How did you keep it together when the dollar signs started piling up?

I wasn’t married but am in the middle of a custody battle right now. I have a decent income but not enough to readily afford all this s~~~.

I’ve only made one appearance in court and my attorney has already worked through my retainer and added quite a bit to my bill already.

I petitioned for primary custody initially and c~~~ face responded in kind by petitioning for support money to spite me. I have a solid case at least for a serious increase in time but I believe cupcake is going to drag it all the way to the end. Even if I can get my support payments reduced considering how much time I’ll be awarded, I’m pretty sure she’ll be able to get a temporary order for the full amount until the custody dispute is resolved. The full amount awarded in my state is 25% gross income.

On top of that I claimed the child in question as an exemption from taxes all last year and cupcake decided to claim our daughter in her tax return before I filed. Even though I had her a reduced amount of time after c~~~ left, cupcake and child were my total dependents for the first 4 months of the year which made our division of the time with the child about 50/50 through the course of the year and I earn more which should’ve allowed me to claim. Now I owe a fair amount of taxes to be paid back to the IRS because cupcake prevented me from claiming our daughter.

All this s~~~ is piling up and I feel like I’m not going to be able to afford my own household anymore.

This body holding me is a reminder of my own mortality. Embrace this moment. Remember, we are eternal and all this pain is an illusion.

    well,
i had to take cash advances on two credit cards.
pay the lawyer and cover household costs.
i began to try and save money with food costs.
    i hate to say it,
but walmart has whole wheat pasta for 1 dollar a box.
    that and eggs.
so i stopped going out to eat,
    brought food to work,
    spent almost nothing.
got a third credit card and transfered balances to avoid interest.
i also sold all the gold and silver jewlery from my grandparents,
sold my bicycle and sports equipment on craigslist.
    sold everything i could .
    .
let time pass and it gets much better.
    ..regarding the taxes owed,
not sure if you can make a deal with the irs to have a payment plan..
    also,
ask your lawyer about that one.
    ..i hope that helped.
i might have misunderstood what you were looking for..

that was definitely helpful sir. i’ve never had a credit card before but now might be the time i suppose if all else fails.

i liked all of your suggestions but besides that, hearing your words of encouragement:

let time pass and it gets much better.

was also a lot of what i needed. i know i can hang in there and make it through but i’ve been having a little bit of a mental crisis about it the last couple days. it certainly helps to have reassurance. thanks

Drive a beater. Anything road legal will do. Get insurance rates down as far as possible.

Eat cheap. Rice, potatoes, hot dogs and baloney. Buy stale bread. Only f~~~~~s need fresh bread.

Reduce things like heat, water and gasoline usage. Wear a sweater in the house. Bathing and shaving once a month is more than enough.

If things get really tough consider selling your blood or an organ. Just ask yourself, “Do you really need both lungs”???

    no problem brother.
have as much time as possible with your kid.
    even when it’s not convenient.
and be as civil as possible with the ex.
    it pays off.
i swear to god it works.
..you will get 50/50 parenting rights,
pay little or no child support,
and THEN you can get ahead financially.
    ..tough it out for now,
your creating a future worth living in !!!

If she’s going after assets, quietly remind her that not only is she paying her lawyer’s fees, but that settlement percentage of your lawyer’s fees, too.

How come no one ever talks about feigning your own death to get out of these types of situations? All you really need is an escape route out of the country and a corpse burnt beyond recognition.

    Easy-peasy…

Some dna/dental records will reveal the body isn’t you.

Are you going for 50/50 custody?

Throw her a bone but done concede anything. What I’m saying is make her a gracious (but smart) offer to induce her to settle and reduce attorney fees. It will also create some good will (hopefully) or at least give the impression you are trying to act in good faith. You need a clear strategy.

The attorney fees can be a huge f~~~ing deal. Get a handle on these by being smart with your negotiations. See if your attorney will work with you as a consultant instead of full on attorney. It can save you a ton of $. I did this in my divorce. It worked really well for me.

As far as the IRS, negotiate as best you can. Act in good faith always but don’t cut your own throat.

I worked in a field for over 10 years where I was constantly negotiating legal claims. I am not an attorney but have extensive experience in dealing with them.

PM me if you would like to discuss options/strategies etc.

    BIB

"Women are directly adapted to act as the nurses and educators of our early childhood, for the simple reason that they themselves are childish, foolish, and short-sighted—in a word, are big children all their lives, something intermediate between the child and the man, who is a man in the strict sense of the word. Consider how a young girl will toy day after day with a child, dance with it and sing to it; and then consider what a man, with the very best intentions in the world, could do in her place.” Quote from Arthur Shopenhauer, 17th century philosopher

    kill her,
    with kindness.
    just be civil as possible.
    wait and see ..
she’ll eventually be unable to vilify you.
    .
like beating on non violent protesters,
    you win by NOT fighting.

    think about it..

    This.

Give her all the furniture and s~~~ she wants. You don’t want that s~~~ anyway, trust me. You are not going to want to have china cabinets and dressers around that reminds you of her and the marriage. Unless you want to be one of those guys whose house is like a museum to their past.
Don’t let her know you don’t want it. Act like you are being thoughtful and want her to have it.
The more you fight (and sometimes you do have to fight) unnecessarily the more expensive it ends up. You don’t want hollow victories about possessions to end up like ashes in your mouth. You want to focus on custody.
