    You made the right decision.

The other thing to consider about Hawaii is that it is only paradise if you have a ton of money and live amongst those who also have a ton of money.

If you don’t fit the Hawaiian culture and are basically a mainland wealthy person the locals will not accept you. They call rich people from the mainland “Haoles”. You will be looked down upon in every aspect of Hawaiian Society outside of the tourism industry. Getting a job, respect in social settings and dealing with any sort of civil or government services is a nightmare.

Hawaii is a dichotomy of extreme wealth and extreme poverty. The economy is mostly all tourist based since many of the major agriculture farming operations moved to South America 30 years ago. Lots of poverty and drug abuse over there.

and the divide is growing every year, with the middle class shrinking and heading to the mainland for better opportunities.

I think a large part of not being accepted is not so much the locals looking down on you, but knowing that chances are you’ll be gone within the year. So it becomes a matter of- why invest a lot of time and energy in developing a relationship with someone when they’ll be gone by this time next year, never to bee seen again? Kinda like short term fling relationships. It’s not so much a race thing, but the knowledge that you’re likely a transient. The haoles that stay 5-10 years develop a lot better relationships.

everything moves slow in hawaii, civil/govt services bureaucracy is the norm.

But yeah, like I said, good fun to visit, not so much to try to make a living with an average income. That probably goes for just about every tourist destination place in the world. Most people I know working a decent middle class income still moonlights doing something else, it’s just about the only way to try to get ahead in hawaii. The people that don’t do this, and work a s~~~ty retail job lives with their parents, grandparents, grandkids in a multigenerational home. Like a 3br/2ba house will be housing 10+ people
