Here’s an interesting list that may inspire you: The Oddest Jobs of 10 Literary Greats.

But my main thought is, surely you can do your crappy job by day and write by night?

There’s no reason at all not to have a “real” job other than too many writers’ over-inflated sense of self importance. (Something which LightBringer does not have.)

William Faulkner, for example, worked nights at an university’s power plant, Steven King was a high school janitor, Joseph Conrad was a merchant marine officer, and Kurt Vonnegut sold cars.

Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.

Hey brothers, I’ve been in this desert s~~~hole for about 16 months on this job. I make 50k a year, so not bad but not good, I really cant stand it anymore, way to desolate and hot, no friends etc. I really want to quit and focus on my scifi writing where my real talent lies. Its endless bulls~~~ at my work like people sabotaging my results, or lying about getting raises etc (I work as a field scientist)

Question: is it ‘stupid’ to quit a job in this economy?

I got about 30k saved up. I know the middle class ‘normal’ mindset is to do the safe thing and grind it out forever.

If I quit I’d be unemployed but not like i haven’t been that before. This job helped round out my experience where I look like Ive had a string of real jobs (I haven’t really) but I hate the field these days anyway. Thanks for tips guys.

It would be very unwise to quit your job in this economy unless you have already found another one. I’m not saying that you should grind it out forever because that would be agonizing, but you could grind it out and sell your books at the same time. If you are as good at writing sci-fi as you say you are, then you will be a millionaire and you will no longer have to work.

I'm married to the game, but she broke her vows.
