. It’s just a shame that it took a lot of work to make only to be overlooked.

There are many games that are not mainstream and very good (Dark Souls 1 anyone?).
Nier automata is one gme I plan to get “someday” at a discount because I dont need more games now (s~~~ I bought witcher 3 4 months ago and still haven’t touched it).

Its a very good tip btw: if its a game that you can play later, just move your timing on playing games 3 years alter and you will save up cash on the game and on the hardware.

Crankganker – That’s a good point. People don’t often seem to think about the in-universe explanation as to why the androids look the way they do. Even so, I can respect that Taro also said he just likes girls. I think that’s an entirely valid reason when it comes to entertainment, and more honest than those like Kojima talking about characters like Quiet.

Zehm – I’ll check it out sometime. I don’t think it’s necessarily very confusing(honestly I think Beyond Two Souls is the absolute worst when it comes to out of order storytelling, but then I dislike that game in general), but I can see why it irked some. Logically, to me, all the new information in the second playthrough reflects the perspective of 9S, having more to do with hacking into the machines and such, andhis tendency to curiosity, compared to 2B. I think it would have been harder to convey this contrast in one run.

Catspaw – Good advice. I’m not really good at that but really should be. Buy way too much and play way too little before getting to the next game.

There’s only one chapter in the game where having control of 9S allows for a different perspective of events. That’s the Amusement Park which has a lot of extra back story about the Mad Singer. The rest of the extra info comes from cutaways which don’t really have any connection to either character, but are shown in the 9S playthrough to give some extra stuff to see. The rest of the extras comes from the characters being in different locations, but the game could have made the first half play like the second where you switch between characters. There’s only one point in the game where things don’t sync up correctly. That’s the point where 2B meets the religious machines and calls for help. There’s a 20+ min scene for 9S that takes place in less than 10 seconds while playing as 2B. That was a challenge to edit together and make sense.
