Man don’t even get me started on this s~~~. I may not agree with what General Lee stood for, but he is a figure in history and should be treated with respect and his statues shows stay up. Their mad at the South for having the confederate flag, hell I didn’t know it was a problem until liberals said it was. But ok, put it in a museum.

I have to run for office one day man. Look at Congress now, most of those folks are old as s~~~. Gotta replenish the ranks eventually. I would much rather me and people like me, be in charge, than to give up this country to people who think and act like this chick and liberals like her.

Nobody said a thing about General Lee, or the flag for over 100 years. Now all the sudden under the Obama administration there started this massive outcry. What’s even more hilarious about these dopey bastards equating the flag to racism, and the south is – the flag as it’s known now didn’t even appear until near the end of the war. The confederates flew a number of different flags over the course of the war and the “southern cross” was never even an official flag endorsed and used by the confederacy.

The Stars and Bars my friend refers to the 1st National Flag of the Confederacy, which coincidently, is my avatar. There were three national flags by the way. Another one, the Bonnie Blue flag, could be considered an unofficial national flag of sorts as it was flown over some state houses in the Confederacy early on before the First National Flag was introduced.

The particular flag in question, and what the “lady” in the video is responding to, is the Battle Flag. It was designed by P.G.T. Beauregard to fly above confederate units because the 1st National Flag looked too similar to the US Flag and caused confusion on the battlefield. The Confederate Battle Flag actually made its debut in 1861 and was most commonly associated with Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.

Lee was opposed to slavery: “There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil.”

However, he believed that slavery should be weeded out gradually instead of all at once so that the southern economy would not go bankrupt. He fought for the south because he believed in their right to secede from the union, not because he was pro-slavery.

The confederate flag stands first and foremost for the right to secession, not for slavery. Black men fought in the Confederate army bearing this very flag! Many Confederate soldiers were against slavery, and many Union soldiers were in favor of it! So it’s a huge simplification to say that the flag stands for slavery. Let me suggest you pick up The Confederate Reader by Richard Harwell. It’s an anthology of primary documents dating from the period immediately before and during the war. As such, it contains what Confederate military leaders, politicians, and plain old “Joes” thought about the succession, war, and slavery.

Because it has nothing but primary documents from the era in question, it contains none of the Lost Cause apologia from later in the 19th Century or the Jim Crow/ anti-Civil Rights mythology from the 20th Century.

You’re going to be very surprised when you read the various succession ordinances and learn what Southerners in 1861 thought was the reason for their rebellion and war compared to the excuses they made for that rebellion and war decades later.

I’ll give you a hint: It wasn’t states’ rights.
