I don’t know about you guys but I’ve noticed something that I had never noticed before. As many of you know I’m an insomniac so I lay awake at night listening to the likes of Robert Nori, Clyde Lewis, Art Bell and the rest. Well the last one goes off the air about 0300 and there is a show that comes on right afterwards hosted by some woman named Lash. And I noticed something odd.

The speech pattern of Ms. Lash is extremely fast. The tempo or cadence of her speaking is vastly accelerated beyond the males on radio. At first I thought this was particular just to her—but I’ve listened to other female hosts and hands down they speak at a much accelerated rate over ANY guy I’ve listened to. So then I started watching videos of various men/women speaking and timing the number of words per minute and almost uniformly the women speak words at a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1 of the men.

Now at first I dismissed this as just too much sugar or caffeine but I don’t think that is it. My hypothesis is: They believe whatever they are saying is THE most important thing a person CAN be saying at any given moment and therefore it must be blasted out as quickly as possible. And due to the speed of the speech no interruption is permitted. Thus they have center stage for the duration. I note further that men speak in between breaths taken and women seem able to speak while breathing in OR out.

Frankly I find listening to any woman speak irritating and annoying but turning up the speed at which they vomit out the garbage from their mouths really makes it intolerable. If anyone has an alternative thoery to explain this phenomena I’d like to hear it.

Never dug so deep. But remembering the first grade I can confirm that boys read out loud faster than girls and make fewer mistakes.

Quantity over quality. To women speaking slowly is ‘dull’ and patronising. They prefer fast ‘nice-sounding’ social waffle, what is actually said isn’t of great importance.

There are very few female voices I can tolerate.
Pros know that a mike, like a camera, is different than real life.
You must speak slower than normal for it to play to the mike.

Why do you think when a man speaks slowly or normally to a female and it’s clear and understandable it refered to as “mansplaining”!

I have had quite a bit of training at public speaking and presentation skills and slowing speech down is seen as the professional thing to do. It’s actually quite hard to do but newsreaders and radio hosts generally manage it quite well.

Natural speed of speech is much faster and especially as you say when the speaker doesn’t want any interruptions or is enamoured by the sound of their own voice.

Women naturally speak quickly as they are not paying attention to the people listening. Blokes in conversation generally pause, think and consider their words while most women just spew verbal diarrhoea.

With groups of blokes generally one person is speaking at a time. In groups of women you often see all them speaking about different things at the same time and at great volume.

However, when women are speaking to blokes they can’t seem to get the rhythm correctly and they seem to think they are constantly being interrupted. It’s really weird.

That is a fascinating observation Pete. Now that you mention it, I believe I’ve heard of scientific studies that have shown women speak faster than men, though I don’t quite have the motivation to look them up on Google or anything at the moment. That would at least partially explain why women in general are so irritating to listen to. The fact that they can go on and on and on for hours without saying anything of substance explains the rest.

As far as why they do it, I mean who the f~~~ knows why women think and behave the way they do? It makes no sense and cannot be understood rationally. However, your theory sounds dead on to me. If I had to guess, I’d go with that.

It’s because they are talking AT you rather than TO you. On radio that makes sense of course but in person it is no different. I have known women who speak so fast and so continuously that even if I wanted to comment on what they were saying I found by the time they stopped my comments were all racked up and it would be like a film review if I started to say what I wanted to say.

But that is point 2, they don’t want you to speak, unless they have nothing to say which is rare.

I’m surprised you haven’t noticed this before Pete. Women do this all the time to disguise the fact they don’t know what they’re talking about.

When we hear someone talk fast we assume it’s because they have a lot of knowledge they want to share. This makes them appear more credible and therefore more persuasive.

When psychologists first began examining the effect of speech rate on persuasion, they thought the answer was cut-and-dried. In 1976 Norman Miller and colleagues tried to convince participants that caffeine was bad for them (Miller et al., 1976). The results suggested people were most persuaded when the message was delivered at a fully-caffeinated 195 words per minute rather than at a decaffeinated 102 words per minute.

It’s also a convenient way to disguise logical fallacies or present contested opinions. They’re literally not giving you time to come up with a counter argument to each of their points.

Slow speech works best when preaching to the converted. It gives the audience time to agree with each of your points.

I have noticed that in radio a long time ago. And that’s why I love old radio shows like Dick Clark, Casey Kasem, Wolfman Jack, Steve Goddard, Bill St. James, Real Don Steele…

And I loved Paul Harvey during my youth. All old radio giants made me love radio bus since the speed talking and yelling for attention on the air became fashionable in the mid-1990’s I began to despise popular radio.

Radio has become a cultureless background “doodling media” without any worth and DJ’s speed talk to grab attention “over” the office noise-floor in any workplace.

Noise from people’s bulls~~~ radios is one of the most annoying thing in workplaces.

Since then, I began to love automated radio stations.

Same goes for TV.

Only a few good media outlets survived and they are mostly funded by the state.
