I don’t know how bodybuilders and lifters can stand gyms at all. I hate everything about them. This past month, I’ve been trying to get back on track pushing myself even harder with my workouts. Because of this, I’ve been looking at different gyms and comparing costs and gym policies.
Even if I could afford the enormous costs of gym memberships, their policies are f~~~ing s~~~. It’s like those gyms are TRYING to turn their place into a f~~~ing socializing cafe instead of a place where you’re actually serious about working out.
They have policies such as:
“Avoid taking pictures in work out areas, locker rooms or pool-it’s just creepy.
Foul language, grunting and yelling is discouraged- if it is that hard, perhaps back off a little.”
“Appropriate exercise attire is required. T-shirts must be worn.”
“There is a 25-minute time limit on all cardiovascular machines.”
“Do not bang dumbbells together while working out.
Chalk and powder are not permitted at any time.”And they even have more stupid policies such as not allowing deadlift weights to go over a certain weight in order to not break the floor or make loud noises.
When I have enough money saved up I plan on making my own home gym. Commercial gyms especially, f~~~ing suck. In the mean time, I plan on just toning my muscles and doing calisthenics.
Buy a home gym, dumb bells and punching bag and save your money on member fee’s.
THE PLANTATION HAS NOW TURNED INTO THE KILLING FIELDS . WOMAN ARE NOW ROLLING CAMBODIAN STYLE .
I agree. I bicycle the trail everyday. My deadlifts are a two year old. I stay in pretty good shape just playing outdoors. I like to ski, too. I’m with you. F~~~ Gyms. Take your membership dues and buy a nice mountain bike and a rack for the car.
"Don't follow in my footsteps...I stepped in something."
Agree. Cancelled mine last year and not looking back. Todays “gym” is nothing more than a hi tech social club. Women are primarily there to show off their asses abs t~~~ and attract as many Chads as they can. You might say they want as much “bang” for their buck as possible.
Certain gyms can be helpful by creating peer pressure to push yourself to the limit. I have a gym at home, but it’s not the same as some good weight room. Commercial network gyms naturally suck b~~~~. It depends on a gym

I gave up on gym memberships years ago. It used to be, when I was younger, high school and college years, you never saw a woman in a gym, other than YMCA’s. Now it seems these attention starved divas have become the majority in what used to be male dominated gyms. I’m sure there are exceptions but I gave up. So many of these gyms go out of their way to accommodate a bunch of f~~~ing c~~~s who just want to show their asses off.
Anonymous25Gyms suck. and that’s even the ones who don’t have stupid women only services and times.
It’s much cheaper in long run to buy your own weights and bench. All you need it a bench, a pair of dumbbell bars, a bench press bar and a bunch of different weights and size plates. As you get stronger you can buy more. Just make sure you get a decent sturdy bench. I got good stuff from a store called Decathalon, not too expensive
Brothers, watch out with gyms. Everything there is very heavy and it doesn’t take a lot to do damage to your spinal discs and muscles. A friend of mine had to have an operation on one of his spinal discs and then went through therapy. Gyms are too risky in my opinion. I’d advise you to work out at home and run outside and you’ll get the same results without paying for a membership. If the isn’t enough try one of the p90 programs.
Unicorns are mythical creatures, because they don't exist.
Ahhhh you must have gone to planet fitness. Agreed, there whole marketing strategy is geared towards people who rarely go but feel good about them selves for having a memebership.
I go there becuase it’s a half mile away from my place and 10 bucks a month. At 5am it’s fairly empty with a few regulars.
I thought what I'd do was I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes...or should I?
Find you a good black iron gym. stay away from “commercial” gyms.
Crossfit boxes that lean more towards Olympic lifting are a good place to look to.
I whould advise against anything crossfit.

Exactly,I started this way with a simple bench,
bar and weight set,a couple sets of dumb bells and worked my way up.Even buying resistance bands till you can afford some of that is a good thing (esp if you travel cause hotel gyms suck)
If you do cardio, just bike or run-no need for a gym
And they even have more stupid policies such as not allowing deadlift weights to go over a certain weight in order to not break the floor or make loud noises.
They are so full of s~~~,gyms have reinforced flooring just for this purpose,it’s mainly cause you might offend one of the delicate ‘barbies’ or a timid mangina with your manly exertions.
Going to a gym and complaining about the noise makes about as much sense as hanging out at a bar and whining about all the drunks there.
It’s a f~~~ing gym,if you don’t like to hear people working out-DON”T GO!
Lifes a bitch, but you don't have to marry one!
It all depends where you go, and what time you go at.
I work out to a commercial/national gym, and I can’t beat three floors of equipment including a pool and sauna for 29.99 per month with no contract and a locked in price. If they have B.S. rules like mentioned above, I wouldn’t know it because the “kids” that open and run the place in the mornings don’t bother anyone.I only go when they open at 5AM, and I’m showered and out the door by 7AM and on my way to work. At this time of the day, there are mostly just men and a few women that are there to train. The “pick-up” crowd comes in after work when they lower the lights and turn the disco b~~~~ on, but early in the mornings all is well.

Anonymous18Gyms suck, perhaps. But giving up on staying healthy and fit because of the rules suck worse.
By all means if you can set up a gym at your home or stay fit being active without weights – do so.
But to justify getting fat over time because the gyms suck isn’t gonna fly.
I am not dissing at you, but saying it how I see it.
Certain gyms can be helpful by creating peer pressure to push yourself to the limit.
That might be a benefit for the majority, but I’ve never caved into peer pressure before. It doesn’t affect me at all so I know it would never help me lifting weights.
It’s much cheaper in long run to buy your own weights and bench.
It is. In a year’s time saving, you’d have your own gym equipment where you could build your home gym and have it last for years.
Ahhhh you must have gone to planet fitness.
I did go to 1 planet fitness along the way checking different gyms. And yep, most of them suck.
I whould advise against anything crossfit.
I agree there. I avoid cardio and crossfit. Those things just seem pointless to me. The only cardio I do is swimming and I do it for fun.

The weights thing is total bulls~~~. If you have a deadlift anywhere, you’d expect at some point to have your floor be broken. There’s no getting around that. Unless you do your workout outside.
And the noise rules, I hate them with a passion. If I go to a gym, even a home gym, I expect there to be an extreme amount of noise. Even if it’s just two people lifting.

I plan on doing calisthenics for the most part. Once I get into extremely great shape, I want to be able to do s~~~ like this with just bodyweight alone:

It’s been my experience that the men that do the best at very challenging calisthenics/body weight exercises, as well as gymnastics, like you posted, usually have a naturally athletic build (IE: very low body fat, large round muscle bellies, well defined muscles including a 4-6 pack etc.) to begin with that can be built upon over time. Anyone can improve their athletic ability, but excelling to those demanding levels is not necessarily achievable by “everyone”, but hey go for it and it very well may happen, but any exercise you do is better then doing nothing!!!

I find that most men could actually do these exercises if they put an extreme amount of effort in. I’m almost to the point where I can do pushups with my legs in the air like the first guy in the video.
Not only that, bodyweight exercises are the same thing as lifting weights. The only difference being, is that if you want to keep bulking up with bodyweight exercises, you have to find more challenging moves than just adding more weight like you would with lifting.
For me, I find that lifting and bodyweight exercises are the best way to go. Including them both has already improved my health and helped me build some extra muscle.
I just avoid commercial gyms because of their s~~~ policies.

That’s great !! You have found what works for you, and you sound like you have the commitment to keep doing it! From the description of your push ups, you are already excelling towards your goals, Keep at it !!
Personally, I don’t really think it’s important what type of exercise one person prefers over another as long as they can find something that is challenging enough to provide some health benefits while providing enough personal satisfaction to keep the person doing it on a CONSISTENT basis. My only word of caution to everyone is don’t destroy your joints in the process.
Over the years, I have had friends that participated in: long distance biking, running, power lifting, body building, calisthenics, and/or cardio/weight lifting for fitness. They were/are all great guys doing what they wanted, going their own way if you will, and that’s kind of the goal for so many different things in life. Find what you like, make a commitment to it, and do it consistently.

Also there are at the Gym to flirt with Mr Alpha-Male, while they try and make you feel as though your less of a man and also uneasy, because you notice their sexual posturing and then they scowl at you (Mr Average) for having the audacity to look or just glance.
The gym I go to is the opposite on how you guys are describing yours. I go to one that is customer oriented, goal oriented, open 24/7, no one goes there to show off except to themselves, and there’s always someone there keeping the place clean and every last Thursday of each month they have a customer appreciation party with free food. When it comes to deadlifts, the only rule is they don’t want you to do it outside a squared area.
My gym has 2 floors of weights, cables, machines, a lap pool, 2 hot tubs, a resistance pool, a basketball court, steam room and sauna along with private shower stalls, a massage parlor, tanning spa, a supplement shop, internet café. In fact, last year they did a $2M full renovation to make the place look better. The only downside was when they redid t he locker rooms, because the men had to deal with construction and then they temporarily switched us in the women’s locker room, where they have a MUCH hotter steam room. I know women are cold-blooded, but that extra hot steam room of theirs was intolerable.
So I actually love my gym. It’s a gym that does care about their customers. So according to you guys, my gym is a rare place.
