Along the lines of “what is fair is fair” and speaking against the manipulation and hypnosis general public is subjected to, I bring forward some evidence that Yelp is extortion machine scamming small business owners.

The gist is Yelp uses an algorithm to filter reviews (they call them not recommended reviews) based on whether the business is paying them a monthly fees to promote their business. If the business owner declines to pay, their ‘algorithm’ will hide all the 5-star ratings and only show 1, 2 or 3 star ratings. Thereby hurting the business. Now if an owner pays the opposite happens. Thereby promoting their business. Some business owners are forced to pay out of fear because of Yelp’s algorithms.

It sounds to me a very extortion scheme is in place. Have a look:

I did my own small experiment by visiting a few random 2 or 3 star places and under their page is the link to “not recommended reviews” and then upon clicking it, an another link appears to show more “not recommended reviews” lo and behold there are all the other 4 or 5 star ratings. So I would guess this business owner declined to be a victim of extortion.

I am not a small business owner but I really don’t appreciate being made a fool of.

    F~~~ Yelp.

That would explain some things I’ve noticed.

When they interviewed the lady that ran the spa, they didn’t discuss the ‘filtered reviews’ in her case.

However, one person saying that a few dollars a day can change their filtering schema leads me to believe that there is a ‘Possibility’ of fraud.

I have no personal experience with Yelp, so I am in no way qualified to respond about their business practices.

It today’s day and age, when small business wants to lash out at corporate (fairly or unfairly) because of a failed business I suggest that remember some past scandals. Everyone wants to have someone to blame. Sometimes it’s the fault someone else. Sometimes not.

The Duke University Lacrosse rape Scandal

That chick dragging a mattress all over the university campus.

    But there was also

    Enron

    Lehman Brothers.
