“Looks and feels” new wave engineering has failed again!

The structure looks like a long span I-beam, but without the “I”, you can see straight through it. I’m interested to see what moron sacrificed structural integrity for modern aesthetics? It looks like pre-stressed concrete that couldn’t handle the “stress”.

Any thoughts on your federal tax dollars at work building abortions like this?

I read they used a new kind of construction technique. Maybe they should have stuck to the tried and true methods? This is the kind of thing I thought only happened in South Korea. I read about one of their new department stores that collapsed once…blamed it on corrupt building inspectors. This certainly doesn’t make America look all that great.

Our engineering is GREAT! We have the Railroad system built in the 1800 from granite and steel! Everything is still where it was erected over a hundred years ago! No big chunks of broken concrete spalling from corroded re-bar! Large granite blocks stacked one on top of the other!

That thing was an eye sore. The engineering firm could not be reached for comment. I am willing to bet a gender diversity quota advanced someone unqualified.

If you want to use concrete and rebar, you have to use simple shapes and perform regular maintenance. If you want something that’s not going to crush 300 people before it’s even open, you use steel. American steel. Designed by a man who understands how to build bridges, not someone who has played a physics simulator on an iPhone.

    $14 million dollars!

I could have done it for under $300 k with some pressure treated lumber and used ski-lift cable! And it would look cool as f~~~!

As a designer this story is very interesting to me. Agreed with @joetech. Things like this happen in developing countries. India, North Korea, Africa. For the life of me I can only wonder what were the engineers were thinking. Did they forget a screw somewhere??? Since It was only a foot bridge, It wouldnt have need the integrity of something holding holding vehicles. Whatever firm built this is officially out of business.

This is very bad for everyone involved.

Have you guys seen the movie Idiocracy ? I swear that movie is a look into the future of society being ruined by idiots. I think there might even be a scene in the beginning where a bridge collapses or something disastrous like that.

Beat me to it! I can’t WAIT to hear who designed this piece of s~~~! Who caved into the “function follows form” philosophy of the new age! Several people dead, more sacrifice to the alter of egalitarianism!

I’m praying that a woeman designed / built this! Even if so they’ll cover it up.

    Companies involved:
    MCM
    FIGG Bridge Engineers
    Bolton Perez and Associates
    BDI Engineering

Time-saving technology used to build the bridge
A statement from the university said that Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technology was used in the construction of the pedestrian bridge.

Jorge Munilla, president of MCM, told CNN affiliate WSVN on March 10 the bridge’s construction was the realization of a dream. Munilla spoke as the bridge’s span was installed over the street.

“Now that dream is becoming reality,” he said. “The reality is, what makes this job so unique is that we built this bridge on the FIU campus over the last 6 to 7 months.”

    Some dream!

Where are the idiots screaming at the sky to ban bridges? Where are the school children when we need them to walk out of school?

Why aren’t the talking heads on TV telling me how to think?!?!

Since It was only a foot bridge, It wouldnt have need the integrity of something holding holding vehicles.

In the German Army we we forbidden to cross bridges by marching in lock-step.

Mechanical resonances can bring all kinds of buildings down and if this thing had a 53 meter swing without any center support or post, anything – especially an earthquake or hurricane – can make it shatter. Or maybe a strange “acoustic constellation” of the motor vibrations of the cars that were waiting underneath the bridge?

This bridge looked pretty on the drawing board and was most likely appealing to the aesthetic feelz of women…

In July of 2018, this honey pot forum was sold out to an unidentified NPC sock puppet and troll organization. Most independent thinkers and writers migrated to other MGTOW forums as a result of the never-ending infighting and deliberate trouble starting caused by members who were given "carte blanche" by the admin to do whatever they want. Before my departure, I only left a few thousand cat pics here to comfort and ridicule the feminist owners who now run this place. Their background agenda is to make MGTOW look like a club of losers the public eye. And during the course of 2019, they actually managed to destroy almost all other MGTOW venues as well. Here is the truth about "theindependentman.org" aka "TIM" which was created as an extended workbench to further divide the community. When you register, they install a spyware Zombie cookie on your browser that does all kinds of things the user does not know of: http://www.filedropper.com/essay-on-the-removal-of-malware-cookies-used-by-tim

Absolutely (walls of Jericho) like the Tacoma Narrows Bridge “galloping gurdy”.

Arch is the strongest and oldest long span engineering design that was simple and works, that was until mass produced steel was achieved giving us suspension with tension forces never achieved before.

Thank god for Bessemer! The man that invented the blast furnace!

I love it that the oldest standing bridge like structures are stone arches!
    Keep it simple son.

I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.

I do wonder if the failure was due to an inherent deficiency in the design, or if it was because of improper assembly procedures? In other words, did something happen during the construction that caused stress on components beyond the design basis?

Designed by a man who understands how to build bridges,

You can build a hundred bridges, and nobody will call you a bridge builder.

    But suck one c~~~ and a c~~~~~~~~~ forever….

[An old one, but I thought it fit]

btw – Miami? No reason to design for extreme wind loads or anything? Gotta imagine the code is to survive a Cat 4 at least. The failure gap for this one is unbelievable.
