If you want some small instrument inspiration, give a listen to Eddie Vedder’s “Ukulele Songs” CD. I play that thing a half dozen times a week, I love the music that much.

And now I have a ukulele story for you.

When I was working in the desert backcountry doing bald eagle nesting surveys, I met two bicycle touring college grads with music degrees. We met at the tiny public library in a dusty desert town, and I invited them to come visit our observation point camp. They were riding their bikes from San Fransisco to New York, and I didn’t expect they’d pedal the thirty miles out of their way to find our camp. But sure enough, a couple of days later they rolled into camp, tired and hungry. We fed them and made a fine campfire to share with them. Towards the end of the evening, the young man opened a beat up ukulele case and removed an equally beat up ukulele from it — he was going to play us a song.

Well, it took him so long to tune the thing that I have to admit I was not looking forward to what I was about to hear. I thought he really didn’t know the instrument and that my co-worker and I were in for a cringe-worthy performance.

I could not have been more wrong.

The moment he had the instrument tuned, the sweetest music you could ever want to hear around a desert campfire flowed from that ratty little pawn shop thing. IT was one of the most poignant and beautiful moments of my entire life.

Chaff, if you like small instruments but don’t have the ear, try a mandolin or something like that.

Wait, you been talking to my ex? SHE liked it in ear, and I can’t change my instrument.

Way cool big H! Still listening to it. It’s something about art and music that is just life changing. The masters are inspiring. I can’t do any of that! In a couple of threads, I mentioned that I spent ten years trying to find out if I could have an original thought…not tied to a book, language or person. I couldn’t! That’s why I’m concentrating on the music, I want to break open my own rock, and be the first in the world to see what is inside.

I would have picked up my guitar again but I sold it. So instead I’ve been practicing singing songs like American pie and others that demand pitch and note changes, I’ve been landing pretty much on key with good residence.

My brother can play like a motherf~~~er but everyone agrees I have the voice. I was a really loud kid with a voice that could carry so singing comes natural.

That’s what I’ve been honing down for the time being.

I hope you’re talking to Tower. I don’t know how to record & post like that. My grandson might, but he’s 17…too busy. I’d love to hear Tower.

I haven’t played a 12 string in 30 years! I used love playing Kansas “dust in my crotch” (my rendition).

About an hour ago I was singing Bo Diddley and pounding out beat on my counter top and floor. That’s what I do when I can’t get a song out of my head, I play it out!

I made one of these crazy things…omg what fun…daxophone

its an electric guitar pickup inside a block of wood, and the tongue vibrates with the bow drawn across.
