MS is using the rolling release idea in their os, Similar to Gentoo and Slackware model of updating. Basically when you install the OS, that’s it. That OS doesn’t have a expiration date at all as long as you update your system at least once a month or so. But the downside is that If you don’t read up on what you are doing when updating, you can easily break your os since there are core changes that take place in the os that normally wouldn’t be a issue If you have a point to point release version of a OS. The new changes are already in the new version.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_releaseThere is nothing wrong with updating a OS. however that is different with a non free os where you have little control over it in the first place, which is why the OS happens to break when you update. It’s made to break when you add in changes.
“Don’t fix what’s not broken” – is one of the biggest wisdom revelations I had in my life.
Once everything works fine – don’t update – make backups instead. If all your periphery works fine – f~~~ it – you can live with working XP or 7 forever. Updating is idiocy like antivirus
I know it’s a very radical idea, but I thought I would voice it. It makes a whole lotta sense if you think about itYou may be able to get away with that with a OS, but not a web browser. You do need patches for a web browser every now and again even If you are careful.
Just read carefully on what updates you are applying, when I had windows 7. I set that box up to only notify me for security updates only, nothing more, nothing less. Unfortunately due to the nature of MS OS “insecurity model” that set up still got screwed over because ms wanted to download a large update on my machine for windows 10 in case If I want it.
Edit: I forgot that that last piece of advice isn’t all that good since this is Windows 10 we are talking about. Only update your programs and tools that need a online connection, but not the OS in this case.

My laptop and Surface Pro took 1607 with no problems. I don’t mind restarting, but it must be at a place and time of MY choosing. I’m hoping I’ve set group policy properly, or Microsoft does not change anything again.
I’m getting ready to upgrade to Server 2016. I want to play with the Nano Server. In my research for this upgrade, Microsoft is catching hell over their overly aggressive automatic restart policy. I do see where most users are literally too busy to restart as everyone is doing the work of two. I’ve had execs admit this to me. They don’t like it as they know it hurts productivity and moral, but the US Government has forced their hand with the record amount of inane regulations over the past eight years.
Server 2016 plays it much more conservatively than Windows 10.
I’m seriously thinking about moving to Linux for my personal needs though I’ll never be free of Windows 10.
There are three ways you can go about this.
1) Have two computers. One for business, and one for personal use. Don’t use the business computer for anything that has personal data If you are concerned with MS spying. and use the personal computer with linux for your downtime.
2) Set up a Vmware or Vbox setup on linux so that you can boot into windows in a sandbox environment.
3) Or duel boot the two os If you can. This can be tricky to set up though. This is what I did before ditching Windows 7 and all of MS stuff for good.

Operating systems market desperately needs competition, Microsoft is just getting worse and worst with every new iteration, no privacy, no control over updates, security issues, etc. I am also very wary of going on Win10. Also i have zero trust in their business ethics. They have way too much power not due to financial statements or market cap but by owning linkedin and leading operating system with serious privacy and security concerns i really see the need for alternatives.
Well. It used to be that 15 years ago there were quite a few different operating systems in wide use -mainly of proprietary UNIX variants and a few exotic systems. But bad management by the owners of those products and Microsoft anti competitive tactics have resulted in the demise of almost every single system that is not Windows, Linux, or OSX.
These days vendors only want to support Windows mainly and that lack of support is why you don’t see unique and successful alternative operating systems aside from the galaxy of boring Linux clones. An example of this is SkyOS which was a completely original desktop OS that died due to lack of support.
I do wish that the computing ecosystem was as diverse as it once was. But I think that is gone for good. Computing has largely stagnated in recent years and there just aren’t that many groundbreaking technological advances anymore.
We can only hope Microsoft screws up Windows so badly that someone else takes advantage of the opportunity to produce a completely new and professional quality operating system.
If things get too dire, it might just be necessary to go “back in time” to older computers that aren’t pieces of crap.

The Surface is my personal only PC. I install nothing on it.
The laptop is for business, but I pretty much follow the same protocol except for stuff like Wireshark, PuTTy, etc…
The desktop is a swirling mess of development tools, Turbo Tax, and other junk. I’ve beaten it like a red headed step child over the years. It runs amazingly well though. The problem with these rolling updates is that they tend to break s~~~. Scientific and process control software is notorious for this. Something that is totally not acceptable.
I hate to say it, but Windows has a death grip on the enterprise market. I wish there were some real competition. Personally, I believe MS is breaking things on purpose to force upgrades to the latest Server 2016/Windows 10 products.
Two weeks ago, I had a coworker start a presentation, only to have windows 10 demand to install updates now with no option for later.
She was smart enough to keep a spare copy of the presentation on a flash drive and borrowed my laptop to give it. Afterwards she was fuming because her laptop was still useless for another half hour, forcing her to take notes by hand.
This is not the first time I have seen work interrupted for a forced Windows 10 update and she no longer thinks I am crazy for paying someone to install and teach me how to use Linux instead.
When I am working and getting a good head of steam going I don’t want to be forced to stop or worry about losing work.

Anonymous11I think they’ve recently sabotaged Chrome too. I’ve seen a number of Win10 machines including my personal brand new Win 10 PC with zombie Chrome processes out the wazoo, or it could be a Chrome memory leak. I rebooted and opened Chrome this morning only to be nagged about using Edge when I clicked on the icon.
Those forced reboots caused me to lose a number of spreadsheets that I was working with last year for my income taxes. I went to bed and blammo all of my spreadsheets were gone overnight. I now save like a crackhead looking out the curtains every 5 minutes as I’m doing the exact same thing right now.
I warn everyone I know to reboot their PC hours before going to make any presentations. The latest build I’m on has a slightly more graceful forced reboot mechanism though one has to go menu diving to configure it.
As much as I hate to say it, things like Libre Office and the various non-Adobe Acrobat programs do work for simple cases, but both companies always have some must have feature. At least Microsoft gives a decent deal on Office by subscription. Adobe breaks it off in your ass.
Anonymous42I’m getting a MAC this time, Microsoft has ruined the experience for me, I’m the last person they’re thinking of when they come out with more of their aggravating s~~~! I would get married if I wanted to spend my life enduring s~~~ test after s~~~ test. I ran XP long past extinction and returned a brand new computer with WIN 8.
Muckrosoft is like that c~~~ you just can’t wait to get rid of!Hey Microsoft, F~~~ off and die! You’re all through!
I think they’ve recently sabotaged Chrome too.
I stopped using Chrome and switched to Opera on my PC a few months ago and once I got used to some of the differences, I had far less problems with Opera than I did with Chrome.

I notice as well, that Chrome seems to be performing pretty poorly lately. Runs like crap. It just goes back to the fact that internet is becoming more and more bloated. It’s getting to the point where you almost can’t use the internet on systems older than 10 years, because of all the useless crap it now has.

I think I’m about done with them too. If they don’t put it back to Windows 7, or earlier then they can’t forget me using their operating system in the future. I don’t want a gay, fisher price operating system that I can’t control.
Been preparing for the post Microsoft age for nearly 10 years now, so I’ll be more than ready.
The forced update bulls~~~ is why i am keeping to windows 7 ultimate for as long as possible which should be possibly even a decade in the future because there are ways to get old windows and make them compatable with new programs.
Until windows 11 fixes the bulls~~~ of windows 10 i ain’t upgrading.
Just an east coast asshole who likes to curse, If you get offended by words like fuck, cunt, shit, piss, bitch or any racial slurs then you just scroll down.
Anonymous11@cataphract: I run Opera too and have for many years even paid to have it ad free many moons ago.
