I’m still a number of years away from retirement, but keeping a casual eye on potential retirement States.
Arizona was high on my list (and the warm climate is a big plus to me), but since they’re becoming a blue State, I figure their economy and cost of living will eventually go downhill and make it much less desirable to live in. Mind you, I’m trying not to make this a decision based on politics, but have to consider the realistic economic ramifications of socio-political policies… and not just now, but several years down the road. I don’t want to retire to a State where the economic s~~~ hits the fan a few years later.
Nevada is now high on my list, but noticed that they joined the lawsuit again the President’s efforts to secure our border. How do you guys view this vis-a-vis what it may mean for that State’s political/economic direction?

Personally, I’m kind of the mindset that says find the PLACE THAT YOU WANT TO LIVE OUT THE LAST YEARS OF YOU LIFE, and if you Can afford it without it being a stretch then move there and just keep walking away from the Matrix.
The years GO FAST and we don’t get a second chance. So, if you really want to live in a certain place then I wouldn’t let potential political winds sway me.

I lived in AZ back in the 90’s. It was alright until the exodus from California hit in ’93. One U-haul place got more than 100,000 trucks in one week. Those bastards ran from Cali and ruined that entire state.
Things change, and fast. You can’t base your decisions on what is today nor can you predict how a state will turn out to be in ten years.
I won’t recommend any state as the whole of civilization is crumbling before our eyes and the insanity is going from bad to worse each and every day.
If your pension follows, go to Asia or on one of those islands like Guadeloupe or Martinique. Stay away from big cities and look for small communities, the smaller the better. I’m in a small village now and I have to tell ya, I’ll never move back to a city.Don't let them Blame, Shame or Tame you!

#GenderSegragationNow!I thought about Nevada, Texas,Florida, and Kentucky. North & South Carolina are already built up a lot which drove their RE prices wayyyyy up. Texas was just too damn hot for me! Florida is crowded, you drive 20 miles to everywhere unless you live in the major cities. Kentucky was well,…… Kentucky!
Despite the taxes I figured to stay right where I am. It’s rural, quiet, I know the property already, and “life” is a short drive away.
I got a few years yet,so nothing is set in stone. Nevada sounded good until I heard how bad the radiation fallout is on the west coast from that damn reactor melt-down in 2011. I don’t need radioactive crap passing through my body giving me Leukemia in my Golden years.Marry again, Hell NO ! ( Even JESUS was hung on a cross just once)
My suggestion would be to scout a place where you can afford to buy some rural, remote property. You have to be able to get something like 2-4 acres because you don’t want neighbors. You buy that land, you move there, you spend your next several years developing your estate, and either A) You have enough developed to be self-sustaining or B) You have enough property that when the state comes along to seize your land, they have to pay you way more than you paid for the land when you bought it. Cash your check, retire in Singapore.

I could never live in a city. I can’t stand being around people. I don’t even like having a neighbor living up the road from me. People are potential problems and annoyances. The more time I spend alone, the happier I am. I hang out with certain people once, maybe twice a week, but then I’m done and I want to get back to my solitude and peace.
If I had the money, I’d buy a decent amount of acreage with lots of trees as far from civilization as possible and plop a small house right in the middle of it with a very long driveway to a rural road. Even if the closest store for supplies was an hour away, that’d be fine with me. I’d stock up and keep the pantries and freezer full.

I agree with others that you definitely want an rural over urban situation. It’s the cities that are all looking to turn to socialism and steal what you’ve earned up for yourself. You’re also going to save on property taxes. You do want to avoid SALT as much as possible, as they will still tax you on that, but that might be a secondary decision to preferred climate. With Trump no longer allowing SALT to be fed tax deductible, I wouldn’t bee too surprised to see state taxes start to be less of a factor. The liberals/dems say they are against this, but they also clearly want to centralize power to the federal government.
Ok. Then do it.
Thanks everybody for your thoughts (so far)! I kinda enjoy indulging in (realistic) retirement dreams every now and then.

I can’t even stand looking at them. I know how someone can f~~~ up your entire day – when it’s not your entire life – just because his/her ass is itching for release he/she cannot get at home.

Some states don’t tax parts of your retirement income, so you have to pay attention. For example, Hawaii has a very high tax burden, but it doesn’t tax pension income or Social Security. All of the sudden it becomes more affordable compared to a state that is cheaper to live in but has high taxes and doesn’t let you back those income items out.
Kiplinger has a good website where it comes to retirement and taxes. It may be worth a look.

For my next move, I’m torn between moving to a small city or looking more in a rural area.
When I was single, I have found it EASY to Ghost in a small city, My neighbors didn’t bother me or get in my business, and I didn’t interact with most people that lived around me. I didn’t know anyone else in this city and when I went home nobody bothered me.
In this small city; the Real estate was much more affordable and the property tax rate was also much lower as compared to rural areas and with city water and sewer I didn’t have the issues/expenses with my own well or septic. I also had all the conveniences within a short driving distance as compared to longer commutes for work as well as everything else.
At the time, for me life was easy, convenient, and affordable living in a small city.

You just have to be careful not to go too small. I grew up in a town of about 5,000. If you did something on Friday night everyone in town knew about it by the time church was out Sunday afternoon. I may be a little off here, but I would think a small city of 50,000 to 100,000 would be big enough to ghost while still being large enough to have a decent hospital and some decent restaurants in it. Live like 5 miles out of town on a few acres, sounds pretty damn good to me.

I’m retiring out of the country. Most likely in Panama in a beach town cottage.
Anyway communication, real open communication, is not wanted or even required in a relationship. Women cannot handle fully open and honest communication, plus most perceive it as a weakness on the part of a man. All that is required is catering to her whims, and even then nothing is certain. There is no way to be sure of having a successful relationshit with a woman. MGTaoist

That sounds interesting. What kinda cash do you need to have annually to afford that ?

Northern Florida is really nice. The panhandle is still quiet, not crowded, still very southern, and they intend to keep it that way. Great spacious beaches, vast regions of wilderness, great golf, fishing, seafood. Tallahassee with Florida State U has a lot in the way of sports and the arts. Weather can get cool, even cold in the winter. Most winter days are nice. It was in the 80’s today. Summers are HOT!!

Serious question…when was the last time you ate a banana?
https://www.strangerdimensions.com/2013/05/06/how-much-radiation-is-in-a-single-banana/
If you had 1 gallon of liquified bananas and 1 gallon of Fukushima contaminated water from the west coast, the naturally occurring K-40 in the bananas is more radioactive than the water…and some of that contamination was already there pre-Fukushima anyhow.
You’ve been getting naturally occurring radiation your entire life from things you can’t avoid…a 0.2% or some ridiculously tiny increase from Fukushima fallout over what you’d normally get anyhow isn’t going to make a difference in your health.

Having been born in raised in America, it kind of sucks to say this, but this is the smart move these days. Your money will go 2-3x as far after differences in cost of living and currency conversion, and you can enjoy being somewhere where terms like “toxic masculinity” and “white privilege” aren’t in the media daily, and you aren’t constantly accused of being things like racist and sexist just because you aren’t a brain dead liberal.
