I suppose it depends where up north. I live in Massachusetts and Florida seems much cheaper when you consider taxes.
Massachusetts fully exempts Social Security retirement benefits, while taxing most other forms of retirement income.
Florida has no state income tax, which means Social Security retirement benefits, pension income and income from an IRA or a 401(k) are all untaxed.

I have been divorced for 12 years and I am loving my freedom. But similar to Awakened, I have a s~~~ty job that I hate. I may be able to pull off retirement in 3 years at 62, move to Florida, buy a modest house outright and get a PT job taking tee times for $10-$15 an hour. Then enjoy the warm weather and have no f~~~s left to give. I have been hard-core saving for 8 years and executing minimalist philosophy, for example, cutting the cable cord. Cheers!
