Hey brothers, I’ve been in this desert s~~~hole for about 16 months on this job. I make 50k a year, so not bad but not good, I really cant stand it anymore, way to desolate and hot, no friends etc. I really want to quit and focus on my scifi writing where my real talent lies. Its endless bulls~~~ at my work like people sabotaging my results, or lying about getting raises etc (I work as a field scientist)
Question: is it ‘stupid’ to quit a job in this economy?
I got about 30k saved up. I know the middle class ‘normal’ mindset is to do the safe thing and grind it out forever.
If I quit I’d be unemployed but not like i haven’t been that before. This job helped round out my experience where I look like Ive had a string of real jobs (I haven’t really) but I hate the field these days anyway. Thanks for tips guys.
50 K is nothing to sneeze at in this economy. I definitely would not quit. I hate my job too and think about quitting on a daily basis but I know that I cant find anything as good right now so I just grind it out. One thing I noticed since hating my job is that I just don’t give a s~~~ anymore if I get fired. I have a lot of cash put away in savings so if I get fired I can live for a few years without any worry. That makes the daily job stress more manageable. Kind of funny that you want to sell books because a co-worker at my job did the same thing. She couldn’t handle the stress anymore so she took a part time job (same profession) at a different company and opened a book store. So far I hear she is really happy.
Brother there isn’t a day goes by i don’t want to quit my job, and i’m guessing that goes for many of us here.
If you’re serious, use every bit of spare time you can to get something going on the side that can one day replace your job. Invest some of what you have, and have your money spread around in case the economy takes a major dive for a while.
What this freedom vehicle on the side for you will be, i have no idea. Just be grateful you were born a man and can do pretty much anything you set your mind to. You won’t get everything you want out of life, no one does. But you can still make a hell of a life for yourself.
Just will take a bit of work.
Ive been disengaged at work for the last 4 months with false promises of raises falling through etc. I hate the place I live, hate the city people etc. I want to pull out, regroup and figure out next move, because it isnt here.

Actually, just move. If you’re that unhappy, then f~~~ it. You’re not alone, and remember! Keep Punching! You’ll get there.
What kind of field science are you doing? Funny, when I was working in the field as a Wildlife Technician in the Sonoran Desert, I was the happiest I’d ever been.
Where do you live and what do you do?
LightBringer. Do not quit your job. The publishing business is one of the most monopolized industries around. Dead tree book companies are owned and controlled by the same people keep us down. Unless you have family in the publishing business, you are not going to get a story published.
The internet publishing is controlled by Amazon and it is also a wreck for new writers.
I know you may hate your job, but as other state, 50K is good. Especially in this economy.
If you have no spouse, nor kids, you can live very well on 50K.
And you state you already have 30K in the bank. That is a good sign. I suggest you stay at your job a few more years. Until you have enough to go minimalist. Then, quit and live on your own, while you write for you joy of writing.
I can vouch for what Faust just said. I know a lot of career, fiction authors really well, and their livings are constantly being threatened by their publishers. Most of them have long-running series that sell well enough for them to make a living on, but just barely. They are in constant fear that their most recent work will be the last one their long-time publisher buys. Like anything else it’s a numbers game. Your numbers go down, you’re out.
All of the authors I know — men and women — have a spouse with a solid day job.
Question: is it ‘stupid’ to quit a job in this economy?
It’s stupid to put this jackass topic in Mgtow Central and not Work, f~~~~~.
Listen to Faust. Booksellers are closing their doors at ever increasing rates. Chains, indies, it doesn’t matter, and internet sales are dominated by businesses like Amazon whose “infrastructure” you cannot hope to match.
The only indie bookseller I know who has kept afloat actually sells to book collectors either via online or at conventions. The collectors market is whole other world and one he only cracked because it had always been part of his “brick & mortar” operation.
Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
It’s a tough decision man. I can relate to your day job being a real grind of a motherf~~~er. Just dealing w/that on the regular can have a negative effect on your mood all the time.
On the other hand, i’m under the impression that most writers don’t make a whole lot (correct me if i’m wrong; i know s~~~ about the field). Except maybe if/when they hit it big? Anything else that you enjoy doing? I’m thinking of your fieldwork skills that you could do in a better location, to pay the bills/save $$$, while you do your writing as a side gig. Until you have enough to retire & pursue writing fulltime.
On the other hand, i’m under the impression that most writers don’t make a whole lot…
You’re correct, the vast majority of writers don’t make a lot so the vast majority also have “real” jobs. IIRC, one poll among the members of a writer’s association in the US reported their median income from writing as ~ $5000 a year.
Making matters worse, the publishing industry “converged” long ago, meaning they all now have SJW gatekeepers. Those editors overwhelming live in or around NYC, espouse the same political and social views, and basically inhabit a SJW echo chamber. Apart from work written by proven mega-authors like King, Koontz, Patterson, and others, all new work by new authors need to pass a SJW litmus test in order to be considered for publication. (That editorial groupthink is the primary reason the Hugo voting have been disrupted by the Sad/Rapid Puppies over the last few years.)
The results of this SJW convergence can be seen in the catastrophic drop in books sale. Consumers simply aren’t interested in what SJW editors demand they should be interested in, so memoirs by morbidly obese lesbians who believe they’re actually mermaids unaccountably “languish” on the shelves.
On-line “publication” and sales are one way for writers to circumvent the SJW hold on traditional publishing. “Books” sold in that manner, however, sell for a few dollars or less and, because they already exist in electronic form, can be easily pirated. Accordingly, successful on-line writers turn out copy in amounts that would make the old pulp and penny-dreadful writers gape in awe.
Do not date. Do not impregnate. Do not co-habitate. Above all, do not marry. Reclaim and never again surrender your personal sovereignty.
I’d find a job or keep the job you already have. Following your passions is great, but it’s definitely not worth risking your financial rewards. The only time you should ever follow your passion is if you can make money off it. Or if you have enough put back to do whatever the f~~~ you want.
In the words of Mike Rowe, don’t follow your passion.
Once you have a Fleshlight real vaginas become worthless.
I really want to quit and focus on my scifi writing where my real talent lies.
Real talk. Don’t quit your current job until you have another job lined up. It is a LOT easier to get a job when you already have a job, and get one more on your own terms. Employers will know if you’re unemployed, and will use that leverage to make you their bitch.
So stay at your current job, but polish up your résumé and start applying elsewhere everywhere. Meanwhile do your writing on the side and see if that takes you anywhere. if it works out, great, and if it doesn’t you’re not completely screwing yourself.
Find a new job before you quit. I’d suggest staying for two years.

You should try blogging or making youtube videos on your free time. You can research to see how you can make extra money on the side. It does take a long time to make a decent amount of money if you’re successful.

50k a year isn’t all that bad. If you are single and not supporting some c~~~ and linoleum lizards 50k can give you a comfortable living. I admit, I am with you about the heat. Can’t stand it. Before you quit any job make sure you have one lined up that pays you at least what you are getting now. Try to find one that you will find, at least, a little more satisfying. Do your book writing as a hobby until you are starting to make money at it. For every successful author making a comfortable living at writing there thousands of impoverished ones.
There are places online and publishers that you can do the publishing yourself. These places require that you put up the money to cover their cost to do the publishing, advertising and distributing. Authorship, successfully, is a fickle business and can result in poverty very quickly. Keep it as a hobby and nothing more until you can be certain that you will be successful. Also, ensure that you have plenty of money set aside for living and publishing expenses. Many times even when you are successful there can be long periods of drought between a book taking off and bringing in the money you need. One suggestion, use your scientific background to as part of your books. Good Luck.
Women's brains and vagina have one thing in common. There is nothing in there until a man puts something in there.
I think the vast majority of people who make a decent living, myself included, hate their jobs.
$30K isn’t enough of a safety net to quit in this economy.
My first response is – chase that dream. Why the hell not? Trying to get to your grave safely?
But my main thought is, surely you can do your crappy job by day and write by night?
