Here’s one for you all:  Keep in mind I work at a university.  I just now checked my work e-mail to find out that because I forgot to get back to one teacher who misplaced their evaluation documents (I distribute these to literally every teacher in our department every semester), I’m going to be receiving a “formal warning” from my higher-up, according to her.  She says if I have no way to defend my case, then that will be the reason for my warning.

My only reason is in the midst of tons of other paperwork and tasks, I simply forgot to respond to one e-mail.  I had dozens of others I DID respond to, but this ONE e-mail will be the reason my job is at stake.

I probably work harder than any of them in that office (a mostly female office that just hired two men about 2 weeks ago), yet my higher up seems to always “conveniently” catch me when I’m taking a quick few-second break, and will make the assumption that I’m “not busy.”  I work the front desk, so everyone can walk past me and easily get a quick peek at what I’m doing as they pass by…which is one of the few things I dislike about where I’m working (besides the obvious gynocentric environment).  The senior secretary in our department, who performs similar work to myself, is stowed away in a back office somewhere and is left alone most of the time.  I go back there and most of the time I see her on Facebook, for goodness’ sake.

I got in trouble for having Wikipedia opened when I was simply using it to find out what country a city I was data entering was located in!  (I need the country as well, which is why I was on it in the first place.)

To be honest, I’m beyond livid right now.  Am I overreacting here, or is it because I’m starting to see the female favoritism oh so rampant in the office now?

    Megachris%:

After having been an instructor at a post-secondary institution, nothing surprises me any more.  I endured years of harassment and bullying from certain administrators and they looked for any reason to make my life miserable.  It didn’t matter how trivial or unimportant it was, I usually got hauled into my department head’s office and given a thorough dressing-down.  Towards the end of my time there, it took a nasty turn and I was frequently threatened with severe disciplinary action and even dismissal.

From what you’ve described, it looks like someone really would like to give you the boot.
