I haven’t celebrated holidays since I was a kid.
Anyone celebrating?
What are you doing?
Should I order a ham or some s~~~?
Resident cynic.
MMMMM how about spending some time contemplating the resurrection of Christ and what it means.
Anonymous1I don’t celebrate any of the Holidays anymore. I take a couple minutes and pay my respect to the tradition, but thats about it. I grew up Christian, but as I got older I realized that all of the Holidays are carry over from Pagan times and as such have lost all their original meaning.
Christmas was Saturnalia/Yule, St. Patricks day was Liberalia. Easter is obviously named after the Germanic Pagan Goddess Eostre, and her symbol was the rabbit.
Halloween (All Saints Day) was the old pagan festival Samhain. All of the stuff I was told as a Child was a lie. The reasons for the Holidays were all bull s~~~. It’s hard for me to respect them, knowing what I know.

^ Not allowed to.
That be racist and shiiiit.
=D
You are correct though, good sir.
Are you doing anything to celebrate?
Church service, easter eggs, ham?

It’s simple. Easter was a pagan Holiday. When the people converted, they Christianized it. They lied and said Jesus came back to life on Easter Sunday. It doesn’t make any sense because the actual date of Easter changes year to year. Obviously if Jesus died on a certain date, it was not recorded in the Bible. No one knows what date Jesus really died on.
but as I got older I realized that all of the Holidays are carry over from Pagan times and as such have lost all their original meaning.
This is pretty much the mind-set I’ve evolved/or devolved into.
If what these holidays, on a specific date of the calendar, are actually assigned value to you as an individual and your belief, than it has far more meaning than the individual day.
And, I’m not the type who goes to church once or twice a year only on the holidays as a symbol.
I know atheists who do this.
I will probably however listen to one of my favorite preachers sermons on a podcast today.
I have a carne asada taco in the fridge…Ham sounds good though.
Mashed potatoes….I like mashed potatoes.

Anonymous1Honestly, it would make more sense to Celebrate Jesus Death and Resurrection during Halloween. It would match the darker themes of Halloween. Easter was an old Fertility cult about sex and procreation. Nothing at all to do with Rising from the Dead.
Halloween would have been a much better choice. Especially since “Rising from the Dead” technically makes you a Zombie. It fits right in with Vampires, Ghosts, and Goblins.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say when Jesus was born. Many old Gods(although this is refuted by some sources) were born on the 25th of December ie Horus for example. No-one knows when Jesus was born, nor cared until the 4th century during Constantine’s reign. In fact, the Bible gives a little clue into the season of which Jesus was born, and it wouldn’t likely have been in the Winter.

Not everyone believes Pistol.
Having said that, it does seem to me that the commercialisation of all these Christian holidays is not a good thing.
I mean bunny rabbits and chocolate eggs-wtf
Anyway I know you are a believer and have faith so I will wish you a happy, peaceful and thoughtful Easter.

Yes, that is correct. When the Europeans converted to Christianity the common people still kept practicing their old Holidays and Traditions.
The Priests and Bishops could not get them to stop celebrating their Holidays. They ended up compromising with the people and allowing them to keep their Holidays provided they celebrate some aspect of Jesus Christ on those days instead.
This has led to common misconception that Jesus Christ was really born on December 25, and he really died on Good Friday and was resurrected on Easter Sunday. Of Course, it’s nonsense for obvious reasons.
There was actually a big controversy over this in Venerable Bede’s History of England. The Irish Bishop kept Easter based on the old Druid calculation. The Roman Bishop had their calculation. They almost excommunicated the Irish over this discrepancy. Lol.

Did they convert to Christianity willingly, or were they forced? Same as Islam. There are reputed to be 1.6bn Muslims, how many really believe lest they be executed…

As I stated, Bunny Rabbits are a fertility symbol associated with the Germanic Goddess Eostre. Eggs are also a fertility symbol. Its all about sex and procreation during Spring Time. Same thing with May Day and the May Pole.
Alright, so I take it no one ITT so far, except Pistol Pete is celebrating Easter… =/
Back to the original question for new posters ITT:

If so, what are you doing?
Should I buy a ham?

The Irish seem to have converted willingly. The Saxons, not so much. After all Charlemagne executed them for not converting. Same thing with the Vikings, they did not like Christianity impinging on their world view and ancient traditions.

True, my people are Lutheran, not Catholic, but many still believe in the old customs and Gods.

Right, I was raised Irish Catholic. Some of the Saints like Saint Brigid are based on old Pagan Gods. That was fairly normal for European Conversion. The Old Gods would become Saints and you could still pray to them, but they had a much diminished role under the Christian Hierarchy.
