Been at my job for 8 years. I’ve absolutely dreaded going in for the last 5 years. Chronically understaffed, micromanagement style from unrealistic empty suits despite my top production among peers, and a cult-like company culture.

Pay is decent enough to pay mortgage (19 years left), car (2 years left), utilities, and a few hundred left for fun each month. 5% match on 401K. I don’t have any liquid savings but enough money in retirement to pay all my bills for at least 3 years if I have no income.

I still feel grateful to have a job in a tough economy (The low unemployment rate and positive monthly job reports are bulls~~~) but I HATE this job and I’m about to say f~~~ it.

Do my brothers here have any experience in quitting a job without another one lined up…good or bad?

Generally, it is not a good idea, unless the job is literally killing you and/or you have the funds to survive for more than a year of unemployment. It is best to have something else lined up before you leave your current job. I did this once and it lead to me nearly being broke and without work for over a year. Even when I found a job, it was a crappy retail job (which I was probably lucky to get when I did as it was in October of 2008). It took me a couple years after that to get out of debt and back into a reasonably stable financial position.

If you do they win. I will not let them have the satisfaction of me leaving without taking care of myself. If they fire me, cool, I get unemployment, if I quit it’s my f~~~ you money out the door. I want to annoy them as much as I can. F~~~ them. do they care about you? NO.

Don’t give up and don’t give in!!!! Keep your cash unless it is an absolute emergency to get out.

Good job on your finances, you are on it. I give you the Market~~~cher seal of approval.

Thanks a lot for the advice, Watcher. I saw your cover letter in the other thread, looks great.

We’re in the same industry too. I’m retail loan officer.

Don’t do it. I’ve had many jobs I hated but at the end of the day I hate poverty more than any job I’ve had. Your tough–stick it out but be on the lookout for another job. Ghost as much as you can AND this is an important survival tip–Under NO circumstances invest emotion in a job you hate or it will destroy you. Its only a paycheck.

Sounds like you need a break from it all. I suggest the following.

    – Put back money for liquid savings. Even if you need to cut back on 401k to do it. You need enough to get you by for a few months.
    – Start looking for another job. See what is out there and test the waters. You might be surprised and find something good in a short amount of time. However, if you want a change even a lower paying job might do you good.
    – If you get a job offer accept it with a delayed start date. Use any excuse you need to tell them.
    – Before starting new job quit old one and take time off between gigs. Use liquid money you saved to pay the bills while between checks. A month of relaxing will do you good.

Just remember not to breath a word of this plan to anyone. Someone will repeat it and management will find out and ruin your plan somehow. I know some would say just slack off and hope they fire you so you can draw unemployment. Might work but the mental toll it takes on psyche is probably not worth it. That and a lot of companies don’t give severance packages anymore AND they contest unemployment if you p~~~ them off.

Leave on your terms and don’t linger.

It’s great advice like this that makes this the best website ever made, Pistol. I really appreciate. Submitted 2 resumes after work today.

Yes, Yes and Yes!!…..BUT…. Be careful and do your homework on the new companies. It is better to stick with the evil you know than that which you know not of.

Try listening to Brian Tracy. it may help to re-frame the perspective while you’re at work.

Unless you’re an entrepreuneur, every job becomes the same.

If you do quite and miss a mortgage payment or two, the bank will offer to refinance you to bundle in the missed payments, and then you’re back to 30 years and paying interest only again. Might be better to sell the house, and rent small with your cash out.

HR departments I worked with refused to hire people who quit their job already. They were considered stupid or unstable (got angry and rage quit).

A few years back I fired my boss and took my job with me. I started my own service company. It was tough going, but I broke even and then got out and retired. Check out resources at the Small Business Administration. It’s a big leap to be your own boss, and not to be entered into lightly.

Just wanted to give you fellas an update.

Got offered a job and accepted!!! I start in a month. I’ll put my two weeks notice in a couple weeks. Set it up so I get a week off to bask in my “getting out of this hell hole” glory.

Slightly less base pay but more potential for commission. Better 401K match and overall plan. Better health insurance and completely company paid. Drive is 3 times shorter than my current commute.

I appreciate all the advice from he wiser and more experienced than myself on here.
