This reminds me of the time I was in the North End of Springfield, stopped in traffic towing a car, some Puerto Rican was slapping the s~~~ out of a woman in front of a crowded ice cream shoppe, being a gringo in a neighborhood like that can get you killed!

Just down the street was Victorian tenement buildings where in the courtyards they abandoned the stolen cars, the police and the wrecker operators called it a lights out zone,(no bubble gum machines yellow or blue were left flashing). Flashing lights could get you a brick from high above dropped on your head. Like that dragon movie, “keep one eye on the sky”.

Anyway, back to the icecream shoppe, I looked around at all the other Puerto Ricans and ALL of them were minding their own business, except for the occasional glance, and looking around at things like the gringo in the wrecker, gringo did the exact same thing, made no eye contact with the dude slapping the woman, he was irate about something, eventually some senoritas came to her aid and it was over, the dude walked away.

IMO, there is a bit of difference between a guy like this and your typical white knight. I don’t like lumping them together.

I do think it’s honorable to help out others when you can AND when you understand the situation you’re getting involved with and your capability to handle it. I would guess that this guy really didn’t know the details of the argument. If he knew that a gun was involved, it looks like he did not know how to handle such a situation and was stupid for thinking he could. Without knowing the details, he may have escalated the situation and got the wife killed as well as himself.

I don’t see it as much different then giving money to the poor. It sounds great on the surface, but if you don’t know that the money is actually helping the poor get out of their situation, and not funding their next six pack, you are just making it worse.

Ok, I take back my original statement. It is pretty much white knighting, if you define white knighting as attempting to do the right thing when you clearly have no idea what the right thing is.

Is it still white knighting if you are defending a child? I will usually mouth off to people that treat their kids like s~~~. I was in line at the grocery store and this vile fat c~~~ was in front of me with a couple kids. She was being so incredibly nasty to these children. I couldn’t believe she was talking to them the way she was. I told her she was a worthless POS, and that I hoped the kids would be taken away. She went off on me and I went off right back. This time commenting on her extra fat and how bad she smelled. I thought she was going to have a stroke right there.

This is why it’s worth spending more money to live in a better area. This type of stuff is way more common in lower class areas.

Doesn’t sound like you did a thing for the children, to be honest. I can’t say I’ve done anything other then give dirty looks, but I’ve often thought about kindly offering to speak to a misbehaving child on mom’s behalf. It wouldn’t work though as I’m sure I can get the kid to behave, but mom will surely turn on me, make me the bad man, and go right back to crappy parenting. What’s the point?

Where I live has multi-million dollar historical homes one street over from crack town. That’s just the way it is so no escaping it.

White knighting is a dangerous business. It’s not like you’re even going to get rewarded for it. Men and women caught in DV situations are very, very likely to return to their abusers. The shrinks call it trauma bonding.

Just walk away or call the professionals. Law enforcement hates dealing with DV situations. I can’t blame them.

@RPB: No, I do not consider defending children to be White Knighting. Since you’re a former Army chopper guy, I guarantee you’ve either been stationed where I live or visited. I got to watch two Apaches flying abreast just above the tree line as I drove out to a job this morning. Glad they’re on my side.

Reminds me of the area I live in. It’s a great area because it’s next to everything in town, but if it weren’t for the police showing up pretty much every day, this place would be another ghetto area.

I constantly see couples arguing and fighting to where it could break out in violence (I’ve never seen the violence myself) but A LOT of couples in my area fight to the point to where they slam doors/break things/throw drinks on their spouses.

I’m hear the fighting constantly, to the point to where I just don’t even pay attention to it anymore.

This is one reason why I’d rather buy a large amount of land (100 acres or more) back in the woods somewhere. There’s just too many crazy people in the city. I’d rather deal with bears/other wildlife than crazy f~~~s.

White knighting will get you killed, especially in the city. Or it may even land you with false accusations to where you get locked up.

Sticking to yourself is the best way to stay safe and away from trouble.

I listen to it, internalize it, listen a long time.
To remember my parents arguing heatedly.
To remember the two BENIGN arguments I had with my EX who rationalized in her hamster wheel that she without guilt, could tell others, “There has been abuse.” When all those others [her knowing this full damn well] assumed I’d punched her or hit her. I never laid a hand on her. Once a c~~~ lies like this it’s like cutting open a pillowcase of feathers and strewing them about the room.

Also, I listen so I can defend THE GUY if the usual bulls~~~ of men guilty and women innocent Til proven otherwise. Hell, I’ll even phone it in to make sure that it’s reported accurately in that regard. Haven’t had the chance to do so, but I will.

When these mangina’s decide to do something stupid like this, how many of them have a girlfriend or wife prodding them by saying, “Honey look! Go do something” I wonder how many men who would otherwise not get involved get volunteered by some c~~~ to do so.
