That is a little bit of a injustice considering your past investment.
I know. I’m still focusing on getting a job in my field, but as of right now, I just need money for, at the very least, to pay off my college debt.
Nice intro. I’m only a bit older than you but I missed out on the collage bullet thanks to my parents tax problems. It prevented them from co signing loans or allowing me to get grants because they couldn’t “prove” our family was poor. Being white and male didn’t help in that aspect of things either as the gynocentric nature of grants and scholarships. But I’ve become a self taught engineer with my own hot rod shop designing chassis for old cars to accept new suspensions and a pretty solid scrounger when it comes to living cheap so here’s a few things to think about in terms of low buck living.
Motorcycles are cheap, and you can park anywhere. A new 300cc bike will set you back 4-5k or 150-200 bucks a months for a new almost no maintenance vehicle. Don’t be dumb and get full gear up front but you’ll love the freedom of the open air. Motorcycle guys call cars cages for more than one reason. A used bike that runs and needs a little love will cost 500-1000 and take some learning and attention to keep reliable but it’ll get you to an interview or work.
Don’t look at RV’s look at trailers. An RV is just a crazy expense waiting to happen. You can start living in a trailer now if you can park it at your parents place then move into a RV park for 3-500 bucks a month and that covers all your utilities. Pay a wrecker to move it. That will run you 100-200 bucks but it beats the extra $$$ for an RV that can and will break down and need more $$$ to get it back on the road. And for what? To move it once or twice a year at the tops if your bouncing off jobs like a ping pong ball.
Don’t be afraid of a trailer with no title for two reasons. If a wrecker moves it their plates will void the need for a good plate, that means you don’t need to have paid for the title transfer. And if the owner can’t find the title the trailer is going to be stupid cheap because most people want to haul it around with their truck and they need plates in their name to pull that off. I bought a trailer for 500 bucks that the kitchen had never been used in. Had some broken glass and gross bead that needed to go but 2 days of cleaning and a trash can full of sliced up foam mattress later I had home with a kitchen, a shower, a place to sleep and a place to read.
Hell if you live in it for 2-3 months it’ll probably pay for itself and at that point when you sell it anything you get will be gravy.
I’m with Stealthy, READ! EVERYTHING!
Welcome brother, enjoy your stay.
The economy has been declining for years. All the TECH hype were lies from Institutions & banksters to scam students.
Life is a cesspool.
1. Most of humanity are slaves for the Elites
2. Pu$$y are just vile parasites that use menJust my opinion.
All my posts are my opinion.
I’m constantly searching for jobs 8 hours each weekday. And even with a degree like mine, which is highly sought after, it’s still very hard to find a job in this economy
Brother, I hear you. Currently looking for work in the IT field, and it’s a tough job market regardless of age or experience.
As for IT, I’m currently working towards getting a job in programming. Right now, I’m learning Java so that I can end up writing Android apps. Then when I actually end up finalizing my first few apps, I plan on posting them on Github to show employers my code and experience.
This is an excellent idea. I had a friend about your age in the same boat: Recently graduated from college but no real job experience. He wrote a Java chess program and it helped him land a job.
I’ve never thought of growing a beard or anything. I’ll try and start doing that as well. At least that way, it’ll make me seem a little bit older. I’m also starting to work out more and gain more muscle.
This is another good idea. But just make sure it is a legit beard. If yours is patchy, just go with something very short and well-trimmed. Appearance means a lot. Consider investing in a suit if you don’t have one. Something conservative. A navy blue one with brown or black dress shoes is appropriate. If you can’t afford a decent suit, get a nice pair of dress slacks, shirt, shoes and tie. It can go a long way in an employer’s first impression.
I’m getting plenty of job interviews. It’s just that they never call me back; and if they do, they end up telling me “they need someone with more experience.”
OK, this is telling. I have a lot of experience, but I am getting few call backs because I am older (I’ve learned to hide this on my resume). But you are in the prime age for IT, which is why you are getting a lot of calls. They already KNOW you don’t have a lot of experience by your resume.
This tells me that you need to improve your interview skills. There is a lot of information out there on the Internet about job interviews, both in articles and videos. You need to watch, read and practice. Look at common interview questions and practice your answers.
For my last interview, I spent hours practicing. I would write down answers, study them, then rehearse. The interview went well, and I have my fingers crossed.
Here is a tip from a friend on mine who is a CEO. I asked him, “What are you looking for when you ask ‘Tell me about yourself.'” (btw, this should be something that is 30 – 60 seconds that you have practiced where you sell yourself).
He said, “I don’t care what they say, I am just looking at how confident and convincing they are.”
With any question, show that you are a confident, competent, hard worker who will be an asset to the organization.
After the interview, send an email thanking the interviewer for the opportunity to discuss the position. Reiterate that you feel you can be a strong contributor to the organization. There are sample thank you letters on the web.
"You don't know a woman till you have met her in divorce court."Welcome, Charles B. You sound like you’ve got a really good head on your shoulders. You are incredibly lucky to have found the red pill so early in life. That alone is reason to celebrate!
The most consistent job advice I’ve seen in my life is this: It’s easier to get hired if you already have a job. So go find something, anything, so the job applications you fill out will say “Currently working at….”
Cheers!
I don’t know the original poster’s body type but adding more bulk is another way to look a bit older. Both fat and muscle work, although muscle is preferable. I’d recommend that OP hit the gym and have a more protein-rich diet. Strength training will increase testosterone whose effects will be both positive and negative. Testosterone will improve mood and confidence. It will also increase a man’s libido but it seems that OP knows how to deal with his libido already.
Charles, welcome!
Glad you found your way here. If I may suggest brother, try looking at the certification route. Yes, I know that test study material and the test themselves cost money, but it IS the industry norm. That coupled with a degree and I’m sure you’ll be picked up in no time. The “big” (and by big I mean initial certs) you want to look for are CompTIA A+, Security +, and Network+. Score one of those and get your foot in the door, after that work towards those certs that most readily draw your interest. I myself have CEH\ITIL v3\MCITP Win 7\ Network+\Security+ and a few more. I’m now working on my CISSP. I started with Sec+ and hit the ground running. All self taught, so I’m here to tell you it can be done.
Second HUGE thing, look for head-hunters, tech recruiters. TekSystems, CompQsoft,Ustechsolutions, Robert Half, etc. (email me if you need some POC’s). These guys usually can find you a gig that pays pretty decently, and the usually have short term jobs (2 weeks to 6+ months, temp and temp to hire) that will allow you to build your skill-set. Mind you some of these jobs may require you to travel, you’ll luck up though if you can get them to pay for it. When you get more well rounded and experienced, you can always go back and adjust your resume and request a higher salary (for any future task). Simply be reasonable, be able, and be willing, and you’ll go places (almost literally).
Also, have someone scrub your resume. Sell yourself. If needed be I can get your a format to run with. Long gone are the days were 4 page resumes filled the box. Now, it needs to look more like an elevator pitch. I personally pay someone to do my own and within days I’ve got an inbox filled with request for more info/ hire. And the lack of experience is only a small hurdle to overcome. Again, temp jobs, volunteer service, all of it matters.
Keep your head up, I promise you, it does and will get better.
Funny, isn't it? How women thrive on a mans time, attention and resources, while simultaneously telling him he isn't enough...
