Getting married is not in any way in a man’s favor. The right tactic in this case would be to tell her to get out permanently when she proposed a year off. “Just take the rest of your life off honey.”

It would have been the right tactic even if you wanted to keep her. Call her bluff. Always negotiate as if you don’t care. Be a MAN. You can’t lose if you don’t care and can walk away.
