    Everything he said

    Great post Reality Bites.

Re-registered my bike yesterday, it’s my 3-year anniversary since I started riding. I was late to the craze because although my dad rode (and flew, and sailed… he lived before he got married…) for years, my mum’s brother was killed on a bike at 19, so the family in general was against it. Finally I thought what the hell and got a bike anyway. Never regretted it, but yes I’ve had close calls from cars who just don’t see you.

Computernerd – as others here have said, the fear will keep you alive. Get a bike and have fun by all means, but be aware you need a good attitude 100% of the time, and even then some idiot in a car can kill you before you blink.

Oh, I get that other drivers are dangerous, but generally speaking, if people weren’t in the cars texting and driving, and doing other stupid s~~~, while actually paying attention to the road, motorcycles would be safer than cars if only because most motorcyclists are forced to be completely aware of their surroundings.

The improved awareness is definitely a positive, but it ultimately means drivers should be driving better, it does NOT mean bikes are safer. Here in Oz we have areas in the top end with no speed limit so everyone will drive at the limit of fear and maintain their awareness better, it’s still dangerous. Bikes are FAR FAR less forgiving than cars, and there’s a world of difference between plowing into something with crumple zones and an engine block between you and the object, and hitting it helmet-first.

Oh I was portraying the classic gentlemen’s boxer type as meme for our quarreling.

Perhaps some context will clear up the sizing?

I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?

F~~~ YOU TO THE C~~~ THAT CREATED THIS

Oh, I get that other drivers are dangerous, but generally speaking, if people weren’t in the cars texting and driving, and doing other stupid s~~~, while actually paying attention to the road, motorcycles would be safer than cars if only because most motorcyclists are forced to be completely aware of their surroundings.

Most of the time, the only reason motorcyclists crash is either because they’re trying to be a show off, speed, or because of other drivers not paying attention.

No texting in the cases where cars pulled out in front of me that was pre-smartphone and they were actually looking at me. They undestimate your speed because of the size of a bike with a rider, it just does not appear to be approaching that fast.
Still a coach and some airbags around you would protect you better than a leather suit with protectors and a helmet, one is just more vulnerable, hence the awareness. Of course a rider is more focused while riding but sometimes it is just not enough.
All three of my crashes I was alone, so not showing off, I was within the speed limit and there were no other riders or cars…I could not see that spot of gravel while doing only 90Km/h (56 mls).. there´s always factors you can´t forsee.
In 10 years of being in contact with other riders I´ve never met one that did not have a crash at least once, of course none of them were fatal else I couldn´t have possibly talked to them. But I lost 3 friends in accidents with a motorcycle, I must say though they were all a little crazy by overestimating themselves. My crashes weren´t major either some scratches on the leather, a scratched helmet, parts bent or scratched on the bike… some abrasions, a little blood, nothing that could not be fixed or heal. One of my fwbs back then crashed and tore the ligaments in her right foot after a crash, had to pick her and the bike up with a trailer in the middle of the forest and take her to the hospital.
You are not scared that´s ok, but it is a good thing never to lose the respect about certain things and what could happen, that´s the best preparation you can have, besides protective clothing.

Ah, women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent. Friedrich Nietzsche
