Oh man, I just got word that a female acquaintance of mine who bought a motorcycle three weeks ago went out and wrecked it today.

She’s never had a bike in her life but last year she dated a biker guy (BMW touring style, if you can call that “biker”) and of course she got into it. Chameleon effect is in effect.

So after they broke up, she decided she wanted to get a bike of her own and spent about $2500 on a Honda harley copy which she was keeping in the garage at her ex-boyfriend’s house. I suspect this was part of his plan to get her back or something.

Anyway, I ride a Harley and so the other day she hits me up “hey, let’s go for a ride” and I’m all “sure, if you’re up for it” and she said she wanted to ride down to Hoover Dam. I was all “That’s a pretty long ride on the highway in windy conditions… maybe you want to get in a bit more practice before taking that on.”

As for me, I bought my bike a year ago and took an advanced rider course (I rode for six years back when I was in university the second time) to refresh my memory. Then I slowly worked my way from riding around the neighborhood during the day to riding longer distances and in the evenings and under less than ideal conditions… you know, so that I wouldn’t kill myself.

She was smart enough to agree to postpone the long ride but then wanted to do a shorter one… then canceled on that one so she could get in some more practice in her neighborhood… then went out today and crashed herself into a median strip, wrecking the bike and possibly breaking her hand.

Ladies, if you’re lurking here, the moral of this story is – Just because your boyfriend was into something doesn’t mean you know s~~~ about it. A man isn’t capable of riding a motorcycle, lifting weights, playing hockey or sky diving just because he’s a man, he’s capable because he puts in the time and effort to understand what’s going on and work his way up from noob to skilled and experienced… something you probably don’t care enough and wouldn’t have the patience to do.

Plus if you’re a single mother with a 16 year old daughter, the last thing you have any right to be doing is taking risks with your own life. Your life belongs to your kids until they are at least 18, not to you.

    hat’s off to you doc..
    i rode mini-bikes
    dirt bikes
    motorcycles
    all take time to learn.
now days i call them “donor-cycles”..
due to the high number of organs harvested from the deceased killed while riding..
she’s lucky she only broke her hand and not her neck…

Doc I’m about to get a bike as well as take the safety course for the first time ever (part of going my own way). In your opinion would you not recommend going on long rides (1hour 1way) as a beginner? Also im getting a cruiser style bike (Yamaha Stryker) with a pretty big engine, 1300 I believe ,and wont go crazy just for cruising, what do you think of that setup? I just dont want to invest in a smaller bike just to have to trade up or sale to get the ideal bike I want,do you think that size bike is a good idea for a beginner? Thanks

Never lose sight of what brought you here.

It’s a little bit like putting a cyclist into a f1 car. She is pretty lucky that this didn’t end her life.

I would not recommend it at all. Of course I can’t know the details of your situation, but I would highly recommend taking brief rides near your home at first and get used to riding on different road types, in different weather conditions, with differing levels of traffic and so forth and working your way up to longer rides.

Believe me, a ride feels a LOT longer when you’re sitting on a motorcycle than it does when you’re in a car.

The Stryker has a 4 gallon tank with a range of about 160 miles which is fine for regional cruising but of course I wouldn’t take a bike like this on a long haul, multi-day ride unless you’ve mapped out gas stations and bring your own tools, etc.

I keep debating on getting a motorcycle, but every day at least 4 times a day I see dumb f~~~ing drivers and reason not to go out and do it. You could be a great motorcyclist, do everything right, and some dumb f~~~ will run you over because they were texting and driving.

Amen to this. I had a female friend who one day announced she knew more about politics than me. I am no expert, but I was quite savvy back at that time (listened to a lot of the parliamentary news network then) and laughed at her. Her reasoning? Her boyfriend (who basically used her as an extended pump and dump) used to watch the news after he shagged her and yell his opinion at the TV. So now she was an expert. <sigh>

When I did my rider training about 3 years back, they told us of the shortest motorcyclist on record. A woman in one of Sydney’s seaside suburbs bought herself a brand new bike, pulled out from the kerb in front of a truck, and that was all she wrote. 10 second life expectancy.

A lot of us are probably alive because they told us those easy-to-remember stories.

There’s an old saying. You should only ride a bike because you absolutely have to.If you dont get what that means, you got no business being on a bike. People want to do it to be cool. Its ridiculously dangerous. Its also more difficult than you think.
