That was their excuse, but the actual reason was far more basic. See below.

And I wasn’t even going with her daughter; we were just in the same group project at school. Her mother just thought we were together. Our group started meeting at the library to work after that.

She wasn’t the only one, but she was the most blatant. Even my own mother would flirt with any boy my sisters brought home.

That dynamic exists between all women. They all want what they think other women have that they themselves don’t. This behavior makes no concessions for mother-daughter relationships or anything else. Mothers will try to poach their daughter’s mates. Sisters will try to poach each others mates. Daughters will try to poach their mother’s mates. The so called “electra complex”, despite all its neo-Freudian mumbo jumbo, is just a sub-case of this behavior.

Now that’s what I call “All in the Family”. I think it’s funny as hell. Actually it reminds me of how my dad used to flirt with this one girlfriend I had, but then he always enjoyed living vicariously through his kids. The girlfriend eventually became a stripper.
