Some people call them murder-cycles, donor-cycles, and all kinds of nasty things!
Some assholes will muscle you around as if you’re protected by a cage like they are, my father (in his day) was intentionally ran off the highway for ha ha sake by a perfect stranger that looked him in the eye while laughing! He was lucky the median on the Garden State is so flat and grassy, in Vermont it would be a death sentence.

My uncle’s best friend was crushed by a truck at walking speed when he turned without really looking, he wasn’t even on a ride, he did some tune up work and feeling out his chain tension. Not paying attention, probably looking at his chain instead.

I was chased by a car full of men that arrogantly brushed me causing me a little rim scuff on the curb that damn near could have killed me! I picked up a rock (knowing the streets) I headed him off and smashed his windshield! Needless to say ole MG-Tower was being chased down by a car full of dudes with a broken windshield. I pulled into a perfect stranger’s back yard and 5 seconds latter the car went roaring by to the next T intersection and turned around knowing I vanished somewhere on that street, I’m lucky they didn’t find me but I could hear them saying that I must be on this street or the next one over, they circled the area for a good 10 minutes then left.

Enough of being wordy, filtering fast is deadly and risky, even at walking speed. Look in 10 degree intervals and lock your eyes still so you burn a good image and see that retread tire skin coming at you from the other lane.
It’s not just riding, it’s all about staying alive and uninjured! You need a heighten sense of awareness otherwise you die.

Watch every motorcycle crash video to see what not to do! Add optional lighting and or reflective tape and a reflective road worker vest for night time riding.

Enjoy cycling Keymaster, just learn the tricks to staying alive and uninjured!

The last thing you want is a motorcycle war story!

    Be safe KM, PAIN SUCKS!

organs are harvested from the victims in motorcycle accidents.

The worst mistake I made was pushing the envelope in twisting winding pitching corners and just before or as I was about to initiate a hard turn a strong 40mph gust of wind delayed the lean, it was a choice of going into a hard lean and f~~~ any head on traffic(wooded blind corner), or try to brake as much as possible and skip off the guardrail! both plans had their extreme pros and extreme cons, I chose double or nothing!

That was the last time I went to that road casino pulling corner levers!

Two wheels are death machines. I’m only alive today because a trench in the blind part of a curve in the road sent me off of a mountain bike into the side of a mountain instead of over the mountain. I only broke my wrist.

Another time some jack asses in a dump truck ran me off the road on purpose driving on the shoulder to do it. I bunny hopped the bike into a ditch with a 4 foot drop and flipped them a bird and kept on trucking.

Situational awareness goes 100 fold whenever on two wheels.

On two wheels you’re committed to your line, you can’t just “jerk the wheel” for an “instant” change in course, the “line” has to be tightened or loosened inside the constraints of balance, when bikes start drifting all you can do is limit the drift and hope your line isn’t spelled out in the trees!

Walking across the street can kill ya too,so just remember it’s the idiots around you that will be the most danger.

Make sure your pipes are good and loud so they hear you coming a mile away, even over their f~~~ing music!

You can’t be too heavy on the front brakes either at least on a mountain bike. I imagine the same thing applies to motorcycles. I learned brake modulation to a fine art during those years.

That trench disrupted my line to say the least.

Hey Tower thanks for thinking of me, man.
Did you remember that I said I’m taking a motorcycle course today?

    I’m blown away.

I should tell you I grew up on bikes (not motorized ones) and rode the length of Germany twice when I often visited an uncle / aunt / cousins there. A regular Forest Gump on wheels. But the first time I was on a motorbike was about 3 years ago when a good friend bought an electric ZERO. He took himself to a deserted parking lot to train himself after getting his license, and I joined him.

Then he convinced me to try it. I said “NO WAY” for the same reason that I would’t let anyone drive MY new motorbike ( or car ) if I just got one. I rejected his offer at least 5 times , but he pushed. And I so I said OK.

He had set up a obstacle course for himself and I nailed it at slow speed .
It was just like…. well…. “riding a bike”.

Then I opened it up JUST a bit and made the big mistake they tell you not to make:
Only look where you want to go. If you look at anything else, you’re going to drive into that.

    And that’s what happened.

I dont know why I accelerated (instead of slowing down) and drove myself into a pole / fence. SLAMMING into it and sending my chest against it ….. like the Stormtrooper hitting a tree in ReturnOfTheJedi. *THUD*.

I was fine after a few days. Bruised ribs. Expensive lesson. $1800 damage to his brand new bike too. I made sure he got it back with not a SINGLE scratch. Not only did I hurt myself. I also hurt my friend’s new bike. And I knew better than to get on the f~~~ing thing in the first place.

( I think that was the last time I ever listened to anyone else’s recommendation. )

We don’t speak about that incident anymore.
    It never happened.

In any case, I’m taking a proper course today and this coming weekend, and just got my license. I’m not much of a risk taker or dare devil , and that’s why I waited so long to do it. But I’m doing it, because it’s one of those things I always wanted to do.

Thanks for the post and your thoughts.

And PS. I lost two good friends on bikes long before their time ( + one actually WAS a suicide )…. and so while I may be dumb, I’m not stupid. Cheers, friend.

I’m with key on this one, I finally brought me one and stop listening to all the organ donor stuff because i realized I can die also in a car crash or walking down the street. Unfortunately life is filled with dangerous hobbies, but does that mean a man passionate about said shouldnt do it because it’s dangerous? A race car driver just died at 27 with safety equipment galore, should he not have ever raced? Should you stop hunting(dick Cheaney). Just live your life but be safe and smart and don’t disrespect the danger.

Never lose sight of what brought you here.

I’ll end up getting one in the future and taking a driving course. I assume riding a motorcycle/moped is the same as riding a bike, minus the pedals + a motor. Or at the very least, you have to be aware of traffic in the same way you do on one of them.

Just dont do risky s~~~ like cutting blind corners like this guy and most likely you’ll be fine.

In 2014 There were 82 million motorcyclists on the road and about 5000 died. 92k were injured which is probably worst.

Youre gunna die one day and a Prius owner is gunna die one day. The only difference is you got to enjoy some good rides.

    Have fun KM!

    Agreed, they are donor-cycles.

I frequently deal with the carnage after accidents – it’s never pretty. I just can’t bring myself to riding one after I’ve seen what happens when things go wrong, like re-marriage. ?. Plus I know my limits, I’m not exactly the most coordinated individual, and would end up on the ground within minutes.

But I totally understand the attraction. There are many risky hobbies and I dabble in a few myself. Cave diving, one of my hobbies, has a higher per capita fatality rate – but it was something I always wandered to do.

LAMMING into it and sending my chest against it ….. like the Stormtrooper hitting a tree in ReturnOfTheJedi. *THUD*.

I know how that feels, I slammed a tree at Jay when a snow snake removed my right ski, thinking I only hit a rock and the ski was still attached, I pressed down on that side but my foot kept on sinking and the turn never happened, same *THUD* but with the clacking of the other ski being torn off on the tree sacrificing it so my torso and especially my head didn’t stop dead against the tree! I skipped off it with a glancing blow, I thought it broke my ribs but they were only bruised and purple.

Don’t get wrong, I’m all for riding, just remember you’re totally invisible to distracted drivers putting on their makeup and texting Chad!

Get something with enough power, lack of power can get you killed just as easy! Nothing worse than pushing against the handlebars trying to get through a hole that’s closing!

Personally? I started on dirt bikes and still like them for their ability to run over just about anything and not throw you down; curbs, RR tracks, road craters, cats, grooved pavement, and that’s only on the road!

Good luck KM, the only thing closer to flying is a wing suit! You’re gonna love it!

Beginners tip kM. The reason you accelerated instead of slowing down? When spooked (be ready for the first time you spooked. Its when allot of guys park it ) you lean back in a defensive mode. You inavertanly open the throttle at the same time! PRATICE. Sitting on the bike, and make a defensive move leaning back and symotainiously CLOSE THE THROTTLE. PRACTICE this till it is automatic. Safe ridding my Biker Brother!!

I learned to ride in the mountains of California. Then, started racing on the track. I’ve had a number of “events” over the years with other people, several crashes, and many close calls. One buddy died pulling a wheelie and hit a light pole. That was 20 years ago. Another guy following me with less skill hit the side of the mountain in a turn and totaled his bike. He wasn’t hurt. To be honest, I don’t know how I made it this far considering how fast I used to ride those mountain roads. Young and dumb I guess.

Now, I switched over to a Harley. I ride aggressive but at the same time constantly checking around me and take defensive maneuvers so that cars see me. Going through intersections is sometimes a gamble. When you ride, you have to know to be alert at ALL times. Always anticipate that someone who is stopped in the opposite direction may turn left in front of you or the guy getting out of the parking lot doesn’t see you. I won’t give up riding. It gives me the rush that I need at times.

    God bless peace and freedom.

Thanks, my friend. (first class is later this afternoon)

When the incident happened and I described it to the repair guys, I felt like a complete moron telling him that I accelerated instead of breaking …. and he just smiled, shook his head, put his hand on my shoulder and said “Man we have ALL done it. Welcome to the club.”

(Sigh.) I miss my bike riding days. But I don’t miss them enough to risk my miserable hide on one ever again — not for any reason.
