Basically, MS continues to play games with the sucking of data from users of Windows 10 OS. Not that this hasn’t been posted myriad times before here, but a reminder is never a bad idea.

I am looking forward to having the money to switch most of the things I do to a kick-ass self-built Linux system (alas, I am nowadays pretty much skint). Still drooling over various Linux distros and various hardware that would run such distros at lightspeed.

I try and console myself that even my simple digital watch would make Turing jealous, but that doesn’t quite do it. I want the f~~~ing bridge of the goddamn Enterprise.

I wish MS still supported Win XP. I can’t imagine needing anything better than Win XP. Are the newer operating systems really all that much better or are they just a way to make more money by forcing people to upgrade???

are they just a way to make more money by forcing people to upgrade???

    Bingo. That’s pretty much it.

There is new software that is often released with expanded capabilities; because of various problems with Windows, Windows requires constant updated versions to run said software. On the other hand, MS would have no income if their process wasn’t built around this.

I was very fond of Windows XP, which I consider the best of the bunch. Windows 7 was also very good, and probably slightly better for tweaking and more complex tasks. It did have more capabilities. I currently use a Windows 8 laptop which I basically consider a dumb terminal, and use as such.

I like to think that various parties are currently working on alternatives to MS, but I keep liking to think that, and it hasn’t happened yet. Linux is a far superior system but for the fact that inertia continues to mean that most software is produced for Windows, so if you want most software you have to have Windows (yeh, yeh, Apple as well), so people buy Windows, so most software is produced for Windows . . .

Given that Android has overtaken the cell phone market, I have hopes for that back-drafting into PC land. We’ll see.

If you’re not familiar with it, I very much recommend the OpenOffice suite of office software instead of MSOffice. It’s free, quite stable, and has a fairly dedicated user/update group. It can also save everything in .doc format. It has slightly fewer capabilities, but is in my mind more intuitive and more reminiscent of older MSOffice packages.

There’s lots of incredible freeware and shareware out there. I also used to be very fond of Serif’s products (lots of bang for the buck) but they have a new line of stuff out that I’m less familiar with.

XP to me was just the best ergonomics and user interface design. I thought it was the most intuitive to use, and very very straightforward in layout. 7 wasn’t bad either, and I felt built upon, essentially, the layout of XP. 8 is a train wreck of ‘easier to use’ (it’s not) and even simple things like turning off that goddamn side menu requires going online and looking for answers because nothing is intuitive or makes sense. As far as I can tell, MS changed where many of the administrator things were and how they worked for the sheer joy of selling training.

Would it be fair to say then that the only reason MS stopped support for Win XP was to force users to upgrade? They must have known that many folks would have been satisfied to stick with Win XP and wouldn’t have upgraded if support had continued for Win XP…

Windows 3.1 was the best. No plugins, no smart drivers, and no bulls~~~.

Older operating systems in general were. They were better coded, less complex, used far less resources, didn’t have all the idiot proofing, didn’t depend on having an internet connection, didn’t have all the needless bling, didn’t phone home.

I hope in the future that it becomes possible to emulate most operating systems with a level 1 hypervisor. So you can use whatever you want without having to rely on aging hardware. The computing power is certainly already there to do it well in most cases.

We seem to be fast reaching a point were the average user will not be able to easily (financially) afford to upgrade. I currently do not want to pay for a Win 10 OS or a new machine that can run it smoothly.

MicroSoft it seems is going to force us poorer folks to eventually ditch them altogether…

Well really the PC market at home is not really taking off like it use to. Most people just use their PC for some stuff, but the smart phone took over.

THe thing that you need to know is that there really is no reason to bother upgrading unless you can’t use a web browser on your platform.

There was some real reason to upgrade, like having the need to watch cat videos in 1080P, and other driver updates, but for the most part, most of the changes, most users don’t really seem to care about.

The only reason for me to upgrade my PC will be for gaming.

Gotta have these Directx10 drivers! 🙂 Think they are on DX 12 now. But it still is not light night and day difference from 10. Still, its nice.
