i like the op’s answer was better. i’m not ass kissing some humpty dumpty gynosaur just because she wants to feel young in her 50’s. walking on eggshells to avoid hurting her feelings is for manginas. she can complain to the boss and he can yell at me all he wants. if he fires me, wrongful dismissal. the law says you have to id everyone. the boss is above you but not above the law.
I fail to see how saying ’21’ is kissing her ass. I’m not saying you look at her and pretend you’re actually evaluating her or saying it in some sort of flattering way. Don’t smile while you say it. Don’t even look at her when you say it, just say it and move on. In this context, it’s a it’s a trap question, and it deserves a ridiculous answer that ends the conversation.
How much do you think I weigh?
100 lbs.And although I understand the frustration with customers in retail, I do think part of the job is salesmanship. That doesn’t mean you need to lie and kiss ass, but it should me that you don’t say things that discourage the customer from coming back, even if they deserve it…unless you’re the owner
Ok. Then do it.

How much do you think I weigh?More than your sister/mother!
I had several encounters like this back when I worked in a convenience store; women getting upset when I carded them for buying cigarettes. I remember one in particular…
A woman came into the store and wanted to buy cigarettes. I asked for her ID. She said she didn’t have any ID on her. I told her I couldn’t sell her the cigarettes. She got upset and told me that she drove to the store, thus proving herself as old enough to buy cigarettes. I cheerfully told her that great, then she must have her driving license somewhere to show me. She hesitated and then said she didn’t bring it. I told her that if she went around driving her car without her license on her, she had bigger problems than me refusing to sell her cigarettes. She stormed out, and later on complained to my boss. I told him my side, and he backed off, though he told me to act more “lenient” in the future. Naturally, I didn’t. And a good thing, too, because around that time they started doing undercover stings.
Stick to your guns, men.
There lies serenity in Chaos. Seek ye the eye of the hurricane.
I’ve dealt with customers like that. I think the best thing to do is not to say to many words. Just keep the conversation business like. If you can call a manager for help, do it before you lose your cool. Once you let these trolls get the best of you, you’ll lose your job or promotion or the trust of your supervisors. The trolls are happy to f~~~ up the world and take no responsibility for consequences. Sometimes you just have to humble yourself long enough to get a better job. That’s life.
Here’s another thing I know about life:
WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND.
If this troll continues to disrupt people’s lives (I’m sure you’re not the only one she’s p~~~ed off), someone’s going to put her in her place (eventually).

I saw that I could put an end to your outrages by pronouncing a single word in my mind. I pronounced it. The word was ‘No.’" (Atlas Shrugged)

She was offended by THE TRUTH. Sorry, the government can’t pass a law against one’s decision to be a fool.
