Why MOST Doctors Would Rather DIE (Complete article)

Why MOST doctors like me would rather DIE than endure the pain of treatment we inflict on others for terminal diseases: Insider smashes medicine’s big taboo

Should I discover tomorrow that I have advanced, life-threatening cancer, I won’t go rushing to the doctors for a heavily invasive course of medical treatment. No, I will shut up my London surgery, head to my home in Norfolk, stock up on gin and tonic and have a jolly good time until I meet my end.

Like most doctors, I understand that much of the care we offer patients who have serious, life-threatening illnesses is ultimately futile.

Worse, it can involve many months of grueling treatments that might possibly extend the length of one’s life, but do nothing for its quality.

Punishing ordeal: Cancer patients often endure painful treatments just to extend their lives for just a couple of months – Dr Scurr believes they would be better off enjoying the time they have left.

But while we give that care to patients, the vast majority of doctors I know would not want this for themselves. Yet this fact has long been taboo in the medical world. The silence has been shattered by Ken Murray, professor of family medicine at the University of Southern California.

He hit the headlines worldwide last month after publishing an essay in the online magazine Zocalo Public Square, which argues that most practicing doctors would not put themselves through ‘life-saving’ interventions that are big on promises, but small on success, and involve great pain and distress.

The doctors won’t tell this to their patients, though. Instead, they encourage them to take the treatments.

Why is this so? Years of practicing medicine make doctors realistic about their chances, and they know that having illnesses such as advanced pancreatic cancer means there’s only a tiny chance of survival.

But most people — patients and their relatives — have hugely unrealistic expectations about what modern medicine can do to help those with life-threatening illnesses.

With pancreatic cancer, for example, which is often diagnosed late, the average length of time between diagnosis and death is usually less than six months.

If I had the disease, I would not attempt any of the treatments for it, such as chemotherapy, because it can be gruelling and misery-making, and the success rate is extremely low. I would rather have painkilling palliative care, which can do great things in helping to make you feel comfortable while you are dying.

I feel like the article is just an attempt to convince people who have cancer to not waste medical resources and time. I know many medical personal, and I have can tell you that this is not their mentality. This article is also incorrect on several medical facts, but it serves to the possible attempt of saying just die if you have cancer.

However, if you have cancer, and initial treatments fail, many would rather depart than to suffer the more invasive and experimental treatments. This is mainly due to fear and lack of knowledge.

I wonder if this article is in response to the medical programs mentioning that they are running into financial problems, not being able to treat everyone’s illnesses.

When my mother was dying of cancer she told me to never support the American Cancer Society. It should be called the American Chemotherapy Society. My mother was given something called Platinum treatments. They killed her. If I get cancer they;re NOT doing Chemo on me. If they do, it’ll be for free. I’m not paying for it. What are thy going to do? Repossess my health?

There are many different types of cancer. Some respond well to treatment, have high cure rates, others do not.

Also, in the US, if you don’t have insurance, trust me, the doctors and the hospitals don’t push these unnecessary or low success-rate and costly treatments so much.

How can a woman be expected to be happy with a man who insists on treating her as if she were a perfectly normal human being.

As population and debt increase and the resources to provide current levels of care diminish, ordinary people will increasingly be encouraged to f~~~ off and die when they get old or sick.

I'm going my own way. Maybe I'll see you there.

    Life’s a bitch!
S~~~ happens and then you die, so what?
Who wants to live in this s~~~hole forever?

If I had cancer I’d go into the woods and live the rest of my short life like a Man, not like some lab rat.
I wrote that I wanted to die on beach with the sun on my face but a sunny clearing in the middle of the woods would do just as well.
I hate hospitals! I won’t die in a hospital filled with bitches who’d smile at me because it’s their f~~~ing job. F~~~ that!

Don't let them Blame, Shame or Tame you!
Give 'em NOTHING, not even an answer!

Macho this hits home for me!
My Father was diagnosed with lung cancer
at 55years old and lasted less than a year
    after that diagnosis.

Cancer cannot live in an alkali body.
Once diagnosed cancer should be cured
    naturally.

In his spirit!! “looking back I would agree
that the doctors at the VA Hospital treated
me to death and My son had to be my
caregiver and watch. I was approved for
a monthly disability check Three months before
my death I received two checks, but my son
had to reimburse them for one.

My spirit cannot be killed! The afterlife is real.
The quicker a government doctor ends the life of
a beneficiary The fewer benefit checks they have to send out. Incentives are given to treat rather than cure illness.

When I think about it, I am tempted to go visit
the VA hospital in spirit and ask to see my oncologist
to give him a piece of God’s mind. The oath is clear
that doctors take. If you cannot help or improve the person at least do no more harm. Practice should be done only on criminals not innocent people.
Every occupation that practices should not be
a paid occupation. Professionals get paid not
    amateurs just practicing..

We should never pay a practicing lawyer or a practicing
physician only a pro who will take responsibility
    for their actions.

The best legal or medical advice comes from the
    spirit within yourself.

    Love and respect to all

I was bound to be misunderstood, and I laugh at those who misunderstand me. Kind mockery at the well intentioned, but unfettered cruelty towards those would be prison guards of my creative possibilities. This so as to learn as much from misunderstanding as from understanding. Taking pleasure in worthy opponents and making language fluid and flowing like a river yet pointed and precise as a dagger. Contradicts the socialistic purpose of language and makes for a wonderful linguistic dance, A verbal martial art with constant parries that hone the weapon that is the two edged sword of my mouth.

This is a great topic Macho. I’ve thought about this a lot. I often wondered what experienced Dr.s would choose to do if faced with a terminal disease. I’m with Untamed on this one. I’m going to the woods to die. No Chemo or radiation for this guy.

They say that now but if it really happened they would be ensuring they get all the care they need.

There is a push for euthanasia at the moment as well. Soylent Green coming to life.

When a man has lived a full and satisfying life, then he has no fear if death comes in a day or a year…

The only thing I hated about dying is not being able to see the advancements that is going in the future…But if the current SJW s~~~ continues then the world is f~~~ed anyway and I have lived the pinnacle of technological advancement…

An interesting article.. It hits home for me. My son is the only real reason I have to keep living. His mom has a rare cancer and while she seems to be fighting well, there’s always the chance it could come back.

Personally my faith gives me hope.. But I get it. If you knew the treatments likely wouldn’t help and were painful… It’s like prescribing torture in the guise of, “it might work”.

    Deep stuff to ponder over.

I can look at it from two different points. One being my job is the medial field,…the other my parents are that that stage one day soon I am going to get that phone call from one or the other.
I would not want to inflict a big and long drawn out death watch. Old age being the ultimate terminal illness.
My job in nursing is to preserve life. Some areas I can not work, just can not take it. Hospice, burn center, neo natal. I have seen that spark of life leave, have also helped bring it back. Don’t know how many people I have seen pass over the years working. You learn not to dwell on it. If you can’t it will rip you apart quick.
